Abstract

An intruder alarm comprises a radio transmission arrangement including an intruder detector linked by radio with or without repeater units to at least one annunciator located in nearby premises. The annunciator includes a receiver responsive to an encoded radio signal transmitted by the intruder detector to provide an audible and/or visual indication. The annunciator units may be fixed or portable. <IMAGE>

Description

The Radio Linked Intrusion Alarm and Annunciator Apparatus The Invention This relates to set of units which together form an intruder alarm to operate between nearby properties.
There are currently available commercially, intruder alarms which give a visual and/or audible indication of intrusion into premises. This usage, which only gives the alarm indication at the actual premises entered, has an inherent weakness. The warning is non-specific and relies on a third party observing the warning signal and alerting the appropriate authorities, sometimes a long time after the warning has been initiated.
The object of the invention is to combine the use of an intruder alarm and a low power radio transmitter into one integrated unit with a radio receiver and annunciator into another integrated unit. The first (transmitting) unit is set up in the premises to be protected and is used in conjunction with the second (receiving) unit which may be located in a nearby premises. On detecting an intrusion into the protected premises the transmitting unit will transmit an encoded radio signal to be received and decoded by the associated receiving unit(s). On receiving such a signal the receiving unit(s) will announce the intrusion by audible and/or visual indicators.
The units may be fixed or portable and will be ideally suited for use by cooperating neighbours. Each unit will be battery powered, externally powered or externally powered with battery backup.
The transmitting unit will normally be set in one place for a Period of Operation. The exact position will be determined with reference to the specific layout of the premises to be protected. The receiving unit(s) may be moved from place to place during the Period of Operation and will remain active to receive a signal from the transmitting unit provided that they remain within range of the transmitted signal from the transmitting unit.
The range of communication between the transmitting and receiving units may be enhanced by the use of an additional repeater unit. This unit will receive the signal radiated by the transmitting unit and retransmit the information to the associated receiving unit(s).
Figure 1 is an outline sketch of the type of units envisaged, although the actual construction has not yet been finalised and may vary dependant on use. The invention will include a transmitting unit with a means of detecting an intruder and a receiving unit with means of announcing the intrusion. Both units include means of accepting power from an external source. The repeater unit is not shown on the sketch.

Claims (2)

  1. Claims
An intruder detector and separate annunciator linked by radio, with or without the use of repeater units, for use in nearby premises.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1. An intruder detection system, comprising a combined intrusion detector and low power radio transmitter unit and a combined radio receiver and annunciator unit, for use between neighbouring domestic premises.
  2. 2. A system according to claim 1 where the signals are relayed by one or more separate low power radio repeater units.
