Description
AN IMPLEMENT
The invention relates to an implement, particularly a gardening implement such as a rake. Such implements can be difficult to store or transport because they have a head which extends beyond a handle thereof, usually laterally.
It is an object of the invention to seek to obviate this disadvantage.
According to the invention there is provided an implement, comprising a handle and a head which has a stowed position and a working position between which it is moved by an operating mechanism.
Using the invention it is possible to provide that a head of say a rake can be stowed alongside the handle when not in use.
A rake embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The Figure shows a perspective view of the article in an extended or working position.
Referring to the drawing there is shown an implement in the form of a rake 1, comprising a handle 2 and a head 3 which has a stowed position and a working position (shown) between which it is moved by an operating mechanism 4.
The handle 2 is an elongate manually grippable handle and the head 3 is a comb-like member having a cross-piece 5 from which project a plurality of spaced apart teeth 6, in this case twenty one.
The head 4 has two parts 7 and 8 hinged to a central part 9 fixed to the pole by respective hinges 10,11. Each part 7 and 8 supports one end of a respective pivotable stay 12 and 13 which converge to the handle 2 and are connected with the operating mechanism 4 through respective longitudinally extending blind slots 15, which mechanism. comprises the stays 12,13 and an extensible means such as a rod or a piston and cylinder arrangement housed within the handle 2 where at a hand grip end there is an actuating button 16. There is a device on the underside (as viewed) of the handle 2 adjacent the slots 15. The device is a release catch which locks the mechanism 4 in the working position and releases it for movement to the stowed position of the head 3.
The rake 1 is suitably used as a portable bunker rake to be used by golfers so that during a round they can rake the sand in a bunker in which their ball might care to rest. The rake 1 having a stowable head can be readily carried in a golf bag with golf clubs. Normally it would in the stowed position have a hood like the ones which are used to cover golf club heads when not in play.
In use, the rake 1 with its stowed head is removed from a bag, the hood is removed, and the actuating button 16 is actuated by thumb pressure so moving the extensible means towards the head 3. The action is accommodated by the stays or struts 12,13 being pivoted to the working position shown where they have pushed out the hinged parts 7 and 8 simultaneously to form the open head in the working position. The release catch then acts to latch the operating mechanism 4 so that the head 3 is maintained in the working position shown.
The bunker is raked. Then the release catch is released to release the operating mechanism 4 so that it is retracted to hinge the head parts 7 and 8 to lie alongside the handle 2 with the struts or stays 12 and 13 at the sides. The hood is replaced and the rake with the head in the stowed position is replaced in the golf bag.
Claims (11)
1. An implement, comprising a handle and a head which has a stowed position and a working position between which it is moved by an operating mechanism.
2. An implement according to Claim 1, the handle being an elongate manually grippable handle and the head a comb-like member having a cross-piece from which project a plurality of spaced apart teeth.
3. An implement according to Claim 2, the head comprising two parts respectively hinged to a central part secured to the handle.
4. An implement according to Claim 3, the respective parts supporting one end of a respective pivotable stay, the stays converging to the handle from their respective parts and being connected with the operating mechanism.
5. An implement according to Claim 4, there being blind slots in the handle through which the respective stays are connected with the operating mechanism.
6. An implement according to Claim 5, the operating mechanism comprising an extensible means housed in the handle.
7. An implement according to Claim 6, the extensible means comprising a rod and a manually operable device for locking the mechanism in the working position and releasing it for movement to the stowed position.
8. An implement according to Claim 6, the extensible means comprising a piston and cylinder arrangement housed within the handle and an actuating means at or adjacent a hand grip end of the handle.
9. An implement according to Claim 7, the actuating means comprising a manually depressible button.
10. An implement according to Claim 8 or Claim 9, including a manually operable device for locking the mechanism in the working position and releasing it for movement to the stowed position.
11. An implement, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
