Abstract

The gravity level comprises of a rectangular main body 10 with a housing 15 to receive a transparent levelling device 14, half filled with liquid 17, the level of which, when aligned with the markings 12 on the level, central to the housing for a horizontal reading, and at right angles and central to the housing for a vertical reading, will give accurate readings at all times. <IMAGE>

Description

GRAVITY LEVEL This invention relates to a form of levelling device.
Normal levels work on the principle of a trapped bubble encased in a slightly curved glass tube with two marks equal to the length of the bubble across the glass. flhis must be set correctly into the level to give approximate readings. It is also necessary to readjust these ordinary levels, when they receive a sharp knock or blow.
The present invention works on the principle that liquid always finds its own level, either in a continuous, transparent, circular or rectangular tube, or sealed in a transparent container.
The body of the level has horizontal and vertical markings, and when either of the above levelling devices are placed into the corresponding housing in the body of the level, it will automatically give an accurate reading without the necessity of setting or resetting when knocked. Only one levelling device is required for giving both horizontal and vertical readings, or a reading at any other angle.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows a plan and two sectional views of the level.
Figure 2 illustrates in perspective the separation of the levelling device from the stock of the level.
Figure 3 illustrates two types of levelling mechanism which can be used.
Referring to the drawing, the level comprises of a main body 10 which has a housing 15 in which to incorporate the levelling device 14 half filled with a liquid 17 which is held in position by plate 16.
In order for the level to operate accurately the markings 12 on the body shown in Figs 1 & 2 must be exactly parallel and central to the housing for the horizontal reading. Vertical marks must be at right angles to the horizontal marks and also central to the housing. levelling marks can be made at any angle required, in addition to vertical and horizontal.
Levelling devices 14 shown in Fig 3 are of a sealed, transparent material which is exactly half filled with liquid 17.

Claims (4)

1 A gravity level comprising of a main rectangular body of zr,y length housed out to take a levelling device half filled with a liquid. men the level of the liquid is aLigned with markings, horizontal, vertical or at any angle on the body of the level,it will give a required accurate reading.
2 A gravity level as claimed in claim 1 wherein levelling marks of all angles are on the main body.
3 A gravity level as claimed in 1 & 2, housing a transparent levelling device, half filled with liquid which, when used in conjuction with the main body becomes an acaurste gravity level.
4 A gravity level substantially described herein with reference to Figs 1-3 of the accompanying drawing.
