Abstract

A pilot flame burner for igniting gas burners which comprises a generally cylindrical body member 4 including a section 5 of reduced diameter. A cover 1 provided over the body member is formed with a main outlet orifice 2 above a series of side outlet orifices 3. The orifices are supplied with combustible gas/air mixture through an orifice 6 formed in the opposite side of the body section of reduced diameter to the orifices 3. The burner is lit by igniting a small flame at the orifice 13 which lights the mixture at the orifices 3 which in turn ignite gas issuing from the main orifice 2. <IMAGE>

Description

Pilot Flame Burners This invention relates to pilot flame burners for use with gas burners in domestic appliances and more especially to such pilot flame burners with high flame stability for igniting gas burners of domestic appliances supplied with various types of gas supply, these including those derived from fossil fuels e.g. coal, liquids and natural or other gases, the only essential difference to the burner when using different supplies of gas being the choice of jet for the flow of gas.
Burners in accordance with the invention have flames which remain permanently alight in all operating conditions of the burner. Thus, the pilot flame remains alight even when the gas supply is at its lowest pressure this being of the order of, for example, 10 mm water column, or when the gas supply is at its highest pressure, for example, 600 to 700 mm water column. The flame is stable for all types of combustible gas used, and with any practicable pressure variation.
Burners in accordance with the invention include a series of outlet orifices of relatively small crosssection which emerge from one side of a cover of a body member of the burner. These orifices are supplied with a gas/air mixture drawn in at a relatively low pressure from an auxiliary chamber positioned inside the burner through a single orifice from a central section of the body member, the latter acting as a venturi nozzle inside the burner itself.
According to the present invention there is provided a pilot flame burner for igniting gas burners comprising a generally cylindrical body member including a section of reduced diameter over which is provided a cover formed with a main outlet orifice above a series of side outlet orifices, the orifices being supplied with a combustible gas/air mixture through an orifice formed in the body section of reduced diameter.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a burner in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a front view partly in section of the burner illustrated in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side view of a body member of the burner illustrated in Figures 1 and 2; and Figure 4 is a vertical cross section taken through the body member illustrated in Figure 3.
The burner illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a cover 1 having a main outlet orifice 2 positioned above a series of side outlet pilot orifices 3 designed to stablize, in use of the burner, a main flame issuing from the orifice 2. Inside the cover 1 is a cylindrical body member 4 which, as can be seen more clearly from Figures 3 and , has a central section 5 of reduced diameter, formed with a side orifice 6 which, in use of the burner, provides a gas supply at a very low pressure to a chamber defined between the central section 5 and the cover 1 and immediately opposite to the emergence point of the pilot outlet orifices 3.
The body member 4 houses a jet 10 having an orifice 11 for the flow of gas, the diameter of the jet 10 depending on the type of gas employed and the required calorific power of the burner.
The orifices 3 provide a supply of gas to fuel small flames which keep ignited the gas to fuel the main flame emerging from the orifice 2 of the burner, irrespective of the pressure of the combustible gas or its nature.
Primary combustion air is drawn into the body member 4 via slots 7 formed in the lower part of the cylindrical section 5 of the body member 4.
To light the burner, a small flame 13 is lit by electrical charge or other appropriate means. This small flame 13 in turn ignites the gas leaving pilot orifices 3 to provide pilot flames to ignite a flame 14, which is controlled in the same way as 13 of flame 15, which serves to heat a valve thermocouple, thus igniting the gas emitted from outlet 2 to produce the main flame whose task is to ignite the burners of the gas applicance.
Advantages which accrue from burners in accordance with the invention include a very high flame stability irrespective of the type of gas used, and an extremely simple and economical form of construction.

Claims (3)

1. A pilot flame burner for igniting gas burners comprising a generally cylindrical body member including a section of reduced diameter over which is provided a cover formed with a main outlet orifice above a series of side outlet orifices, the orifices being supplied with combustible gas/air mixture through an orifice formed in the body section of reduced diameter.
2. A pilot flame burner as claimed in claim 1, wherein the main flame outlet orifice is supplied from a column of combustible gas/primary combustion air mixture in the body section of reduced diameter and the series of side orifices are supplied from a chamber defined between the cover and the body section of reduced diameter, the combustible mixture being at a lower pressure than that supplying the main flame to ensure high flame stability.
3. A pilot flame substantially as herein described with reference to Figures 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings.
