Abstract

A channel-sectioned coping 10 made from sheet metal has a decorative facing element 12 secured to it. The coping element comprises a top member 13 with front and rear depending members. Support members 11 are secured to the front depending member 14 at spaced intervals and have at their top and bottom edges formations 19, 21 which respectively co-operate with formations 26, 30 on the facing element enabling the facing element to be snap-fitted to the support members. <IMAGE>

Description

COPINGS This invention relates to copings and has a particularly useful but not exclusive application in copings of the kind described in Patents Nos. 1263463 and 1392369.
These copings are very efficient and are relatively inexpensive but since they are usually made from sheet metal e.g. aluminium, the copings cannot readily be shaped to provide a front surface having a required decorative shape and may therefore conflict with other architectural features of a building.
According to this invention there is provided a coping comprising an elongate coping element having a top member and front and rear members depending from opposite edges of the top member, and a facing element mounted on the front depending member, said facing element and the front depending member on which it is mounted having means whereby the facing element is snap fitted in position relative to the front depending member.
In preferred arrangements the coping element is made from sheet metal e.g. aluminium, and has secured to the front depending member thereof one or more support members having formations adapted in conjunction with the facing element to enable the facing element to be snap fitted in position. In one such arrangement support members are mounted on the front depending member at spaced intervals along its length.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing showing in cross-sectional view a coping according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the coping comprises a coping element 10, a support member 11 and a facing element 12. The coping element is conveniently of the type described in Patent Specifications Nos. 1263463 or 1392369 and has a top member 13 which is generally horizontal but slopes rearward at a shallow angle to cause rain-water to run off, a vertical rear member (not shown), and a vertical front member 14 the free edge part 15 of which is turned upwardly and rearwardly.
Support members 11 are secured by bolts or rivets to the front member 14 at intervals along its length. Each support member has a vertical body part 18 with a partcircular channel formation 19 at its upper end, and the lower end part 20 of the member extends rearward and terminates in a tooth 21 having a downwardly inclined front face 22 and a vertical rear face 23.
The facing element 12 has a horizontal top portion 25 formed with a downwardly projecting rib 26 which engages in the channel formations 19 of the support members and has its rear edge 27 turned slightly downward and enveloped by a sealing strip 28 which engages the top surface of the top member 13. The front face of the facing element is intended to be decorative and may be of any desired profile. The lower end portion 29 of the element projects rearwards and terminates in a formation 30 having a chamfered end surface 31 and providing a groove 32 complementary to the tooth 21. An L-shaped flange 33 depends from the lower end portion and may be shaped as desired to accommodate an edge of a soft it or fascia board.
The facing element and the support members are conveniently made by extrusion from aluminium and either or both are resilient. The facing element is positioned by engaging its rib 26 in the channels of the spaced support members 11 and then pressing its lower end portion rearward to cause the chamfered end surface 31 to slide on the sloping front surface 22 of the tooth until the tooth snaps into the groove.
The illustrated construction thus enables copings made from sheet metal to be provided with a decorative front surface relatively inexpensively without adversely affecting the weatherproofing properties of the copings.
The sealing strip 28 prevents rainwater from penetrating between the coping element and the support members.

Claims (8)

1. A coping comprising an elongate coping element having a top member and front and rear members depending from opposite edges of the top member, and a facing element mounted on the front depending member, said facing element and the front depending member on which it is mounted having means whereby the facing element is snap-fitted in position relative to the front depending member.
2. A coping as claimed in claim 1, wherein said means by which the facing element is snap-fitted in position comprises one or more support members secured to the front depending member and having formations adapted in conjunction with the facing element to enable the facing element to be snap-fitted~ on the support member or members.
3. A coping as claimed in claim 2, wherein said formations on the support member or members are formed at the top and bottom edges of the support member or members.
4. A coping as claimed in claim 3, wherein the formation at the top edge of the support member or members is in the form of a part-circular channel and a co-operating formation on the facing element is in the form of a rib which fits in the channel and wherein the formation at the lower edge of the facing element can then be snapped into secure engagement with the support member or members.
5. A coping as claimed in claim 3 or claim 4, wherein the upper end edge of the facing element is sealed with respect to the top member.
6. A coping as claimed in claim 5, wherein said upper end edge of the facing element engages the top member through a sealing strip.
7. A coping as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the coping element is made from sheet metal.
8. A coping as claimed in claim 7, wherein the coping element is made from aluminium sheet and the facing element is an aluminium extrusion.
