Abstract

A guard 7 which is mounted on a vehicle front axle 8 in order to protect it and its associated parts from damage when passing over rough terrain. The guard also protects the steering mechanism. <IMAGE>

Description

MOTOR VEHICLE AXLE GUARD.
This invention relates to a device to protect the front axle and steering mechanism on vehicles used in rough terrain.
The front axle and steerage links are particularly vulnerable to damage on wheeled vehicles because the differential casing and track rods have to be relatively close to the ground. The bumper or guards mounted on the chassis do not provide full protection because they can bounce over a rock which will not clear the axle. Even if there is room for a chassis-mounted guard underneath the axle and track rods, rocks thrown up 3y the wheels can be trapped above it resulting in damage as the suspension moves.
According to the present invention there is provided a guard mounted on the axle suspension bolts thus fixing it to the axle rather than the chassis. It is cut away to present the bottom surface flush with the lowest part of the differential casing; thus ground clearance is not reduced.
It also extends beyond the track rod behind which it is turned up to give maximum strength and protection. The turnup also reduces the risk of large stones penetrating between the guard and axle but because there is no relative movement between them there is much less risk of damage.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 illustrates a guard to this design fitted under a vehicle with its wheels removed.
Figure 2 shows the guard removed from the vehicle to show its construction and fixings.
Referring to the drawing a common suspension arrangement is shown incorporating a radius arm 3 pivoted at 1 and secured to the axle by bolts 4.
The track rod 2 passes between the guard 7 and the arm 3. A clearance hole 6 allows the guard to accommodate the protrusion of the differential casing 5 The guard is formed in substantial metal plate further reinforced by its shape. The turn up at the front allows the guard to ride over any rocks, its strength being such that it can carry the weight of the vehicle. Reinforcing and mounting bars incorporate holes 9 and 10 to fit lengthened axle mounting bolts 4. These bars are extended to the rear in order to give added protection for the track rod 2.
