Abstract

The surface (18) of higher friction, which prevents slippage of articles from the pallet, is transferred onto the pallet, from a surface of the mould cavity (10, 12) within which the pallet has been formed e.g. by rotational casting or blow moulding. The material of the surface may be a relatively hard granular material e.g. sand, or hard plastics, within a plastics material carrier, or a plastics material layer e.g. urethane elastomer in a solvent blend, and the pallet material may be m.d. polyethylene. The material of the surface may be provided on the mould surface by spraying painting or mechanical fixing. <IMAGE>

Description

Improvements in or relating to Moulded Products The present invention concerns improvements in or relating to moulded products, especially but not exclusively products manufactured from a plastics material utilising a rotational moulding technique.
In such moulding operations raw material is placed into a steel mould which is then rotated about two axes simultaneously in ci hot air oven. The plastics material gradually melts on to the surface of the mould which is then removed from the oven and allowed to cool, allowing the plastics material .o solidify. The moulded article can then be removed from the @oul@.
A rotational moulding technique can be utilised to manufacture plastics material pallets and this product exemplifies one of the disadvantages for rotational moulding, that is the low co-ePf:#crent of friction at the product's surface, which gives rise to disadvantages when the product has other opponents stacked thereon, especially if these are also low-friction co-efficient plastics material components.
In the past attempts have been made to overcome this disadvantage. In one such attempt the top surface of the mould has been roughened or textured to produce a corresponding roujhcnlncj or texturing on the top of the article moulded il it. This has a limited effect, especially if the components stacked on the object are also of plastics material. In another attempted solution a small rim has been moulded around thy top edge of the moulded object to prevent components stacked thereon from slipping off. This has the disadvantage of reducing the usuable surface area of the object and is of little or no effect when the components stacked thereon overhang the edge.
In a further attempt to reduce the co-efficient friction of the surface of the moulded object it has been sprayed with a non-slip covering but such a spray has limited adherence to a moulded plastic object and has a limited life. Further attempts to apply non-slip coatings have involved the use of, for example, synthetic rubber mats, but these have to be adhered to or fastened to the surface of the pallet and this is not only time consuming but also relatively expensive.
An object of the present invention is to obviate or mitigate these disadvantages.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a moulded article formed by a rotational moulding technique and having a material with a co-efficient of friction greater than the co-efficient of friction of the material of which the object is moulded intergrally formed with one or more external surface of the article.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of moulding an article of plastics material using a rotational moulding technique, comprising prior to melting raw plastics material in the mould to form the article, coating the surface of the mould corresponding to a surface which requires a hislll co-efficient of friction with an anti-slip substance.
Preferably the anti-slip substance coated on the mould surface reacts with or add-mixes with the material of the article being moulded to form a permanent intergral surface of a relatively high co-efficient of friction in the moulded article.
The substance may include a relatively hard granular material add-mixed with a carrier material. Alternatively it may be a plastics materia ] adapted to form a layer on the said surface of the artirle.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig. 1 shows a two part mould for use in the manufacture of a rotationally moulded plastics material pallet; and Fig. 2 shows a detail from Fig. 1.
A mould for forming a rotationally moulded plastics material pallet comprises first and second interconnect able members 10, 12, defining a cavity 14, into which is supplied a sufficient quantity of raw plastics material to form a hollow pallet. Prior to closing the mould one of its internal surfaces 16 is masked and coated with an anti-slip surface 18, that is a surface having a co-efficient of friction greater than the co-efficient of friction of the moulded plastics material. The substance forming the anti-slip surface may be a plastics materia3 layer or a plastics material carrier with a relatively hard granular material interspersed therewith.
The hard material may be sand or a hard plastics material having a melting point higher than the melting point of the material to be moulded into the pallet. The substance may be fixed to the mould surface 'o) any suitable manner, for example, spraying, painting or mechanical fixing, the fixing being such that after moulding it can be readily removed from the mould surface as part of the moulded pallet.
The two halves 10, 12 of the mould are then clamped together and it is m ci U ri t e d on a support structure in a hot air oven, the support structure being capable of continuously rotating the mould about two mutually perpendicular axes such that as the plastics material within the mould melts and reaches a sufficient temperature it is spread over the mould interior until the entire internal surface is coated to a predetermined thickness, thereby causing the anti-slip layer 18, previously fixed to the surface 16 of the mould, to be intergrally moulded into the surface of the pallet corresponding to said mould surface 16.
After the raw material has been melted and distributed across the mould interior, the mould can be removed from the oven and allowed to cool while still being rotated thereby causing the plastics material to solidify and enabling the mould to be split into its two components 10 and 12 and the moulded pallet, with its anti-slip upper surface, to be removed from the mould.
In a typical example, the plastics material forming the pallet can be:- medium density polyethylene.
The anti-slip substance can be urethane elastomer in hydrocarbon/alcohol solvent blend. A suitable substance comprises aliphatic petroleum distillate, rubber and turpentine derivatives in a hydrocarbon solvent. The v e n t. T h e substances in the distillate are distilled at temperatures in the range 60-95 C. The rubber is preferably styrene-butadine and the derivative are hydrogenated rosin derivative and 2-pinene polymer. An anti-oxidant is included in the mixture.
The hydrocarbon solvent includes N-hexane, cyclohexane, propane, dimethyl ether, N-butane and isobutane. Another suitable substance comprises acrylate copolymer, hydrocarbon resin, plasticiser in a solvent of 1.1 .1 ,-Trichloroethane, butane and propane. An alternative anti-slip substance can be a suitable granular mix suspended in an ethylene, or equivalent, based terrier.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention, for example, technique can be utilised in other moulding operations which are not necessarily rotational moulding operations, for example, blow moulding operations. The mould shape can take any convenient form and the anti-slip adhesive can take any appropriate composition provided that il: is compatible with the material of the object being moulded so that it forms an integral part thereof after the moulding operation has been concluded.

Claims (9)

Claims
1. A moulded article formed by a rotational moulding technique and having a material with a co-efficient of friction greater than the co-efficient of friction of the material of which the object is moulded integrally formed with one or more external surface of the article.
2. A method of moulding an article of plastics material using a rotational moulting technique, comprising prior to melting raw plastics material in the mould to form the article, coating the surface of the mould and corresponding to a surface which require3 a high co-efficient of friction with an anti-slip substance.
3. A method as claimed in claim 2, in which the anti-slip substance coated on the mould surface reacts with or add-mixes with the material cf the article being moulded to form a permanent integral surface of a relatively high co-efficient of friction in the moulded article.
4. A method as claimed in claim 3, in which the substance may include relatively hard granular material add-mixed with a carrier material.
5. A method as claimed in claim 3 in which the substance is a plastic material adapted to form a layer at the surface of the article.
6. A method as claimEd in claim 5, in which the plastics material forming the layer comprises aliphate petroleum distillate, styrene - butadine rubber and turpentine derivatives.
7. A method as claimed in claim 6, in which the plastics material is applied to the mould surface as a suspension in a hydrocarbon solvent.
8. A method oF moulding an article substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
