Abstract
Pairs of extrusions 1, 2 have complementary ribs 8 and recesses 18. The side faces 20, 21 of each recess diverge outwardly at an angle which substantially matches that of the side walls 9, 10 of the rib 8. When the rib 8 is received in the recess there is a small gap 23 between the end wall 11 of the rib and the bottom wall 16, 17 of the recess. A continuous bead of a vinyl oxirane adhesive is applied along the centre of each recess 18 and the rib 8 is urged into the recess so that the adhesive spreads along the gap 23. The wedging action of the rib prevents much of the adhesive from passing between the rib and the divergent walls of the recess and allows a reliable bond to be achieved despite variations in manufacturing tolerances of the extrusions. <IMAGE>
Description
DECKING MEMBERS This s invention relates to decki.ng members as used in portable assembly staging, particularly, but not necessarily exclusi.vely, staging of the kind described in European Patent Specification No. 0 291 275.
In portable assembly stagi.ng it i.s important that the decking members are lightweight for ease of transportation and handling, whilst at the same time having good torsional and longitudinal rigi.di.ty. The idea of using a hollow extruded section of lightweight metal has many attractions, but the cross sectional area of a decking member formed of a si.ngle extrusion would require a certain minimum wall thickness so that the amount by whi.ch the weight of a single extrusion can be reduced is limited. In the above-menti.oned European Patent Specification i.t is proposed to form the decking members of smaller extrusions rivetted together in edge-to-edge relation, but this too requires a certain minimum wall thickness in the region of the rivets in order to maintain the strength of the decking members. Rivetti.ng is also a time consumi.ng process, and the rivets are potential weak points in the structure.
The object of the present invention is to devise a form of decking which is low cost, of minimum wei.ght, and yet has good torsional and longitudinal rigidity.
According to the present invention, a decking member for a staging structure comprises at least two hollow metal extrusions which are bonded together in side-byside relation by an adhesive.
The use of an adhesive allows the wall thickness of each extrusion to be significantly reduced and markedly speeds up the manufacturing process.
Peferably, in order to enhance the strength of the joint, one extrusion is provided with a longitudinally extending well and the other extrusion is provided with a complementary longitudinally extendi.ng rib for reception in the well, the adhesive being inserted between the rib and the well.
The opposite side faces of the well are preferably outwardly divergent and the side faces of the rib are convergent in a complementary manner such that the rib is a wedge fit in the well. Such an arrangement readily accommodates minor variations in the dimensions of the extrusions which may be introduced during the extrusion process. There is preferably a gap between the bottom of the well and the opposed end wall of the rib to receive the adhesive. the adhesive thus spreads along the gap on engagement of the two extrusions and, because of the wedging action, has little tendency to exude from the sides of the well.
The preferred adhesive is a hybrid between a fast curing acrylic adhesive and a two component epoxy.
Two-part vinyl oxi.rane adhesives have been found to give best results. These have good gap filling properties, form a high strength bond with metals, and do not require accurate metering of the two components.
The invention includes staging comprising a pair of truss members supported with a rearward inclination and a plurality of decking members as described above bridging the truss members in a stepped configuration.
The invention will now be exemplified in the following description to be read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing whi.ch is a perspective view of a section through a decking member of the invention.
The decki.ng member compri.ses three hollow extruded aluminium sections 1 to 3 of equal length and depth.
The two outer sections are of similar cross section shape and each comprise spaced parallel top and bottom walls 4, 5 which are joined by an outer side wall 6 and a mi.ddle partition wall 7. The inner side of the section i.s formed by an outwardly extending channel section rib 8 which comprises spaced upper and lower side walls 9 and 10 joi.ned by an outer end wall 11.
The end wall 11 is substantially parallel to the side wall 6 and the partition wall 7. The side walls 9, 10 of the channel section converge towards the end wall 11 and are stepped i.nwardly at their junctions with the top and bottom walls 4 and 5 by the thickness of those walls.
The middle section 2 also comprises spaced parallel top and bottom walls 14 and 15. These walls are joined by spaced walls 16, 17 which are inset from the edges of the top and bottom walls to form the bottom walls of channel-shaped wells 18 running along both sides of the middle section. The upper and lower inner side faces 20, 21 of these wells diverge away from the bottom walls 16, 17 at an angle which substantially matches that of the side walls 9, 10 of the rib 8. Thus, the rib 8 of each of the outer sections is a wedging fit within the wells 18, and when the ribs are received therein there is a small gap 23 between each end wall 11 of the rib and the bottom wall 16, 17 of the appropriate well. Furthermore, the top and bottom walls 4, 5 of the outer sections are substantially coplanar with the walls 14 and 15 of the middle section.
In order to join the sections together a r.nnti nunuFi
bead of a vinyl oxirane adhesive such as PERMABONDXV501 is applied along the centre of each well 18beginning 75 to 100mm from each end of the extrusion. The ribs 8 are then urged into the wells 18 so that the adhesive tends to spread along the gaps 23. The wedging action of the rib prevents much of the adhesive from passi.ng between the rib and the divergent walls of the recess and allows a reliable bond to be achi.eved despite variations in manufacturing tolerances of the extrusions.
The decking members are used in staging in accordance with European Patent Specification No. 0 291 275, the disclosure of whi.ch is incorporated herein by reference.
The decking members could be formed of two, four or more extrusions all joined together in the manner described, depending on the required width of the decking members.
