Abstract
A device for sealing the junction between a floor-covering and an upright surface comprises a sealing strip and a base strip. The base strip extends underneath the floor-covering and has two upright elements 2, 3, A locking ridge 5 or 6 runs along each upright element, on the face facing the other element. The sealing strip has a bar 10 extending along its length. The bar 10 engages with the locking ridges 5, 6 so that the sealing strip joins the floor-covering and the upright surface and forms a seal. The base strip has a spacer ridge 4 to provide a gap between the upright surface and the base strip for gripping the base strip. The base strip is extruded from uPVC. The sealing strip is coextruded from uPVC and nitryl rubber, the nitryl rubber giving flexible edges to the sealing strip to enable effective sealing. <IMAGE>
Description
FLOOR-COVERING EDGE SEAL vinyl floor-covering is widely used both in domestic residences and also in industrial settings, but its use can pose many problems. It is well known in the floorcovering trade that considerable skill and time is required when fitting vinyl floor-coverings. Mistakes made when cutting the vinyl are vers difficult to rectify and one slip of the trimming knife can often result in irrevocable loss of the vinyl material. The space at the edge of the vinyl floor-covering can also cause problems.
L'sers may find that if they have spiLlages of liquid it can flo freely down the edge of the floor- covering and may either run underneath the hiclQboard of a fitted kitchen unit or bath pane or run underneath the vinyl b capillary action and thus flow underneath the skirting board. Dirt may become trapped in this space and this can be difficult to clean. This may pose hygiene problems which would be particularly important in doctors' surgeries and treatment rooms.
The inventio seeks to overcome these problems bs pro-iding a device for sealing the .1 unction between an upright surface and a floor-covering.
The invention provides a device for sealing the .iunction between an upright surface and a floor-covering, the device comprising an elongate sealing strip and a base strip each having respective' means to engage the other wherein the base strip is adapted to extend underneath the floor-covering and, in use, the sealing strip engages tith the base strip such that one longitudinal edge of the sealing strip lies against the upright surface and the other longitudinal edge lies against the floorcovering.
Preferably, the base strip has an upright face which can be used as a guide wen cutting the floor-covering.
Advantageously, the said engaging means of the base strip comprises two upright elements extending along the base strip, substantially parallel to one another and substantially parallel to a longitudinal edge of the base strip the elements being spaced from each other to accomodate the engaging means of the sealing strip.
Conveniently, the upright elements are rigid. Desirably, each upright element has a respective locking ridge on the face facing the other element, the ridges extending substantially along the length of the faces, each ridge being spaced from the top of its respective associated element by approximately the same distance in each case and the locking ridges being resiliently biased towards each other.
Advantag.eously, the sealing strip has a bar extending substantially along the length of the strip, the bar being spaced from the sealing strip such that when the bar is pushed between the locking ridges and is retained bs them, one longitudinal edge of the sealing strip is caused to lie against the said upright surface and the other longitudinal edge is caused to lie against the said floor-covering as said.
Conveniently, the upright element nearest the longitudinal edge of the base strip has a ridge extending substantially along the length of the face nearest the said edge of the base strip. the ridge being spaced from the top of the upright face. This provides a gap between the base strip and the upright surface to enable the base strip to be gripped when placing the base strip in position. Desirably, the longitudinal edges of the sealing strip are flexible, such that when t.he edges lie against the upright surface and the floor-covering respectively, a seal is formed between the longitudinal edge and the upright surface or floor-covering.
Conveniently, the sealing strip is made by a co-extrusion process. Desirably, the flexible edges of the sealing strip are made from nitryl rubber or flexible PVC and the remaining portion of the sealing strip is made from uPVC.
Preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sealing strip and base piece; Figure 2 is an end view of the sealing strip and base piece enraged with each other and in position between a kitchen unit base and the vinyl floor-co-ering; and
Figure 3 is an end section of an alternative embodiment of the intention.
Referring first to Figure 1, the base strip comprises of an elongate flat strip 1 part of which extends underneath the floor-covering. The width of this flat strip is between 10 mm and 15 mm and is preferably 12 mm. A first upright element 2 extends substantially along the length of one longitudinal edge of the flat strip 1. A second upright element 3 extends substantially parallel to the upright element 2 and is spaced from the first element 2 by between 1.5 mm and 3.5 mm, preferably 2.2 mm. The upright elements 2, 3 are of approximately the same height, their height being between 6 mm and 10 mm, preferably 8 mm.The first upright element 2 has a spacer ridge 4 extending substantially along its length on the side of the element remote from the second upright element 3, the spacer ridge 4 being spaced from the top of the upright element 2. Each upright element 2, 3 has a respective locking ridge 5, 6 which extends substantially along the length of the faces on the elements nearest to each other. The locking ridges 5, 6 are respectively spaced from the top of their associated faces 2, 3 by approximately the same distance.
The sealing strip comprises two flexible edge portions 7, 8. The width of the upper portion 7 is between 4 mm and 8 mm and is preferably 6 mm. The width of the lower portion 8 is between 10 mm and 20 mm and is preferably 15 mm. The central portion Q between the flexible edges 8 is relatively rigid.The width of the central portion 9 mar be between 2 mm and 10 mm but, is preferably between . mm and , mm. Beneath the central portion 9 there is a bar 10 which extends substantially for the length of the sealing strip, the bar 10 being joined to the portion Y b a ueb 11.
The respective thicknesses of the flat strip 1 , upright elements 2, 3 and central portion 9, the base strip and tlle sealing strip may be between 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm but, are preferably 1 mm.
The base strip is extruded from PVC or uPVC. The sealing strip is made by a co-extrusion process. Firstly, the central portion 9 together with the bar 10 and the web 11 are extruded from uPVC then, while this is still hot, the flexible portions 7 and 8 are added by a further extrusion of nitro rubber or flexible PVC. Nitro rubber will drip most surfaces and will therefore form a very effective seal . The uPVC used in the sealing strip is an anti-fade uP\~C and is made in a range of colours so that the user can choose the colour which best matches the vinyl floor-cos-ering and also the decoration of the room.As the sealing strip is easy to fit and also to remove, if the decoration in the room is changed then the user ma simply buy a sealing strip of a different colour to match the change of decoration.
The sealing strip engages with the base strip by means of the bar 10 and the locking ridges 5 and 6. This is shown in Figure 2. The base strip is placed on the floor with the spacer ridge 4 resting against the upright surface 12. This may be a wall, a skirting board or the kick-board of a kitchen unit or bath. The flat strip I extends underneath the vinyl floor-covering and, if necessary, the base strip can be fixed to the floor by means of adhesive such as double-sided tape or an adhesive pad underneath the flat strip 1.To facilitate this process, the base strip may be gripped by inserting the fingers into the space between the upright surface 12 and the upright element 2, which is created b- the presence of ridge 4. The bar 10 of the sealing strip is then pushed between the to locking ridges 5 and 6. The bar 10 is now held firmly in position between the locking ridges 5 and 6. This forces the free edge of the upper flexible portion 5 against the upright surface where it forms a seal. Likewise, the free edge of the lower flexible portion 8 is forced against the vinyl floorcovering and this also forms a seal.
Where two devices meet at an angle, the ends of the devices may be mitred against each other. Alternatively, a separate angled joining piece can be made, the ends of the device being butted against this joining piece.
The dimensions given are suitable for domestic use. If te sealing strip and base strip are required or industrial use then the dimensions can be increased accordingly. In an alternative embodiment, shown in
Figure 3, the locking ridges D, 6 are replaced by a single ridge 14 running along the top longitudinal edge of the second element 3, on the side of the element nearest to first element 2. The locking bar 10 is replaced by a ridge 15 which is so shaped as to fit underneath the ridge 14 and be held in position by the ridge 14. In addition, although the feature is chosen independently of the engaging means, the spacer 4' is formed as a rectangular section bar instead of a convex ridge.
The present invention overcomes two main problems that are encountered with the use of vinyl floor-covering.
Firstly, the difficult,- in fitting the floor-covering.
The base strip. especially the second upright element 3, acts as a cutting-guide for knives to enable the fitter to achieve a straight edge. The sealing strip providers an effective and unobtrusive method of compensating for an errors in cutting, thus bringing the fitting of vinyl floor-covering more into the scope of DIE'. Secondly, the sealing strip seals the junction between the vinyl floor covering and the upright surface thus providing an effective barrier to spillages of liquid and also improving hygiene br reducing dirt traps in corners.
Claims (1)
1. A device for sealing the unction between an
upright surface and a floor-covering comprising an
elongate sealing strip and a base strip each having
respective means to engage the other, wherein the
base strip is adapted to extend underneath the floor-covering and the sealing strip engages with
the base strip such that one longitudinal edge of
the sealing strip lies against the upright surface
and t he other lonaltudinal edge lies against the floor-covering.
2. A device according to Claim 1 wherein the base strip has an upright face which can be used as a
guide when cutting the floor-covering.
3. A device according to Claim 1 wherein the said
engaging means of the base strip comprises two
upright. elements extending along the base strip
substantially parallel to one another and substantialln parallel to a longitudinal edge of
the base strip, the elements being spaced front each
other to accommodate the engagind means of the
sealing strip.
4. A device according to Claims 2 or 3 wherein the
upright elements are rigid.

the face facing the other element, the ridges extending substantially along the length of the faces, each ridge being spaced from the top of its
respective associated element by approximately the
same distance in each case.
A A device according to Claim 5 wherein the locking ridges are resilientlr biased towards each other.
A A device according to Claim 6 wherein the sealing strip has a bar extending substantially along the
length of the strip, the bar being spaced from the
sealing strip such that when the bar is pushed
between the locking ridges and is retained by them,
one longitudinal edge of the sealing strip is
caused to lie against the said upright surface and
the other lonyitudinal edge is caused to lie
against the said floor-covering.
8. A device according to Claim 3 wherein the upright
element nearest the longitudinal edge of the base
strip has a ridge extending substantially along the
length of the face nearest the said edge of the
base strip, the ridge being spaced from the top of
the upright face.
9. A device according to any one of the preceding
claims wherein the longitudinal edges of the
sealing strip are flexible such that when the edges
lie against the upright surface and the floor
covering respectively, a seal is formed between the
longitudinal edge and the upright surface or floor
covering.
10. A device according to any one of the preceding
claims wherein the sealing strip is made by a co
extrusion process.
'1. A device according to Claim 10 wherein the flexible
edges of the sealing strip are made from nitryl
rubber or flexible PVC and the remaining portion of
the sealing strip is made from uPVC.
12. A device according to Claim 1 and substantially as
described herein with reference to Figures 1 and 2.
13. A device according to Claim 1 and substantially as
described herein with reference to Figure 3.
14. A method of sealing a junction between a floor
covering and an upright surface with a device
according to an one of the preceding claims
wherein the base strip is placed on the floor
against the upright surface such that part of the
base strip extends underneath the floor-covering, and the sealing strip is then engaged with the base
strip such that the sealing strip extends between
the upright surface and the floor-covering and
forms a seal.
15. A method of sealing a junction between a floor
covering and an upright surface according to Claim
14 comprising the additional initial step of using
the base strip as a cutting guide for knives.
