Description
PROTECTIVE COVER
This invention relates to a protective cover for a toilet seat.
Toilet seats in many places are likely to harbour germs and particularly as an increasing numbers of diseases appear to be transmitted through body fluids, it is desirable to be able to protect against contact with a toilet seat.
While it is known to provide a sheet of tissue material, with a cutout, which can be placed over a toilet seat and then flushed down the toilet after use, the known tissue is too flimsy to provide adequate protection and there is no means of retaining it in the correct position relative to the seat.
An object of the present invention is to provide a toilet seat cover which it is intended that the owner should carry with him/her, place on any toilet seat to be used before use, and then remove and wash so that it is reusable.
According to the present invention a toilet seat cover comprises an annul us of washable, low absorbent, material shaped to fit over a toilet seat and having an outer edge which is elasticated so that it will stretch over and be retained below the outer edge of the toilet seat.
Such a cover is light-weight enough to be conveniently carried in a handbag, pocket or the like, strong enough to provide good protection and because of its low absorbency can be quickly washed and will not take long to dry.
Preferably the material is nylon, pvc or other synthetic material. The whole material may be stretchy or may have an elasticated material incorporated adjacent the outer edge.
Preferably the cover is provided with hooks positioned to be engaged with the hinges of a toilet seat so as to further locate and retain the cover in position during use. Such hooks are also preferably of plastics material or covered with a plastics material.
One embodiment of protecive cover, according to the invention, will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing which shows a plan view of a cover with the edge stretched.
The cover 1 comprises an oval annul us of light-weight, washable, low absorbent material shaped to fit over the upper surface of a toilet seat. The outer marginal portion 3 of the material is elasticated so that it can be stretched around the outer edge of the toilet seat and will be retained thereon or just thereunder. In the prefered form the outer edge is formed with two elasticated seams 4 and 5 spaced by about 5 cms, edge 4 being retained on the rim of the seat and the outer portion then extending down the side of the toilet pan.
The inner edge 6 of the material substantially coincides with the inner edge of the seat.
At its rear edge the material is formed with two plastics material hooks 8, flexibly attached to the material and designed to engage with the hinges of the seat to provide further locating means.
The material is sufficiently light-weight that it can easily be carried around by the user, particularly when traveling in countries with primative toilet facilities, is quickly attached to a toilet seat and detached again after use.
After use it is recommended that the user soaks the appliance in lightly disiifected water and because of its nonabsorbancy it will immediately dry and be ready again for use. The cover is preferably provided together with a bag in which it may be carried around.
