Abstract

In a method of cleaning, buffing or polishing a fragile material, such as building facades of stone, painted surfaces or window glass, a jet of air containing particles of vegetable origin is directed on to the fragile material. The particles are in powdered or granular form and may include particles of corn stalks which have been crushed and reduced to powder.

Description

PATENT OF INVENTION "Method of cleanitig buffing or polishing a fragile
materialO Bernard THOMANN The invention relates to a method of cleaning, buffing or polishing fragile materials, such as stone and paint.
A cleaning method is already known using silica particles which are projected with a jet of air or water so as to effect, in particular, the cleaning of the facades of buildings and ancient monuments. A method of this type is suitable for hard stone, whereas it has to be avoided for delicate materials because of the resultant disintegration of the surface.
For example, this method cannot be used for the reconditioning of delicate stone facades, for cleaning marble-type stone nor for any materials which have been polished.
It is an aim of the invention to obviate these disadvantages and, according to the invention there is provided a method of cleaning, buffing or polishing a fragile material, such as stone or paint, wherein a jet of air containing particles of vegetable origin is directed on to the fragile material.
The particles of vegetable origin may be in powdered or granular form and may be obtained by pulverisation or crushing, depending on the material to be cleaned and its polished or unpolished surface condition.
Particles of corn stalks which have been is crushed and then reduced to powder constitute particles of vegetable origin which are particularly suitable for this type of delicate cleaning.
The method of the invention can be used for cleaning for example various different types of stone, including granite and marble, and in addition metals (particularly aluminium), paints, window glass, etc.
The most important advantage of the method lies in the fact that it enables cleaning and polishing to be effected without attacking the base material. However, this method also has other significant advantages and, in particular, the projection of the vegetable particles can be effected with a jet of air, i.e. in a dry process. Therefore, this method can be applied inside homes for cleaning paint, paintings, window glass, etc., the particles being subsequently recovered very easily by suction in view of their low density.
The method could thus also be used for cleaning marble-type stone, granite and other polished stone, so as to clean and restore its original polished condition.
Similarly, the method could be used for cleaning wood panelling, furniture and flooring by adapting the nature of the vegetable product, and its grain size, to the nature of the material to be cleaned.
Generally speaking, this method makes it possible to clean fragile materials which, hitherto, had to be cleaned using a liquid cleaning product of acidic or basic character depending on the circumstances and nature of the material to be cleaned; in all cases these cleaning products result in corrosion of the material or an adjoining material.
c
