Abstract
An identity card carrying a visual indication (11-14) of the identity of an authorised individual or organisation and having at least one surface formed of synthetic polymeric material is embossed on that surface with a further indication 16 in Braille characters of the identity of the individual or organisation or of the credibility of the card bearer. <IMAGE>
Description
Identity Card
The present invention is an identity card.
It has become a recommended security practice in recent years to advise any person approached by anyone claiming to be a representative of an organisation to ask for some means of identification whereby the claim can be supported. Thus, for example, if a householder is approached by a nan claiming to be a council employee or, Say, a gas board employee, especially one requesting access to the premises, the householder is strongly advised to require such evidence of identification. To this end, most public service bodies and many private organisations issue identity cards to all their staff or to such staff as are required to approach the general public.
However, a serious problem arises when a householder has impaired vision and is therefore unable to redd the card. He must either call for assistanoe in checking the identity card, which is of course incansenient and a source of possible delay, or take the caller on trust, which defeats the purpose of the identity card.
It is an object of the present Invention to provide a nsvel form of identity card, which is devised with the aim of overocming this disadvantage of conventical such cards.
The identity card according to the present invention carries a visual indication of the identity of an individual or organisation, has at least one surface formed of synthetic polymeric material, and is embossed on that surface with a further indication in
Braille characters of the identity of the individual or organisation or of the credibility of the bearer of the card.
The identity card according to the invention may be made wholly of a synthetic polymeric material, in.the manner of a bank card or cheque card, or may be of thin card or paper or the like encapsulated in a synthetic polymeric material, which is a form often adopted in the case of personal identity cards. Thus the visual indication of identity may appear on the outer surface of the card, as in the first-mentioned form of card, or may be printed or otherwise marked upon the encapsulated layer in the case of an encapsulated card.
The visual indication may comprise the name of the individual bearer of the card and/or the name of the organisation represented and/or a photograph of the authorised card bearers
The synthetic polymeric material of which the card itself is formed or within which the card is encapsulated may be any of those materials having the characteristics appropriate to such cards and conventionally used for that purpose. Thus the card overall should be fairly rigid but not brittle and its rigidity may be an inherent characteristic of the synthetic polymeric material or may be derived largely fran the material of an encapsulated layer.Typical synthetic polyzeric materials suitable for production of a card of the na-encapsulated type include polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene, while encapsulated cards may typically be enclosed between thin layers of a polyester, or polyethylene, or blends of these materials, or of polystyrene.
The indication in Braille consists of a series of raised dots in formations corresponding to characters of the Braille alphabet. The Braille characters may, for example, spell the name of the authorised holder of the card and/or the name of the organisation which he is authorised to represent. As a less preferred form of indication, the characters may simply spell out in Braille a general message confirming the authenticity of the card or conveying reassurance of another kind to the householder.
In its most preferred form, the identity card according to the present invention ccmprises a layer of thick paper (which may be photographic paper) or thin pasteboard bearing a visual indication of the identity of an individual or organisation, said layer being encapsulated between layers of a synthetic polymeric material, and the card is embossed after the encapsulation step with the further indication in Braille.
The e encapsulation step in the production of the card in its preferred form may be carried out in various ways. At its most simple the step may comprise heat-sealing the paper or board between sheets of the synthetic polymeric material, optionally with crirrirg together of the layers. Alternatively, the encapsulating layers may be ultrasonically welded together, for example spot-welded, or may be bonded together chemically.
The embossing of the card may be effected in a press or a die. Particularly in the case of an encapsulated card, it is strongly preferred to carry out the embossing in a way which ensures that the card does not beccme pierced as a result. With this in mind, the most preferred way of carrying out the embossing is by means of a heated die.
The invention will now be further described and illustrated with reference to the accompanying drawings, vhlch illustrate one preferred embodiment of the identity card according to the present invention and wherein:
Fig. 1 shows the identity card in plan;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation from one edge
of the card of Fig. 1, in the direction
indicated by the arrow II; and
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view along
the line III-III of Fig. 1. In both Figs. 2
and 3 the thickness of the identity card has
been exaggerated somewhat, in the interest of
clarity.
The illustrated identity card includes a rectangular piece of stiff, thin paperboard 10, bearing several features designed to identify the card holder and his authority. Thus the card 10 includes the name 11 of the organisation which avloys him, his own name 12, his photograph 13 and his signature 14. The card 10 has been placed in an envelope comprising twc layers, 15 and 16, of a polyester/polyethylene blend material and the layers 15, 16 have been heat-sealed in a continuous marginal zone 17 to encapsulate the card. The layers 15, 16 typically comprise a blend of 40 to 70 per cent by weight of polyester and the balance polyethylene.
Following the encapsulation step, the multi-layer sandwich is placed in.a heated die to emboss an identifying message 18 in
Braille characters on the surface 15 of the identity card. The notional message illusrrated oould, for example, identify the name of the employing organisation or of the card-holding atployee. The embossing is such that, although indentations 19 corresponding to the Braille dots appear on the rear surface 16 of the identity card, the sandwich of layers is not pierced at any point and the card layer 10 thus remains protected fran moisture or any other harmful penetrating medium.
As will readily be understood ,the identity card may be used in the normal manner for confirming the credentials of a user to a sighted person but is also suitable for a similar purpose then the person wishing to question a caller is poorly sighted or blind.
