Abstract
A cold pack for application to parts of human or other animal bodies for therapeutic treatments thereof, comprises a readily deformable envelope (10) containing a multiplicity of separate small hollow elements (12), each containing a refreezable substance (13), and which allow the envelope to deform, when applied in use to a body area, such that the contact area of the envelope readily conforms to the surface contours of said body area. <IMAGE>
Description
THERAPEUTIC COLD PACKS
This invention relates to cold packs for application to parts of human or other animal bodies for therapeutic treatments thereof.
The cold treatment of parts of the body has been conventionally carried out using ice packs. In hospitals, such packs generally comprise crushed ice placed in plastic bags. Such packs are inconvenient to use, tend to leak leading to dampness of a wound or body area to which the packs are applied, and are not reusable.
EP-0,123,949 disclosed a deformable bag for use as a cooling medium comprising a flexible envelope containing a multiplicity of separate small freezable pieces which permit the envelope to be freely deformed to cover intimately any curved body portion on which it is placed.
Such a cold pack is substantially leak-proof, reusable and capable of adapting readily to the surface contours of different parts of a body. The individual freezable pieces are made of gel prepared from a mixture of a water-solution organic compound and a polyvinyl alcohol in accordance with a specified procedure.
The object of the invention is to provide a therapeutic cold pack comprising an envelope containing a multiplicity of separate small refreezable elements, such elements being relatively simple and convenient to produce.
The invention provides a therapeutic cold pack comprising a readily deformable envelope containing a multiplicity of separate small hollow elements, each containing a refreezable substance, which allow the envelope to deform, when applied in use to a body area, such that the contact area of the envelope readily conforms to the surface contours of said body area.
The envelope may be made of a plastics film.
Said elements may be spherical and may be made of a plastics material, preferably a heat sealable plastics material.
Said refreezable substance preferably contains an anti-freezing agent and may be in liquid or gel form.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation of a therapeutic cold pack in accordance with the invention, and
Figure 2 is a cross-section through an individual cooling element, a multiplicity of which fill the pack of
Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a therapeutic cold pack embodying the invention comprises a generally rectangular bag (10) formed of a film of plastics material which is non-toxic and sufficiently strong to contain a multiplicity of discrete coolant elements which fill the bag whilst allowing it to remain readily deformable. Suitable plastics material would be polyvinylchloride, polyethylene and polypropylene film.
The plastics film is initially formed into a tubular sleeve and then heat sealed along one end seam and, after being filled with the coolant elements (11), is heat sealed along the other end seal to form an envelope which completely encapsulates the coolant elements (11).
As illustrated in Figure 2, each coolant element (11) comprises a hollow sphere (12) of a heat sealable plastics material, for example polypropylene or polyethylene, which is filled with a coolant (13) in either liquid or gel form.
The coolant is injected into each hollow sphere and the injection aperture heat sealed. The coolant is any suitable material which can be readily frozen and re-frozen, e.g.
solutions of anti-freezing agents such as ethylene glycol.
A cold pack in accordance with the invention is readily reusable merely by re-freezing the coolant (13), is substantially leak proof and is capable of adapting very readily to the surface contours of different parts of the body. A range of different sized bags can be provided for application to different areas of the body and, if required, for application to adults and children. Specific examples of a possible practical size of pack in accordance with the invention are bags, having dimensions of 16 cm X 14 cm, 19 cm
X 19 cm and 27 cm X 18 cm. The size of pack selected is that most appropriate for the body area concerned. The size of the plastics spheres (12) again can be selected in accordance with desired usages. However it is thought that a practical diametrical range of such spheres is 5 - 15 mm.
Packs in accordance with the invention can be used for a variety of medical and sporting uses and for veterinary uses and indeed it is envisaged that such packs could be custom-made for specific usages.
Claims (7)
1. A therapeutic cold pack comprising a readily deformable envelope containing a multiplicity of separate small hollow elements, each of which contain a refreezable substance, and which allow the envelope to deform, when applied in use to a body area, such that the contact area of the envelope readily conforms to the surface contours of said body area.
2. A cold pack according to claim 1, wherein the envelope is made of plastics film.
3. A cold pack according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein said elements are spherical.
4. A cold pack according to any of claims 1-3 wherein said elements are made of plastics material.
5. A cold pack according to claim 4 wherein said elements are made of heat sealable plastics material.
6. A cold pack according to any one of claims 1-5 wherein said refreezable substance contains an antifreezing agent.
7. A cold pack substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
