Abstract

A divan bed (1) has a floor-standing base whereof an end section (3) on the upper part thereof is tiltable to provide an inclined head or foot rest, said tiltable end section serving as a lid for a storage space therebelow. A mattress (2) for use in combination with the divan bed comprises two mattress portions (2a and b) interconnected at their adjacent upper and lower edges by fastener means whereof the upper is secured and the lower is released so enabling the mattress portions to hinge relative to each other about the upper fastener means, the open and closed condition of the fastener means being reversed when the mattress is turned. <IMAGE>

Description

A DIVAN BED This invention relates to a divan bed of the kind having a floor-standing base with little ground clearance and a mattress on said base.

It has previously been proposed to utilise the hollow interior of a divan base for storage purposes, e.g. by providing sideways removable drawers. It has also been proposed to provide the frame of a bed with a tiltable head or foot section in order to enable the trunk or legs of an occupant to be inclined as desired with respect to the horizontal.

According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a divan bed having a floor-standing base whereof an end section on the upper part thereof is tiltable to provide an inclined head or foot rest, said tiltable end section serving as a lid for a storage space therebelow.

Preferably, the bed has a mattress comprising two mattress portions interconnected at their adjacent upper and lower edges by fastener means, preferably zip fasteners, whereof the upper is secured and the lower is released so enabling the mattress portions to hinge relative to each other about the upper fastener means, the open and closed condition of the fastener means being reversed when the mattress is turned. Preferably, the mattress portions are contiguous with the tiltable and nontiltable surface sections of the divan base respectively.

According to a further aspect of the present invention separate protection is sought for tr.e mattress as hereinbefore defined for use with a divan base in accordance with the invention or any other divan base or bed frame or the like requiring a mattress with relatively hingable portions.

The invention in its various aspects will now be further described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view from one end of a divan bed with base and mattress, in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the side of the base of the divan bed of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a mattress in accordance with the invention with the two hinged portions thereof folded one on top of the other to illustrate the method of connection and with an insert illustrating the fastener means; Fig. 4 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1 but from the side showing the divan with tilted end, and Fig. 5 is a view to an enlarged scale of part of Fig. 4 showing details of the construction of the tilting end, with the mattress removed.

Referring now to the drawings, the exemplary divan bed comprises a floor standing divan base 1 and a mattress 2 having relatively hinged portions 2a, 2b. The divan base 1 has a top end section 3 which is tiltable to a desired inclination as shown by way of example in Fig. 4. The tiltable end section 3 may be provided at the foot end of the bed as shown in Fig. 1 in which a headboard 4 (held by a fitting not shown) is indicated in dash-dot line at the opposite end of the bed. A corresponding fitting may be provided at the opposite end of the bed so that the headboard 4 may be moved to either end of the bed according to choice thus providing the occupant of the bed with the possibility of a tiltable head or foot section. A stop plate 5 is provided for preventing the mattress 2 from sliding relative to the base 1 when the section 3 is tilted. The tiltable section 3 preferably occupies about 1/3 of the length of the bed and the space therebelow is constructed as a hollow storage space 6.

The mattress 2 is contiguous with the divan base 1 and the portions 2a, 2b thereof are contiguous with the non-tiltable and tiltable sections of the base respectively. The top and bottom edges of the end faces of the mattress portions 2a, 2b are interconnectible by top and bottom fastening means, preferably zip fasteners as shown in the inset to Fig. 3, the upper fastener (7 in Fig. 3) at any one time being fastened to provide a hinge about which the mattress portions 2a, 2b can pivot relative to each other. The lower fastener (8 in Fig. 3) remains unfastened. If and when the mattress is inverted the condition of the fasteners 7, 8 is reversed so that what is now the top fastener 8 is fastened while the now lower fastener 7 is opened.

Claims

1. A divan bed having a floor-standing base whereof an end section on the upper part thereof is tiltable to provide an inclined head or foot rest, said tiltable end section serving as a lid for a storage space therebelow.

2. A bed as claimed in claim 1, wherein the end section is tiltable to a desired inclination.

3. A bed as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein opposite ends of the base are provided with fittings for receiving a headboard.

4. For or in combination with a divan bed as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, a mattress comprising two mattress portions interconnected at their adjacent upper and lower edges by fastener means whereof the upper is secured and the lower is released so enabling the mattress portions to hinge relative to each other about the upper fastener means, the open and closed condition of the fastener means being reversed when the mattress is turned.

5. A mattress as claimed in claim 4, wherein the fastener means comprise zip or sliding clamp fasteners.

6. A bed as claimed in claim 5, wherein the mattress portions are contiguous with the tiltable and non-tiltable surface sections of the divan base respectively.

7. A divan bed substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
