Abstract

An item of jewellery (e.g. a ring, brooch, watch, necklace or the like), comprises one or more precious or semi-precious gemstone 24 of polished form, e.g. a full-cut diamond, disposed between two layers 21, 22 of translucent (preferably transparent) material (e.g. coloured or colourless sapphire crystal), the polished gemstone(s) being attached by one facet 25, e.g. the "table", to at least one of said two layers by a translucent (preferably transparent) adhesive. The adhesive may comprise acetoxysilane. Where the item of jewellery is an analogue watch, the gemstones can be arranged to provide index marks therefor. <IMAGE>

Description

JEWELLERY ITEMS This invention relates to jewellery items (e.g. rings, brooches, watches, necklaces and the like), particularly jewellery items incorporating polished gemstones.
One of the problems inherent in gemstone jewellery is that the mount for the gemstone necessarily interferes with viewing the entire gemstone from all angles. This detracts from the potential beauty of the gemstone's appearance and the present invention aims to overcome or at least mitigate this disadvantage.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided an item of jewellery comprising at least one precious or semi-precious gemstone of polished form disposed between two layers of translucent (preferably transparent) material, the polished gemstone(s) being attached by one facet thereof to at least one of said two layers by a translucent (preferahly transparent) adhesive.
The said layers may be of glass, mineral crystal (e.g.
coloured or colourless sapphire crystal) rigid plastics material, or of any other transparent or translucent material as is conventionally used in covering the face of analogue watches.
Preferably the said facet is the so-called "table" of the or each gemstone. The adhesive may comprise acetoxysilane.
Preferably the gemstone or at least one of the gemstones is a full-cut diamond.
Preferably the item of jewellery is a watch having a timepiece or movement surrounded by inner and outer bezels, the gemstone(s) being disposed in between the two bezels.
Optionally, the time-piece may be to provide an analogue time indication, the gemstones providing index marks there for.
Preferably the said layers are bonded to the bezels by an adhesive, e.g. an adhesive comprising hydroxpropyl methactrylate.
By way of non-limiting example, one embodiment of this invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view through an analogue watch constituting a jewellery article embodying this invention, and Figure 2 is a partial plan view of the watch of Fig 1.
The illustrated analogue watch 10 comprises a time-piece or watch movement 12 having minute and hours hands 14,15 located within a casing 16. The casing is provided with a transparent cover disc 18 of plastics material of the socalled "crystal" type. Two annular discs 21, 22 of similar "crystal" type transparent plastics material are held between an outer bezel 20 and an inner bezel provided by the outer surface of the perimeter wall of casing 16. The inner and outer bezels are rebated adjacent their upper and lower edges to provide seatings for the edges of the discs 18, 21 and 22. These discs are adhesively bonded to the bezels, e.g. by transparent adhesive comprising hydroxypropyl methacrylate and acrylic acid.
Twelve full-cut polished diamonds 24 are equi-angularly spaced about the patch in between the two similar discs 21, 22. The diamonds are mounted in the twelve hour-positions of the watch (to represent the latter's index marks) by an adhesive which bonds the so-called "table" facet 25 of each diamond 24 to the underside of the upper disc 21. The prefered adhesive employed comprises acetoxysilane and acetic acid.
It will be apparent that the diamonds 24 are mounted without the usual claws and can be viewed substantially in their entirety from all angles, both from above and below. Their beauty, lustre and brilliance can thus be manifest to the full.
It will be appreciated that polished gemstones other than diamonds can be employed, be they of the precious or the semi-precious variety. Indeed, a mixture of the various varieties may be used in the same jewellery article (which, of course, need not be a watch). It will also be appreciated that one or more of the discs 18, 21 and 22 can be of glass rather than of plastics material.
Other items of jewellery may be devised in accord with the present invention by those skilled in the art, and this invention is not to be deemed restricted to the particular embodiment described ahove with reference to the drawings.
