Abstract

In an assembled commutator, particularly of the type seen in GB 2128818 and GB 2198892, the commutator segments 2 contact a suppression element, such as a rubber resistor ring 11, as they are mounted on the base. The base may be in two parts 4, 6, the segment being preassembled on a cylindrical part 4 which is then introduced into the housing part 6 bearing the ring 11. <IMAGE>

Description

SUPPRESSION ELEMENT IN A COMMUTATOR The present invention relates to a suppression element in a commutator, particularly assembled commutators of the type described in our published British patent applications, specifications Nos.2128818 and 2198892.
A first aspect of the invention provides an assembled commutator comprising a base and a plurality of commutator segnents mounted on the base, each segment having a brush contacting portion on which a brush of an electric motor may bear, and a terminal portion for connection to an armature winding of a said electric motor, wherein electrical suppression means is mounted on the base, the suppression means being located so that the segments are brought into contact with the element as they are mounted on the base.
A second aspect of the invention provides an assembled commutator comprising a base and a plurality of commutator segments mounted on the base, each segment comprising a brush contacting portion on which a brush of an electric motor may bear, and a terminal portion for connection to an armature winding of a said electric motor, each said terminal portion having a slot therein for straddling and gripping a connector portion of said armature winding, said base comprise a housing part having a plurality of housings for receiving said terminal portions, wherein electrical suppression means is mounted in said housings, said suppression means being positioned in said housings so that said terminal portions make electrical contact with the suppression means as they are inserted in the housings.
The base may be in two separate part: a first part supporting the terminals and a second part supporting the brush contacting portions. The segments may be pre-assembled onto the second part, which is then brought together with the first part.
Preferably the suppression means is resilient and is deformed slightly by the terminal portions.
The suppression means may be a resistor ring, for example of rubber or plastics material.
Other preferred features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying claims.
The single figure of drawings shows a cross-section through an assembled commutator of the type described in published patent specification No.2128818.
In the drawing, a 5-bar commutator comprises a plastics base 1 supporting a plurality of commutator segments 2.
The base 1 comprises a housing part 3 and a second, cylindrical, part 4, which may be separately formed. The segments 2 each comprise a brush contacting portion 5 on the cylindrical part 4 and a terminal 6. Each terminal 6 has a slot 7 which straddles and grips a connector part 8 of an armature winding wire which is wound past a boss 9 in a respective housing 10 which receives the terminal 6.
Positioned in the housing is a rubber resistor ring 11 which extends about the base radially inward of the bosses 9. As the segments 2 are pushed onto the base the terminals 6 enter the housings 10 and contact the ring 11, slightly deforming it to ensure good electrical contact.
The segments 2 are held in place by barbs 12 on the terminals 6 which grip the housing wall and barbs 13 on tongues 14 received in recesses 15 in the opposite end 16 of the base.
The base 1 may, for example, be in two parts, separated along the dotted line 13 , the segments being pre-assembled onto the cylindrical part 4. Also the slots 7 may face out of the housings 10, the wire being drawn into the slots 7. The slots 7 may be arranged to displace insulation on the wire.
Various modifications may be made to the described embodiment and it is desired to include all such modifications as fall within the scope of the accompanying claims.
