Abstract

An attachment made of a combination of ridged polythene screws and nuts and flexible polythene tubing enables an ostomy bag to be continually discharged into a suitable container. The container is changeable if required without the need to remove the attachment from the ostomy bag, whilst the attachment can be removed from the ostomy bag to enable the ostomy bag to be used in the normal way. This appliance can be used for both Hospital and home use. <IMAGE>

Description

M.E.G. OSTOMY ATTACHbIENT This invention relates to a portable extension to open ended ostomy bags.
Plastic material bags for the collection of excreated body wastes are attached by various methods to the human body after the formation of a storma by a Surgeon during operations for various bowel diseases.
These bags, in the main, have an open end to facilitate the emptying of the collected fluid, tie discharge end is sealed off curing the collection period with a form of clip which is removed to enable emptying to take place. The clip is then returned to seal the openable end to enable the bag to be used for collection of the waste fluid again. Dependant on the type of disease the frequency of emptying the bag varies in time and duration of the seal attachment seal to the body.
The sealing to the human body can vary from a matter of hours to one or two days depending on one of two factors. The amount of flatulence produced by the person to whom the bag is attached and to the volume of discharge a person emits.
This invention is designed to enable the ostomy bag user to connect a larger container to an existing bag, previcusly attached to a person and thus prolong the periods of time of emptying the collection reseptical.
The attachment consists of a plastic connection between the open exit of the ostomy bag and a plastic/polythene flexible tube of suitable length, which is attached via a screw connector to a plastic/polythene container.
This attachment also has the advantage of being detachable, as required from the storma bag, which can be closed at the discharge end using the normal method and after which the storma bag can be used the normal way by the Ileostomist or Colostomist.
The flexible polythene tube and the connecting device and large discharge container form a seal when fastened with "fingertight" pressure.
The large container is marked with pre-determined spaces to enable volumetric measurement to be obtained for hospital use and can be sealed by a screw cap to ensure no further contamination can take place prior to analysis if required.
FIG. 1 Shows the attachment fitted to an ostomy bag also a sectional view of the attachment.
