Abstract

The tool comprises an adjustable clamp 4 hinged to a body 5 which forms a support for the tube. A hardened wheel 2 or blade 7 is mounted askew within the clamp 4 so that rotation of the tool while clamped to the tube impresses a helical track in the tube. A screw adjustment 3 sets the depth of the hardened blade or wheel which is removable for replacement. <IMAGE>

Description

A HAND TOOL FO-t THE MANIPULATION OF OF TUBIr. & This invention relates to a hand tool to enable the manipulation and forming of malleable pipes and tubes.
Copper and other malleable tubing is commonly bent to different angles or combinations of angles to avoid obstacles, for example in domestic plumbing situations.
The equipment normally used to achieve these bends is bulky and relatively expensive and is limited in the degree of the angles and the complexity of the combination of angles that can be achieved.
As a result, the fitter is frequently required to use elbows or other couplings to achieve the desired pattern of pipe run.
According to the present invention there is provided a hand tool which clamps to the tube and when rotated about the tube will score or impress a thread-like groove into the surface of the tube; this will make the tubing sufficiently malleable to be hand bent and formed to any angle or profile required.
Tubing thus treated will provide a safety expansion area to safeguard pipe from rupturing when frozen. Long lengths of tubing formed in this manner could replace plastic in situations where heat, rodents or contour present problems.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a plan view; Figure 2 shows a side elevation; Figure 3 shows alternative pin replacing roller.
Referring to the drawing, the invention comprises a hinged tool which may be closed and clamped around a section of tubing (detail 1).
When the tool is rotated, the forming wheel 2 or pin 7 indents a spiralled track in the outer wall of the tube of sufficient pitch and depth to enable the tube to be subsequently bent and formed by hand without the walls of the tube splitting or collapsing, and without the tube pinching.
The forming wheel or pin will be manufactured of hardened and tempered steel and pre-set to a specific angle so that as the tool is rotated about the tube a helical track is scored or indented.
The clamp screw (detail 3) is adjustable so that the tool can be clamped to different diameters of tube. The forming wheel 2 or pin 7 is adjustable so that in operation it is possible to vary the depth of the indent channelled into the tubing.

Claims (4)

1. A hand tool comprising a body which clamps over a pipe or tube and which incorporates a hardened wheel or pin which on rotation impresses a helical track into the outer wall of the pipe or tube.
2. A hand tool as claimed in claim 1 which is adjustable to fit over various diameters of pipe or tube.
3. A hand tool as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 which is adjustable to vary the depth of indent into the wall of the pipe or tube.
4. A hand tool as claimed in claim 1 in which the hardened pin or wheel is removable to enable replacement.
