Abstract

A length of continuous fan-folded material is printed with one language on one face of the material and a second language on the other face. The pages are printed out of phase and set transversely to the length, which begins and ends with a flyleaf. A removable fastener (3) (e.g. a known form of paper clip) is provided that can be attached to either edge of the stack of fan-folded material. By moving the fastener from one edge to the other, the book changes from a text written and bound according to the conventions of one language to a book written and bound according to the traditions of the other. By slitting along the folds, turning over alternate leaves and rebinding, the same material may be presented as a dual language book with facing texts. <IMAGE>

Description

FAN-FOLDED DUAL LANGUAGE BOOK This invention relates to the printing and binding of dual language publications.
Languages differ in the conventions governing the way individual pages are gathered together to form a book. For example, with publications written in English, it is traditional to bind the pages to a spine situated on the left hand side of the front cover. Successive pages are revealed by turning the leaves of the book anticlockwise about this spine or hinge. In Persian, the reverse convention 25 adopted and a book is opened by turning the pages clockwise about a spine situated on the right hand side of the front cover. In consequence. a publication that contains a text written in a pair of languages that enjoy opposite conventions, such as English and Persian, has had to compromise one of the two conventions, until now.
According to the present invention there is provided a length of continuous material that is both capable of being folded and of bearing the symbols of a language, such as paper. The text is written in one language on one face of the material and on the reverse face in the other language.
A language may consist of any set of letters, marks, symbols or illustrations, or families of such sets whose members all conform to the same binding convention. Pages are printed transversely to the length of the continuous material, which begins and ends with a flyleaf. The continuous material is folded back and forth, each fold in the opposite direction to the previous and advancing along its length, to create a stack of the said material folded in the fashion of a fan.
A removable edge fastener is provided that can be attached to either edge of the fan-folded stack and binds all the folds on one side of the stack together to create a spine.
By removing the fastener from one edge and attaching it to the other, the spine shifts position and the binding convention is reversed revealing a book written in the other language.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a length of continuous fan-folded paper.
Figure 2 indicates the stack of fan-folded paper with the removable edge fastener attached to the left hand side of the stack.
Figure 3 indicates the same fan-folded stack with the removable edge fastener attached to the right hand side.
Figure 4 shows the stack having been cut into individual leaves, rearranged and rebound.
A text is printed on both sides of a continuous length of fanfolded paper Fig 1, as might be generated by an industrial laser printer. English is printed on one side 1 of the continuous paper and on the other side Z of the paper, Persian is printed. The printed pages are laid out transversely, so that a page lies top to bottom across the width of the paper. Furthermore, the two versions are printed one page out of phase so that, for example, page 4 of the English text appears on the reverse face of the paper bearing page 5 of the Persian text. A removable edge fastener 3, such as a crocodile clip, is attached to the left hand side of the fan, Fig 2. The book then opens anticlockwise in the traditional english manner.By turning over the pages, only one face of the continuous material will ever be revealed and so the book will appear to be written solely in English. When the edge fastener is removed and attached to the right hand side, Fig 3, the book turns into a conventionally bound Persian book and the only language to apppear to the readers eye will be Persian.
Finally, if the edge fastener is removed and the continuous paper slit along each fold into separate sheets with alternate leaves turned over, then this stack of loose sheets of paper can be rebound by reapplying the edge - fastener. The resulting book, Fig 4, will have reverted to the traditional form of facing-text publication and can be bound either in the English or Persian fashion according to which side of the stack the edge fastener is applied. In either case, when the book is opened into double page spreads, page N of the English version of the text will face page N of the Persian version.

Claims (8)

1. A fan-folded dual language book comprising a length of continuous material that is both capable of being folded and of bearing the symbols of a language, such as paper.
2. A fan-folded dual language book as claimed in Claim 1 where the pages of the two versions of the text are printed out of phase with each other.
3. A fan-folded dual language book as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein a text is printed with a phase difference of one between the two versions of the text, so that page N of the text in one language is found on the reverse face of the material bearing page N+1 of the text in the other language.
4. A fan-folded dual language book as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 3 wherein the fan-folded material is cut along each fold into separate sheets, alternate leaves turned over, and the resulting stack rebound along one side with the removable edge fastener or some other means. The separate sheets may be rebound either with the pages turning anticlockwise about a hinge or spine situated on the left hand side of the front cover, or, with the pages turning clockwise about a hinge or spine situated on the right hand side of the front cover.
5. A fan-folded dual language book binding as claimed in any of the above Claims wherein each face of the material is printed with two or more languages all of which conform to the same binding convention. So for example, English, French and German may appear on one side, with Arabic, Persian and Japanese on the other.
6. A fan-folded dual language book as claimed in any of the above Claims wherein all the languages enjoy the same binding convention.
7. A fan-folded dual language book as claimed in any of the above. Claims where the substance of the text varies between the languages and may not be a translation, exact or otherwise.
8. A fan-folded dual language book substantially described herein with reference to Figures 1-4 of the accompanying drawing.
