Abstract

222,244. Logan, H. T. July 14, 1923. Pliers.-Pliers, particularly adapted for use in bending wire for making jewellery, comprise a pair of spring - pressed jaws which are closed by means of a loop engaging the jaws and adapted to be turned by a handle for this purpose. The jaws 2, 3 are formed integrally with a handle part 1 by bending up a piece of resilient steel rod of circular, square or D-shaped section. The closing-member is constructed by bending a piece of sheet metal on itself to constitute a handle portion 4 and an enlarged part having two rivets 5, 6 passing therethrough, and forming the loop through which the jaws 2, 3 pass. A notch is provided in the jaw in which the rivet 6 engages, to form a fulcrum for the handle 4, the rivet 5 exerting a cam action on the jaws to close them on turning the handle. When not in use, the jaws are placed in the reverse position between the pins 5, 6 and the handle part 1 slid partly into the handle part 4, this reverse position of the jaws causing less strain on the rivets 5, 6. The part 4 may consist of a lever with a slotted end constituting the loop.
