Abstract

A connector 10 (which may be moulded of plastics) has a first piece 11 with part 13 for receipt of an end 14 of an elongate member 15 and a second piece 12 with part 30 for receipt of an end 31 of a second elongate member 32. The parts 11, 12 are pivotable about abort 22. A rivet 9 holds member 15 and a bolt 22a extending through bores in wing elements 33, 34 enables a releasable grip on member 32 which can be adjusted about its axis. The other end of member 15 can be releasably received in a clamp 40 for adjustment about its axis. The member 32 may support a rest 42 for a fishing rod. The assembly can be adjusted by a seated angler. <IMAGE>

Description

COI;IfECTORS This invention relates to connectors.
According to this invention a connector comprises a first part adapted to receive an end of a first elongate member, a second part adapted to receive an end of a second elongate member the first part being pivoted to the second part for movement about an axis transverse to the elongate members, the second part having means for releasably gripping the second member to permit angular adjustment of the second member relative to the second part.
The means for releasably gripping the second member may be a bolt extending through spaced wing elements.
The first and second parts may be pivotally connected by a bolt and nut so that the parts can be releasably held in a desired relative position.
The first part may comprise means cooperable with the first elongate member to permit angular adjustment of the first member relative to the first part.
The adjustment of the first and second elongate members may be about the longitudinal axes of the elongate members.
The first and second parts may comprise confronting flat surfaces transverse to the pivot axis.
An assembly may comprise a clamp spaced from the connector for releasably clamping the first elongate member so that the first elongate member can be rotated about its axis in the clamp.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side view of a connector; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one form of use, and Fig. 3 is a side view of part of Fig. 2 in one position.
Referring to Fig. 1, a connector 10, which may be moulded of plastics, is in two pieces 11, 12. Piece 11 comprises a hollow end part 13 for receiving an end 14 of an elongate member 15 and a tongue 16 extending from a closed end 17 having a flat medial surface 18 on one side and a boss 19 on the other, a strengthening rib 20 being provided between the end 17 and the boss 19.
A rivet 9 extends through the side wall 7 of part 13 to secure the end 14 in the hollow part 13.
The piece 12 includes a tongue and boss 16a, 19a similar to tongue and boss 16, 19 arranged with flat faces 18, 18a in contact with an internally and externally serrated washer 6 having an annular row of apertures for engaging the plastics material. A bolt 22 having head 23 in boss 19a extends through aligned bores in the parts 16, 19 and 16a, 19a and is received in a threaded nut 21 in an operating knob 8. Flat wear plates 5 e.g. of metal are preferably located in recesses in surfaces 18, 18a. The plates 5 are of non-circular cross-section to resist rotation.
The piece 12 includes hollow part 30 for receiving an end 31 of elongate member 32 and extending laterally from an axial extension of part of part 30 are two generally parallel wing elements 33, 34 having aligned bores spaced laterally of part 30. Wing 33 receives the head 23a of a bolt 22a extending through the bores and received in a nut 21a in an operating knob 8a. Tightening of bolt 22a urges the wings 33, 34 towards each other to grip the elongate member 32 in the region of the extension and the wings.
The other end of member 15 is adjustably rotatably received itl a clamp 40 Fig. 2. Thus the member 15 can be rotated 3600 in the clamp 40 about the axis of member 15; by releasing the grip of bolt 22 by rotating head 8 the parts 11 12 can be adjusted in relative angular position through 1800 about the axis of bolt 22, as shown schematically in full and dotted lines in Fig. 3; and by slightly releasing the grip of bolt 22a by rotating head 8a the member 32 can be rotated up to 3600 in the part 30 to a new relative angular position and the grip then re-applied.
One form of use for fishing is shown in Fig. 2 in which member 32 has a hollow internally threaded outer end 41 which receives rod rest 42. By adjustment of rod 15 in clamp 40 and adjustment of bolts 22, 22a the vertical, horizontal and angular position of the rod rest can be adjusted to a desired extent, and tie adjustment can be performed by a user, sitting adjacent clamp 40, without rising from his seat.
By adjustment using the clamp and connector the rest 42 can be positioned at any selected position in a hemisphere and orientated for convenient receipt of the rod.
The system is not restricted to use in fishing.
