Description

1 2220164 EQUIPMENT FOR EXTRUSION OF LAMINATED RIBBONS OF
THERMOPLASTICISED SYNTHETIC MATERIALS The invention relates to equipment for the extrusion of a laminated ribbon of thermoplasticised synthetic materialss, having an extruder and at least one co-extruderf, an entry blockr a co-extrusion block and an exit nozzle tools, in which device the entry block has entry channels and the coextrusion block has a lamination channel together with control channels feeding into the lamination channel and control members for the various streams of thermoplasticised material, the exit nozzle tool being connected to the lamination channel and formed as a single-channel tool. The lamination channel gathers the various materical streams into a composite laminar system, which is formed by the exit nozzle tool into a single laminated material stream and extruded as a ribbon.
In the context of the invention, the term "ribbon" embraces solid and hollow prof ile sections, including tubes, and also slabs and foils.
In known equipment of this type, the entry block is connected directly to the co-extrusion block. Consequently, the laminar stream system and the laminated ribbon consist of laminae prescribed in both sequence and number. The entire equipment is designed to produce this single sequence of laminae. In order to alter the sequence, costly modifications are required and seriously lengthy stoppages must be accepted.
The object of the invention is to modify and improve equipment of the type initially described, in such a manner that the sequence and number of the laminae in the extruded ribbon can be altered by simple means without involving seriously lengthy stoppages.
According to the present invention,, a distribution block is interchangeably interposed between the entry block and the co-extrusion blocki, the distribution block in use is one of a set of interchangeable distribution blocks,, and each i ndiv idual di st r i but i on bl ock conta i ns f eed ch annel s registering with the entry channels and distribution channels registering with the control channels, the connections between the feed channels and the distribution chanriels differing from one distribution block to another distribution block, thereby enabling ribbons with different lamination patterns to be produced.
Preferably, the di stri bution blocks are interchangeably mounted in a distribution block housing. it is self-evident that to avoid temperature disturbances the interchangeable distribution blocks can be preheated before insertion in the equipment or the distribution block housing thereof.
The distribution blocks themselves can be assembled from a plurality of plates having channel-forming bores. More particularlyr an arrangement can be adopted whereby individual plates can be interchanged between different distributor blocks so that distribution blocks having different distribution channels can be assembled together. They can be interchanged as individuals or in groups#, for example in pairs. With distribution blocks of this design, individual plates can f orm parts of all the distribution blocks and be used as required in different distribution blocks.
The construction of an embodiment of the inventiony its mode of functioning and the accruing advantages will now be described, purely by way of exampler with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Figure 1 is a schematic view in pespective of equipment in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 shows a set of differing distribution blocks f or the equipment shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an exploded view of a distribution block assembled from a plurality of plates.
The equipment shown in Figure 1 is intended for the extrusion of a laminated ribbon 1 of thermoplasticised synthetic materials. Its basic construction comprises an extruder 2 and two co-extruders 3, an entry block 4j, a coextrusion block 5 and an exit nozzle tool 6. The entry block has entry channels 7. The co-extrusion block 5 has a lamination channel 8 together with control channels 9 feeding into the lamination channel 8 and control members 10 for the various streams of thermoplasticised material. The exit nozzle tool 6 is connected to the lamination channel P and is formed as a single-channel tool,, the connection being made through an elbow connector 11.
Between the entry block 4 and the co-extrusion block 5 there is interposed a distribution block 12. It is interchangeably interposed. The distribution block 12 in use is one of a set of numerous interchangeable distribution blocks distinguished in Figure 2 by the letters a,, b and c.
Each individual distribution block 12 contains feed channels 13 registering with the entry channels 7 and distribution channels 14 registering with the control channels 9, the connections between the feed channels 13 and the distribution channels differing as between examples a,, b and cr and therefore forming different lamination patterns in the ribbon 1.
The equipment of Figure 1 may be used f or the production of laminated plastics foils by the co-extrusion method. The ribbon 1 is a f ive-ply plastics foil. The laminae have been drawn with thick lines in Figure 1, for cl ari ty. In this case, the distribution block 12 shown in Figure 2a has been mounted in the distribution block housing 15. One could equally well select either of the other distribution blocks 12 shown in Figures 2b and 2c. Referring to Figure 2a, the distribution block in use has three feed channels 13 and f ive distribution channels 14. The coextrusion block 5 has five control channels 9, four of which are fitted with control members 10 in the form of sliders. Figure 2b shows a distribution block 12 having only two feed channels 13 and three distribution channels 14,, so that when it is used in equipment in accordance with the invention it will only produce a three-ply ribbon 1. In this caser only one of the coextruders 3 is connected up and/or used. The distribution block 12 shown in Figure 2c is like that shown in Figure 2a, except that the lamination sequence has been chan ge d. The distribution blocks 12 are all interchangeable. Figure 2a also shows that the distribution blocks 12 can be assembled from plates 16. Details of the assembly of distribution blocks 12 from a plurality of plates 16 are shown in Figures 3a to 3e. The plates 16 can be stacked to form a distribution block 12,, and mounted for example in a suitable housing not shown. They can also be paired with other plates,, not shown. to form a different distribution block.
