Description

FRONT FLANGE OF THE TUB OF A CLOTHES WASHING MACHINE The invention relates to a front flange of the tub of a clothes washing machine, which is shaped in such a way as to permit simple and effective connection thereof to the loading opening of the machine by way of a conventional flexible bellows.
Clothes washing machines are known in which the washing tub is formed by a metal body which is drawn in such a way as to form the cylindrical portion and the end wall of the tub, and a front metal flange provided with a central access opening, the front flange being provided with a circular edge which is squeezed by a clamping ring, with the interposition of a seal, against the corresponding circular edges of said cylindrical body and a flange which is embedded in the concrete of the ballast of the machine.
In turn the access opening of the tub is connected to the corresponding loading opening which is provided in the front wall of the casing of the machine by way of flexible rubber bellows provided with ends which are shaped in such a way as to fit to the corresponding circular edges of the access opening and the loading opening.
In particular the flexible bellows, at its end which is connected to the access opening of the tub, is further provided with a circular wall which partially extends into the opening and which is disposed at a small spacing from the corresponding front circular edge of the drum, said circular wall being such as to prevent the laundry from possibly being able to escape from the drum, thus passing into the interior of the tub, during the rotary movement of the drum.
However, in practice it has been found that, whenever the laundry is irregularly distributed within the drum, the compression effect applied thereby against the circular wall which is made of elastic material can give rise to displacement of the wall with respect to the oppositely disposed circular edge of the drum, with the result that a gap is formed, in which the laundry can become entangled and possibly be drawn into the interior of the tub.
The aim of the present invention is to eliminate the described disadvantage in a clothes washing machine in a simple and reliable fashion, using a front flange on the tub which is shaped in such a way as to avoid the formation of gaps in which the laundry can become entangled, also providing for an effective connection to the flange of the associated end of the flexible bellows.
According to the present invention a washing tub for a clothes washing machine is provided, the washing tub having a front flange and being formed by a drawn metal body and constituting the peripheral portion and the bottom of the tub, the drawn body being connected to said flange by means of at least one clamping ring with the interposition of a seal and having at least one further flange embedded in the material of a ballast weight, said front flange being provided with a circular edge delimiting the access opening of said tub and being connectable by way of a flexible bellows to the correponding circular edge of the loading opening provided in the casing of the machine, the front flange being provided with a circular annular portion which is disposed such as partially to extend into said access opening spaced a small distance from the corresponding opening provided in the drum of the machine, said circular portion being provided with a plurality of through holes disposed in a circular array and capable of permitting discharge into the tub of the water collected in the folds of the flexible bellows.
The features of the invention will be more clearly apparent from the following description given solely by way of non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a portion of a clothes washing machine incorporating the front flange of the tub according to the invention and, Figure 2 is a front view of the flange according to the invention.
Referring to figure 1, shown therein is a portion of a clothes washing machine comprising a washing tub 3 which is supported in per se known manner within a casing 4 of the machine, and comprising a rotary drum 5 disposed within the tub 3 and provided with a circular front edge 6 delimiting the opening 7 for access to the interior of said drum.
In turn the washing tub 3 is formed by a metal body 8 drawn in such a way as to form an end wall (not shown) and a peripheral portion 9 of cylindrical shape, and a front metal flange 10 capable of being fitted against the drawn body 8, as will be described hereinafter.
For that purpose the front flange 10 is drawn in such a way as to have a peripheral circular edge 11 which is squeezed by a clamping ring 12 against a corresponding circular edge 13 of the body 8 of the tub, with the interposition of a seal 14, and also against a further circular edge 15 of a supplementary flange 16 which is embedded in the concrete of a ballast weight 17 acting as a counter-weight to damp the oscillations of the tub-drum unit during operation of the machine.
The front flange 10 is also shaped in such a way as to constitute a circular edge 18 delimiting the access opening 19 of the tub, the opening being disposed at a position corresponding to the position of the opening 7 in the drum, while the circular edge is produced by bending over the plate portion of the flange and then curling same by means of per se known working methods and equipment, in such a way as to form an elongate portion 20 of circular annular shape, extending from the circular edge 18 partially into the access opening 19 and terminating with a further rounded circular edge 21.
In that way the circular edge 18 of the flange 10 can be connected to the corresponding bent-over circular edge 22 of the loading opening 23 which is provided in the casing 4 and which can be closed by a door 24 hingedly mounted on the casing, by way of a flexible bellows 25 of rubber, the ends of which are connected against the respectively circular edges 18 and 22 of the flange and the loading opening.
In turn the elongate circular portion 20 of the front flange 10 is disposed at a small spacing from the circular edge 6 of the access opening 7 of the drum in such a way that no gap into which the laundry could possibly become entangled, with the consequent risk of damaging same, during the rotary movement of the drum 5, is formed between said edge 6 and the corresponding rounded edge 21 of the circular portion 20.
That means that in this case the elongate portion 20 of the flange 10, by virtue of its rigid construction, cannot be displaced as described hereinbefore by the compression effect applied by the laundry against said portion, whenever the laundry is irregularly distributed within the drum.
Consequently the presence of the elongate portion 20 reliably eliminates any risk of damage to the laundry for the above indicated reasons.
As can be seen from figure 2 moreover the front flange 10 is provided with a plurality of radial reinforcing ribs 26 and also through holes 27 which are disposed in regularly distributed configuration in a circular direction in the flange. The purpose of the through holes is to permit discharge into the tub of the water which has collected and remained in the folds 28 of the flexible bellows 25 after the drain phases have been carried out at the end of the washing and rinsing cycles of the machine.
