Abstract

A water based wood staining composition comprises a water soluble acrylic resin and a pigment. The composition may optionally include a biocide, bleaching agent, wetting agent and/or film-forming binder.

Description

WOOD STAINING COMPOSITION The present invention relates to a composition for staining wood.
Such compositions are already known but are frequently based on organic solvents which render the compositions expensive as well, possibly, as injurious to the health of the person applying the composition.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an aqueous based composition for staining wood.
According to the present invention there is provided a water based wood staining composition comprising a water soluble acrylic resin, a pigment, and said water base.
Preferably also the composition contains biocidal and/or acticidal ingredients such that the composition also has a preservative action.
Preferably also the composition additionally comprises a wetting agent and/or a film forming bonding agent.
A preferred composition in accordance with the invention comprises the components listed below in the ranges specified.
Water Soluble Acrylic Resin 20-40% (e.g. about 30%) Biocide 3-8% (e.g. about 5%) Acticide 3-8% (e.g. about 5%) Bonding Agent 5-15% (e.g. about 10%) Pigment 20-40% (e.g. about 30%) Wetting Agent 3-8% (e.g. about 5%) Preferably, the acrylic resin is Werley Cryl made by Cole Polymers Ltd.
Preferably, the bonding agent is Vinamul Resin Bond Emulsion (made by Vinamul). This chemical bonds the pigment to the timber and seals the timber against weathering.
The pigment may be conventional. Suitable examples are pigments made by Kenroy Dispensation.
A suitable example of wetting agent is EMPICOL.
Made by Albright & Wilson.
Examples of suitable biocides and acticides which may be used are acticides made by Thor Chemicals. This is mainly a bleach or a chlorine formula.
