Abstract
A security device to be fitted to a door (or window) comprises an elongate part (3) of a length generally equal to the width of a door (1), which part may suitably be in the form of a grille, the ends (3a, 3b) of which are designed to fit against the opposite parts (2a, 2b) of the door frame (2), at least one (3b) of which ends is fitted with a lock (5), preferably a deadlock, which will be received in the door post (2b). Thus, in use, the device is fitted to the door by screws or other fastenings (4) and when his desired to lock the door one or both ends of the device will be locked into the door frame. Without unlocking the device from the door frame, the door cannot be opened without effectively destroying the door frame. <IMAGE>
Description
Security Device
This invention relates to a security device, and in particular to a security device to be fitted to a door or window.
Prevention of burglary, in particular of domestic premises, is an increasing problem. and the present invention is concerned with providing an effective but relatively cheap method of securing a door against breaking and entering. While a door can be secured by conventional locks, or on the other hand by a complex and expensive locking system, the present invention provides a security device intermediate these two known types of locking means, which is both effective in preventing a door being broken open and in being relatively cheap to produce and easy to fit to a conventional door.
The invention provides a security device, to be fitted to a door (or window) and which is designed to be fixed or otherwise fitted to the frame of the door, whereby when the device is locked into the frame the door cannot be opened.
While the security device of the invention is particularly intended to be fitted to a door, it could equally well be fitted to a window: the following description will describe the device of the invention in the context of being fitted to a door. The device could be used for protecting either domestic or business premises.
The device of the invention preferably comprises an elongate part of a length generally equal to the width of a door, which part may suitably be in the form of a grille, the ends of which are designed to fit against the opposite posts of the door frame, at least one of which ends is fitted with a lock, preferably a deadlock, which will be received in the door post. Thus, in use, the device is screwed or otherwise fitted to the door and when it is desired to lock the door one or both ends of the device will be locked into the door frame.
Without unlocking the device from the door frame, the door cannot be opened without effectively destroying the door frame.
The security device of the invention will normally be fitted to the outside of a door, but could equally be fitted to the inside.
The elongate part of the device which is fitted to the door itself can be made telescopic so that it is adapted to fit a door of any size.
The locks provided at the ends of the elongate part of the device can be received in specially designed posts to be fitted to the door frame, or may be received directly into the door frame.
The device of the invention can be fitted to an existing door quickly and relatively cheaply by a locksmith or even an unskilled person.
The device can be arranged to be locked from the side of the door on which it is fitted (usually the outside) or from the other side (inside).
The invention will be further described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing1 which shows a door to the outside of which is fitted a security device according to the invention.
The drawing shows a door 1 retained in a door frame 2 having side posts 2a and 2b. A security device according to the invention comprises an elongate part 3, which is suitably in the form of a grille of boxed steel. The part 3 is fixed to the door 1 by screws or other fastenings 4. One end 3a of the part 3 is designed to grip against the door post 2a, while the other end 3b is provided with a deadlock 5 adapted to be received in a special receiving post 6 fitted to the other door post 2b. The door 1 also has a conventional lock 7.
When it is desired to secure the door 1 with the device of the invention, the end 3b of the part 3 is fixed by the lock 5 to the door post 2b via the post 6. Thus if any attempt is made to break open the door, the force applied is effectively transmitted to the door frame, so that the door cannot be opened with doing considerable damage to the door and/or the door frame.
Claims (4)
1. A security device, to be fitted to a door or window frame, which comprises an elongate part of a length generally equal to the width of the door or window frame, the ends of which are designed to fit against opposite frame members of the said frame, at least one of which ends is fitted with a locking means which cooperates with said frame member; whereby when the device is fitted to the door or window and locked into the said frame the door or window cannot be opened.
2. A security device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said elongate part is telescopic.
3. A security device as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein a lock provided on the said elongate part is adapted to be received in a receiving post fitted to the said frame member.
4. A security device according to claim 1, substantially as herein described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawing.
