Abstract

A cat, dog, bird and/or insect repellent comprises a plurality of ingredients selected from denatonium benzoate, quassia extract, gentian, madda, gum acacia, griseofulvin, cochineal extract and/or synthetic cochineal, kerosene or gas oil, ethyl mercaptan, dementholised camphor oil, turpentine, marine oil and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol.

Description

REPELLENT The present invention relates to an improved repellent. Repellents have been widely used both in domestic use, as well as in agriculture and horticulture to repel animals such as cats or dogs and/or birds and/or insects. In the e case of agriculture or horticulture they have been widely used to protect crops, whereas in a more domestic environment they have been used usually to repel unwanted cats or dogs, for example, from straying onto a garden.
The present invention provides a repellent of improved efficacy which may be applied as a spray to a crop or to a garden or other area or object (for example a lamp post) to repel animals and/or birds and/or insects. The repellent also provides a means of repelling birds and animals from other materials by incorporation with them, thus preventing their ingestion causing damage to the birds and animals by poisoning.
The repellent may be provided in a concentrated form which may be made more dilute by mixing with a solvent such as water together with a surfactant.
A repellent according to the present invention contains some or all of the following constituents: Bitrex (Denatonium Benzoate) Quassia Extract Gentian Madda Gum Acacia Griseofulvin Polyvinyl Acetate Cochineal Extract (Natural) and/or synthetic cochineal Wetter such as Bondtex Kerosene/Gas Oil Ethyl Mercaptan Dementholised Camphor Oil Turpentine Marine (Fish) Oil 2.4.6 Trichlorophenol The repellent is mixed with water and may be sprayed onto a crop to repel animals, birds and insects or may be sprayed onto a garden for similar purposes or on to objects, for example, lamp posts, which can be damaged by dogs.
Each constituent will now be considered in further detail, together with typical proportions.
Bitrex (Denatonium Benzoate) comprises a bitter agent which prevents birds or insects eating the crops. It may be provided in proportion from 0.075 to 0.25 g/l, typically 0.125 g/l of undiluted repellent.
Quassia extract is a bitter agent, being a plant extract. It may be provided in proportion 10 to 40 ml/l, typically 25 ml/l of undiluted repellent.
Natural Gentian extract or synthetic gentian comprises a repellent and is provided as a powdered aqueous extract. It has a colour which is objectionable to many birds and therefore repels them.
It is provided in proportion 3 to 12 g/l, typically 7 g/l of undiluted repellent.
Madder is a bird repellent for much the same reason as gentian extract, that is it has a colour which repels them. It is provided in proportions 3 to.
12 g/l, typically 7 g/l of undiluted repellent.
Gum acacia, otherwise called gum arabic, is a repellent and also acts as a sticker to stick the repellent to whatever it is sprayed onto, for example, a crop. It is provided in proportions 3 to 12 g/l, typically 7 g/l of undiluted repellent.
Griseofulvin (C17H17C106) is a fungicide and promotes systemicity, that is it promotes the absorption of the other components into the plant on which it is sprayed. It is provided in a proportion of 1 to 5 g/l, typically 2.5 g/l.
Polyvinyl acetate is a surface adhesive which is useful for making the repellent adhere to crops or whatever it is applied to and is provided in a proportion of 2 to 10 ml/l, typically 5 ml/l of undiluted repellent.
Cochineal extract is provided in the form of an aqueous extract which is repellent particularly to birds. It provides a bitter taste to birds and also tends to colour the crop, being a bright red, in a way which is repellent to birds. It is in present in a proportion of 2 to 10 ml/l typically 5 ml/l of undiluted repellent.
Bontex is provided as a surfactant or wetter and comprises sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate. It helps to disolve the repellent in the water so that it may be sprayed and also helps the material to spread across the surface on which it is sprayed. It is provided in a proportion of 2 to 10 ml/l, typically 5 ml/l of undiluted repellent.
Kerosene or gas oil is provided which stabilises the volatile components and also provides a repellent odour. It is provided in proportion 10 ml/l to 100 ml/l, typically 40 ml/l of the undiluted repellent.
Ethyl mercaptan is provided as a repellent.
It is an extremely unpleasant smelly liquid which even in very small concentrations is extremely repellent to all animals and particularly to cats and dogs. It is provided in proportion of 0.01 to 0.10 ml/l, typically 0.04 ml/l of the undiluted repellent.
The Dementholised camphor oil is provided as a stabiliser for the ethyl mercaptan and -is provided in proportion of 0.01 to 0.1 ml/l, typically 0.06 ml/l of the undiluted repellent.
Natural turpentine is provided as a solvent for the ethyl mercaptan and for the dementholised camphor oil and is provided in proportion of 0.1 to 0.5 ml/l, typically 0.16 ml/l of the undilute repellent.
Marine (Fish) Oil is provided as a repellent in proportion of 10 to 50 ml/l, typically 32 ml/l of the undiluted repellent.
2.4.6. Trichlorophenol is provided as a repellent and is provided in proportion of 0.05 to 0.5 g/l, typically 0.113 g/l of the undiluted repellent.
The above percentages are given for the concentrated commercial material (as to be sold) which in use is disolved in water by the user. The proportions of water added to the concentrate are as follows 1 part concentrate 1 in 10 parts total (ie 9 parts water) for garden use. Concentrate may be incorporated in other materials at whatever concentration is necessary to achieve repellence.
Example An example of the repellent was prepared in the following manner. A concentrate was prepared by mixing 25 1 of Quassia Extract, 125 g Denatonium Benzoate, 7 kg of madda, 7 kg Gentian Extract, 7 kg of Gum Acacia, 2.5 kg Griseofulvin, 40 1 Kerosene, 5 1 Cochineal Extract, 5 1 synthetic Cochineal Colouring, 5 1 Polyvinyl Acetate, 32 1 Fish Oil, 40 ml Ethyl Mercaptan, 60 ml Dementholised Camphor Oil, 160 ml Turpentine, and 113.4 g 2.4.6. Trichorophenol and making the mixture up to 1000 1 by adding water. The concentrate was then diluted in 10,000 1 of water, and when sprayed on crops and gate posts was found to be effective in repelling animals, birds and insects.
