Abstract

An imitation facing brick 1 formed from compressed paper pulp and having two opposed major surfaces 2, 3 one of said opposed surfaces 2 having a pattern formed thereon and the other of said surfaces 3 being planar. A method of making an imitation facing brick 1 comprising the steps of compression paper pulp in a brick-shaped mould, said mould having a flat base, producing a pattern on at least the face of the pulp 2 remote from the base utilising a roller or a die whilst the pulp is still wet and allowing the moulded brick to dry. <IMAGE>

Description

DECORATIVE WRICK AND NETHOD OF EWCING SASE The present invention relates to an imitation brick which can be used for decorative purposes. More particularly, the present invention relates to an imitation brick formed from compressed paper pulp. Moreover, the present invention also relates to a method of making such an imitation brick.
Conventional bricks have been used, for many years, not only for functional purposes but also for decoration.
Thus, for example, many open fire places have decorative surrounds. These surrounds often include decorative or facing bricks. A conventionally sized house brick would obviously look out of place in such an environment.
Accordingly, conventional decorative or facing bricks are brick portions. Such portions may have the conventional length and width of a standard house brick but have a reduced thickness.
Such decorative or facing bricks do, however, suffer from certain disadvantages. Firstly, if they are provided by a brick manufacturer, they tend to be relatively costly. This is generally because the majority of the production of a brick works is in the form of full-sized bricks and special production runs must be effected to produce the decorative or facing bricks.
Alternatively, a craftsman could attempt to produce the facing bricks from conventional bricks. However, this is difficult to achieve due to the nature of the material from which the brick is formed, and it is exceptionally difficult for a craftsman to produce a number of identical facing bricks.
A further disadvantage of purchasing the facing bricks from a brick manufacturer is that such facing bricks tend to have a standard depth, a feature which is not always desirable. A further problem arises when one attempts to incorporate such a facing brick in, for example, a decorative fire surround. It will be appreciated that because the facing brick is a portion of a conventional brick, such facing brick will be relatively heavy. In order to be able to fix the facing brick to a backing surface such as a wall, a heavy duty adhesive must be utilised. Such heavy duty adhesives are relatively expensive.
Various other decorative materials are also known.
For example, polystyrene panels have been used for decorative purposes. However, although such panels are lightweight and can be readily cut to size, the appearance of such panels bears no resemblance to that of a facing brick.
Accordingly, the present invention seeks to provide an imitation decorative or facing brick which does not suffer from the above mentioned disadvantages. In particular, the present invention seeks to provide such an imitation brick which is cheaper to produce than conventional facing bricks, which can be easily cut to shape, which can be produced in various depths and which is easier to utilise.
According to the present invention there is provided an imitation facing brick formed from compressed paper pulp, the brick having two opposed major surfaces, one said opposed surface being provided with a pattern and the other of said opposed faces being planar. The imitation brick may be of any desired colour and may, if desired, have crushed brick dust applied to at least the patterned major surface to provide a more realistic appearance.
Also according to the present invention there is provided a method of making an imitation facing brick comprising the steps of compressing paper pulp in a brick-shaped mould, the mould having a flat base, producing a pattern on the face opposed to the base by utilising a roller or dye whilst the pulp is still wet and allowing the moulded brick to dry.
If desired, the entire brick thus produced, with the exception of the base thereof, may be coated with a suitable adhesive, such as a polyvinyl acetate adhesive.
Moreover, crushed or powdered brick dust may be applied to any of the adhesive coated surfaces.
An imitation brick in accordance with the present invention has numerous advantages. Firstly, if desired, it can be provided with the same face size as a conventional brick. In addition, the depth of the imitation brick can be varied simply by varying the depth of the mould. The imitation brick can also be cut using simple tools such as,for example a knife. Because the imitation brick is made of compressed paper pulp, it is relatively lightweight and can therefore be adhered to a wall using a relatively weak adhesive. In addition, the compressed paper provides greater thermal insulation than a conventional house brick. Finally, the imitation brick of the present invention is considerably cheaper than the conventional facing bricks.
The invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a plan view of an imitation brick in accordance with the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the brick shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, there is shown an imitation brick 1 made from compressed paper pulp in accordance with the present invention. The brick has an upper surface 2 provided with a pattern and a planar base surface 3. There is also shown a thin layer of adhesive 4 which is applied to all of the surfaces of the brick except for the base 3. Crushed or powdered brick dust 5 is sprinkled onto, for example, the patterned surface 2 of the brick so as to provide a more pleasing appearance. The base 3 is caused to adhere to a backing surface such as a wall by the provision of a suitable light duty adhesive such as, for example, wallpaper paste. The other surfaces of the brick apart from the patterned surface 2 and the base 3 may equally be coated with crushed or powdered brick dust or, if desired, may be adhered to further bricks located adjacent thereto. Since the imitation brick is made of compressed paper pulp, it is resilient.
This means that the brick can be adhered to an arcuate wall portion. This is obviously not possible using conventional facing bricks.
Finally, if desired, a further thin coating of the polyvinyl acetate adhesive may be applied to the surface or surfaces coated with the brick dust to avoid the possibility of the dust becoming detached from the artificial brick.
