Abstract

221,061. Cooch, H. July 31, 1923. Speed-maintaining systems.-A direct-current motor is automatically controlled for constant speed by taking off alternating current from tappings or from a coupled generator, and passing the alternating current through a periodic contact device so as to produce compensatory impulses in the field or armature of the motor or in the field of an auxiliary generator connected in the motor circuit. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the motor armature winding 1 is tapped so as to give alternating current to a transformer 5 the secondary of which is connected to a rated vibratory contact device 8, 9 and to a condenser 13 shunted across a resistance 10 in circuit with the motor field 2. Any departure from a set relation between the successive vibratory contacts and the alternating-current periods alters the effective value of the resistance 10, adjustments being made so that the alteration corrects the speed of the motor. The vibratory contact may be a double-pole reversing switch, or may be replaced by a rotary brush switch. Two or more motors may be simultaneously controlled so as to run synchronously.
