Description
Cooking Appliances
This invention relates to cooking appliances and relates more specifically to cooking appliances which are designed to be installed under a continuous kitchen worktop and between adjacent kitchen cabinets over which the continuous kitchen worktop extends.
Such appliances may take any convenient form and may, for example, consist of a single oven unit, a single oven/grill unit, a unit having separate oven and grill compartments or a unit having a main oven and a separate grill/second oven compartment.
Up to the present time such appliances have usually taken one of two forms. One form consists of a floor standing appliance which is slid under the continuous worktop, and between the kitchen cabinets, and the other form consists of an appliance which is slid-into the carcass of an existing kitchen cabinet and is supported on the bottom thereof just above the cabinet kick-board.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an alternative form of such cooking appliance.
According to the present invention there is provided a cooking appliance which is adapted to be suspended under a continuous kitchen worktop and directly between adjacent kitchen cabinets over which said continuous worktop extends, comprising suspension means from which said appliance is suspended which is adapted to be secured beneath said workop.
In one form of the invention the suspension means may be adapted to be secured to the underside of said worktop and/or to the adjacent kitchen cabinets, and in a preferred form of the invention will comprise a slide-rail assembly secured to each side of said appliance.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention will now be described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1, depicts a cooking appliance in accordance with the present invention installed under a continuous kitchen worktop and between adjacent kitchen cabinets, both of which are shown in partially cut-away form; and
Fig. 2, is a cross-sectional view depicting the slide-rail arrangement of Fig. 1.
The embodiment of the invention to be described takes the form of a gas cooking appliance which incorporates an oven compartment and a separate grill compartment. Whilst the present invention has particular application to such a cooking appliance, it should be appreciated that it may also be applicable to, for example, electric cooking appliances, which may be of conventional or microwave form, and may also be applicable to single compartment as well as multi-compartment appliances.
In Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings there is depicted a gas cooking appliance 1 comprising a main body 2 to the front of which is attached a lower oven door 3, which affords access to an oven compartment (not shown), and also an upper grill door 4, which affords access to a grill compartment (not shown). The grill compartment may also incorporate a second oven arrangement if required. The top surface 5 of the appliance 1 is provided towards the rear and across the width thereof with a flue outlet 6.
The appliance 1 is designed to be installed under a continuous kitchen worktop 7 and between adjacent kitchen cabinets, the left-hand side one of which is shown at 8 and only the left side panel of the right-hand one of which is shown at 9, over which cabinets the worktop 7 extends. The worktop 7 is provided with a cut-out 10 at a position corresponding to the flue outlet 6 and a decorative flue outlet cover 11 is provided which is inserted in the cut-out 10.
The appliance 1 is provided along the top of each of its sides with a slide-rail assembly, the right-hand one of which is shown at 12. As is shown more clearly in Fig. 2, the slide-rail assembly 12 comprises an inverted "U" section part 13, an extended arm of which is secured to the main body 2 of the appliance 1 by means of suitable fastenings, one of which is shown at 14, and a supporting part 15 which is secured to the underside of the worktop 7 by means of suitable fastenings, one of which is shown at 16, and also to the side panel 9 by means of suitable fastenings, one of which is shown at 17. It should be appreciated that in some applications it may not be necessary to secure the part 15 of the slide-rail assembly 12 to both the underside of the worktop 7 and to the side panel 9, and one or other of the fastenings 16 and 17 may be dispensed with.
The parts 13 and 15 of the slide-rail assembly 12 co-operate together to suspend the appliance 1 beneath the worktop 7 such that it may be slid in and out for installation and maintenance purposes.
In order to give the appliance 1 a "fitted" appearance, it may be arranged that the kick-board 18 of the adjacent kitchen cabinets is extended underneath the appliance 1, thereby to afford a continuous effect.
The arrangement described is advantageous in that it is applicable to a worktop of any thickness, and if necessary a "filler" piece may be inserted under the appliance 1 to complete the "fitted" appearance. In some installations it may also be arranged that the worktop 7 is provided with a suitable cut-out immediately above the appliance 1 for receiving a hob unit.
