Abstract

The brush gear comprises two brush arms (10, 11) and a brush arm support (12). Each arm (10, 11) comprises two electrically conductive strips forming, respectively, a terminal part (14) and a more resilient brush supporting part (15). The terminal part comprises two portions (14a and 14b) extending at an acute angle with respect to one another. Only the portion (14a) of each terminal part is supported by the support (12) and the brush supporting part (15) is secured to the portion (14b) of the terminal part (14) on the side thereof distal from the portion (14a). In use the brush supporting part (15) is urged against the free edge of the portion (14b) of the terminal part (14) when a brush (18) supported by the brush supporting part is in contact with a commutator. <IMAGE>

Description

Brush gear for an electric motor This invention relates to brush gear for an electric motor and to an electric motor equipped with such brush gear.
According to the present invention there is provided brush gear for an electric motor, comprising a brush arm and means supporting the brush arm, the brush arm comprising two electrically conductive strips forming, respectively, a terminal part and a more resilient brush supporting part, the terminal part comprising first and second portions extending at an acute angle with respect to one another, wherein only the first portion of the terminal part is supported by the brush arm supporting means, and wherein the brush supporting part of the brush arm is secured to the second portion of the terminal part on the side thereof distal from the first portion, the arrangement being such that in use the brush supporting part is urged against the free edge of the second portion of the terminal part when a brush supported by the brush supporting part is in contact with a commutator.
Preferably, the first portion of the terminal part has a dimple formed therein and the dimpled region of the first portion of the terminal part is located in a groove in the brush arm supporting means.
Conveniently, the first portion of the terminal part has a transversely extending projection which is located in an aperture in the brush arm supporting means and the free end of the projection is splayed out to hold the projection captive in said aperture.
Preferably, the second portion of the terminal part and the brush supporting part are secured together by one or more upset rivets.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of brush gear according to the present invention, and Figure 2 is an exploded sectional view of part of the brush gear of Figure 1, taken along line II-II.
Referring to the drawing, the brush gear shown therein comprises two brush arms 10 and 11 and a brush arm support 12 in the form of an end cap, typically of nylon, which closes the end of a drawn can-like casing of a p.m.d.c. motor.
Each brush arm 10, 11 comprises a terminal part 14 of, for example, brass and a more resilient brush supporting part 15 of, for example, beryllium copper. The terminal part 14 has two portions 14a and 14b extending at an acute angle ct~ with respect to one another. The brush supporting part 15 is secured to the portion 14b of the terminal part 14 on the side thereof distal from the portion 14a by one or more upset rivets 16 and, preferably, in addition by a projection 17 which extends from one side of the portion 14b and which is bent over and crimped about the brush supporting part 15. A carbon brush 18 is supported by the free end of part 15 in conventional manner.
When the brush 18 is in contact with a commutator (not shown) the part 15 is urged against the free edge of the portion 14b of the terminal part 14 which edge defines a fixed fulcrum for the part 15 with respect to the part 14.
The portions 14a of the two brush arms 10 and 11 are supported by the support 12 in longitudinal alignment with one another. Each portion 14a has a dimple 19 formed therein and the dimpled region of each portion 14a is located in a respective groove 20 in the support 12. In addition, in order to firmly secure the brush arms relative to the support 12, each portion 14a has a transversely extending projection 21 which is located in an aperture 22 in the support 12 and which has a bifurcated free end 23 which is splayed out after insertion into the aperture 22 to hold the projection 21 captive in the aperture 22.
As only the portions 14a are trapped with respect to the support 12 the brush arms 10, 11 have a large free length.
The above embodiment is given by way of example only and various modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
