Description

Child Safety Seat This specification relates to a child safety seat for a car.
It is known to provide a child safety seat which can be secured to a standard car seat to provide a safe support of a size suitable for babies, infants or small children. Such seats are designed to face either the front or the rear of the car.
A problem with these seats is that when a child is to be loaded into a front facing seat from a side door of the car there are difficulties in lifting the child past a side portion of the safety seat in the limited available space, adjusting the position of the child, and ensuring that the child is safely strapped into the seat. Clearly similar difficulties arise in gaining access to a rear facing seat.
There is disclosed herein a child safety seat for a car, comprising mounting means arranged to be secured relative to a car seat, and a child support mounted on the mounting means so as to be movable between a first longitudinally facing position for supporting the child when the car is in motion and a second at least partially sideways facing position to facilitate access to the child support when the car is stationary.
With such an arrangement, a child can be lifted into or out of the support of the safety seat when it is in for example a position facing a car door, thereby facilitating access to the safety seat and reducing the amount of lifting effort required. This is particularly useful for a mother who is looking after more than one child and who may also be pregnant or otherwise less mobile than usual. Once the child has been properly located and secured in the child support it can then be moved to a position suitable for when the car is in motion e.g. facing forwardly or rearwardly.
The child support may be movably mounted on the mounting means in various ways. For example, the child support may be mounted to rotate about a generally vertical central axis, there being provided on the child support or on the mounting means a circular or part-circular bearing surface extending about the central axis, with one or more bearing members engaging the bearing surface to permit rotation of the child support on the mounting means. The diameter of the circular or part-circular bearing surface may be quite large, for example of the same order as the dimensions of the child support, so as to provide a laterally stable mounting for the child support. The bearing surface may take the form of a cylindrical recess in which a solid our hollow shaft is rotatably received, but preferably comprises an.annular slot into which bearing means extends. The bearing means may be a continuous annular bearing member, or a plurality of discreet circumferentially spaced bearing members.
In order to reduce friction between the relatively rotatable parts suitable low friction materials may be used e.g. PTFE. Alternatively, roller or ball bearings may be used. In either case the parts will be arranged and dimensioned to take into account thermal deformations so that the child support is movable between the first and second positions on very hot or very cold days.
The engagement of a bearing member or members in an annular slot may tend to resist relative vertical movement of the child support and mounting means e.g. by arranging the bearing members to project horizontally into an appropriately formed slot. More than one e.g. two annular slots may therefore be provided to give additional security.
However, in view of the substantial forces between the child support and the mounting means which might arise in the event of an accident, a central tie is preferably provided to secure the support to the mounting means while permitting relative rotation therebetween. Such a tie can ensure that the appropriate safety standards can be met and exceeded.
The child support may be locked in its respective positions by various locking means. Preferably a locking member is resiliently biased in a locking direction to lock the child support to the mounting means and can be operated against the biasing force to release the child support and enable movement thereof relative to the mounting means. Such an arrangement is easy to operate and this is clearly desirable to assist a user in moving the child support between its respective positions. The locking member may be located beneath the child support so that a seated child cannot reach it.
The child safety seat may be arranged to provide only two locked positions of the child support, one facing forwardly, and one generally at right angles thereto facing a side door of the car through which the child is to enter or leave the car. However, for greater versatility, more than two locked positions of the child support are available, for example to enable the child support to face either side of the car or to face rearwardly. It may be desirable to secure the child safety seat on the back seat of a car not having back doors, in which case intermediate locked positions may be provided (e.g. at an angle of about 300 to 500 to the forward facing position) to enable the child support to face either front door.
The child safety seat will normally be arranged such that the child support can be moved between the desired positions without being obstructed by the back of a conventionally shaped car seat.
Although this might be achieved by spacing the child support sufficiently forwardly of the car seat back, preferably the rear of the child support is curved in such a way as to avoid obstruction by a standard car seat during movement of the child support. A rotatable child support might for example have a rear portion curved generally about the axis of rotation.
The mounting means will generally rest on the car seat and be provided with suitable means for securing it relative thereto e.g. straps which can be connected to fixed parts of the car. The mounting means may be a plate or frame of suficiently wide dimensions to provide a stable base and of a suitable shape for stability on a car seat e.g.
generally square, circular or triangular. It may also be profiled to fit more closely the shape of a contoured car seat.
In a preferred embodiment, the connection between the child support and the mounting means is provided by a pair of coaxial and relatively rotatable mounting cylinders, one being received within the other. This provides a stable mounting for the child support while permitting a lightweight construction. Relative vertical movement between the cylinders can be prevented by providing one of the cylinders with one or more radial bearing projections which engage in an annular groove of the other cylinder. In a preferred form of this arrangement, an outer cylinder extends downwardly from the child support and surrounds an inner cylinder which extends upwardly from the mounting means, there being locking means comprising a locking member carried by the outer cylinder and resiliently biased in a radially inward direction, and a plurality of locking openings spaced around the circumference of the inner cylinder for receiving the locking member to locate the outer cylinder in a plurality of locked positions, the locking member being movable in a radially outward direction so as to disengage from a respective locking opening to release the outer cylinder and enable rotation thereof relative to the inner cylinder. This arrangement provides for easy access to the locking means so that a simple unlocking operation can be performed when it is desired to rotate the child support between the required positions.
A preferred embodiment will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a child safety seat; Figure 2 is a plan view; Figure 3 is a front view; and Figure 4 is a section on the lines IV-IV of Figure 3.
Referring to Figures 1,2 and 3 the child safety seat 1 comprises a base 2 arranged to be secured to a car and a child support 3 mounted on the frame so as to be rotatable about a generally vertical axis.
The base 2 is in the form of a plate which is generally square in plan to provide stability.
The base has front and rear slots 4, 4a to secure it to the car by means of conventional straps. The child support 3 comprises a body shell 5 (see Fig. 4) which is padded and upholstered to form a chair 6 having a safety harness 7 for securing a child in the chair.
The rotating assembly and locking means is shown most clearly in Figure 4. A non-rotatable, vertically extending, inner mounting cylinder 8 is rigidly fixed to the base 2. An outer mounting cylinder 9 is fixed to the chair 6 and extends downwardly therefrom to surround and engage the inner cylinder 8. The outer cylinder is formed with a plurality of circumferentially spaced bearing members 10 which project radially inwardly into a corresponding lower annular groove 11 defined by a runner 12 rigidly secured to the inner cylinder, thereby securing the outer cylinder against vertical movement while permitting rotation thereof. An upper annular groove ila is defined by a runner 12a and is engaged by a further plurality of circum ferentially -spaced bearing members 10a.The inner cylinder 8 has an integral upper portion 13 formed with a hole through which passes a central tie 14 which serves to hold the chair 6 relative to the inner cylinder while permitting rotation.
The locking means comprises a locking member 15 which extends through a boss 16 provided on the outer cylinder at a location between the lower and upper bearing members 10, 10a. The locking member is radially inwardly biased by a spring 17 housed within the boss 16 so as to be engagable in a plurality of locking openings 18 spaced around the circumference of the inner cylinder. At its outer end the locking member has a handle 19 which can be pulled outwardly by a user against the spring force to disengage the member from a respective locking opening to unlock the chair 6 and enable it to be rotated to the desired position. Once the locking member has been disengaged and the chair 6 rotated slightly so that the locking member and opening are no longer in alignment, the chair can be rotated without having to maintain an outward force on the locking member. When the locking member 15 is next aligned with a locking opening 18 the member will automatically engage in the opening under the force of the spring to arrest the chair.
Thus the child safety seat can be easily operated using just one hand. Furthermore the locking member is located beneath the chair and thus cannot be reached by the seated child but is easily accessible by the user.
It will be noted from Fig. 2 that the rear surface 20 of the chair 6 is curved generally about the axis of rotation such that when the chair is rotated to a side facing position it does not project significantly beyond the base 2 and thus is not obstructed by the back of the car seat on which the safety seat is positioned.
As many as possible of the components of the child safety seat will be formed from moulded plastics to keep weight and manufacturing costs to a minimum, whilst at the same time ensuring that safety standards are met or exceeded. Light alloys or other metals may also be used. In general the bearing members 10, 10a and the runners 12, 12a which receive them will be formed of materials selected to keep friction during rotation of the seat to a minimum.
Modifications to the child safety seat as disclosed herein both in its broad aspects and its specific forms may be apparent to a person skilled in the art and such modifications are intended to be within the scope of this disclosure.
