Abstract

Operating and controlling doors by springs and checks. - A door provided with a closing spring is checked by a brake device that comprises a brake shoe adapted to be drawn into frictional engagement with the brake surface by a wedge-like action as the door closes. In the arrangement shown, a drum 3 connected to the operating lever 1 has a brake surface 3a that is engaged by a spring- pressed shoe 8 to form the door check. During the opening movement of the door against the action of the closing spring the surface 3<a> slides over the wedge, which tends to be displaced against the action of the spring 6<a>. As the door closes, this spring forces the wedge between the abutment 9 and the drum, the action of the brake surface tending to increase the brake action. By means of the adjustment members 10, 6<b> the door may close in the desired manner. The brake surface may be eccentrically arranged in order that the check action decreases as the door nears its fully-closed position. Instead of employing a slidable wedge as the brake device, an eccentric or cam mounted to have a rotary movement on a spindle may be used. In this modification, the brake device is drawn between the brake-surface and the abutment 9 by a wedgelike action as the door closes. In addition to the usual door-closing spring, the device may be provided with a second coil spring which acts as a door check. Specification 220,528 is referred to.
