Abstract

A self-assembly digital record and cassette cabinet (27) has a casing (12) having an internal partition (16) supporting runners (18). A first set of drawers (20) of a first size accepts audio cassettes and a second set of drawers (22) of a second and larger size accepts digital discs. Each drawer may have an adjustable backstop (24). The cabinet (27) may be combined with a cabinet (25) with adjustable shelves for stacking hi-fi equipment. <IMAGE>

Description

STORAGE CABINETS This invention relates to modular storage cabincts and is based on the realization that the similarity in dimensions between audio cassettes and digital audio discs is such that they may be stored in drawers one above the other in a cabinet, giving a very neat and compact storage facility.

Broadly stated, therefore, the invention provides a modular cabinet having within a single casing a first set of drawers of one size to receive audio cartridges and a second set of drawers of a different size to receive digital audio discs.

Conveniently the drawers are arranged in columns each having drawers of the first and second set and there are suitably two columns in a side-by-side relationship.

The drawers may occur in a first space of the cabinet vertically partitioned from a second space having shelves for supporting audio equipment modules. A hinged portion of a cabinet top advantageously gives access to the second space.

Various embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1 and 2 are side and front views of a cabinet according to the invention; Figure 3 is a front perspective view of a second form of the cabinet; and Figure 4 is a view of a separate "stack" receiving cabinet.

In Figures 1 and 2, a self-assembly digital record and cassette cabinet is shown in its assembled form. It has a plinth 10, a casing 12 that is supported on the plinth 10 and a top 14 that fits onto the casing 12. The casing 12 has an internal partition 16 that divides its internal space into two compartments each housing a set of drawers. Runners 18 support an upper set of drawers 20 of a first size and a second set of drawers 22 of a second and larger size. Each drawer 20, 22 is provided with an adjustable back stop 24 so that tall articles in it may be stored upright without their falling over as the drawer is open or closed. The internal dimensions of drawers 20 are such as to accept audio cassettes, and the internal dimensions of drawers 24 are such as to accept digital discs.

A second form of the cabinet shown in Figure 3 is similar except that the casing 12 is extended to define a second portion 25 of the module to one side of the drawercarrying first portion 27. The portion 25 is provided with adjustable shelves 29 and a hinged door 31. An extended top 33 covers the portions 25, 27 and is provided with a lid 35 giving access to a top internal space 37 of the portion 25. Thus the portion 25 may be used to house a "stack" of high-fidelity amplifer, radio receiver, cassette player and digital disc player modules, the disc player being housed conveniently in the space 37 and the lid 35 giving easy access for changing the disc. The shelves 29 are supported by fittings engaging in holes 38 in an end panel 39 and a common partition 41, the holes 38 being drilled to accommodate "euroscrews" which are also used to fasten door hinges 41 and the runners 18 of portion 27.

The cabinet of Figure 4 is similar to the second portion 25 of the cabinet 23 except that it is supplied as a separate module.

The cabinets may be made of plastics faced particle board and pre-drilled so that they may be sold as a flatpack and bolted together by the customer at his home.

They can provide efficient and attractive storage both for audio equipment and for the digital discs and audio tapes used in association with them.

Claims

1. A modular cabinet having within a single casing a first set of drawers of one size to receive audio cartridges and a second set of drawers of a different size to receive digital audio discs.

2. A cabinet according to Claim 1, wherein the drawers are arranged in columns, each column having drawers of the first and of the second set.

3. A cabinet according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein there are two columns of drawers in side by side relationship.

4. A cabinet according to any preceding claim, wherein the drawers occur in a first space vertically partitioned from a second space having shelves for supporting audio units.

5. A cabinet according to Claim 4, wherein the cabinet has a top, a hinged portion of which overlies the second space.

6. A modular cabinet substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 or Figures 1, 2 and 4 or Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.
