Abstract

An article of furniture comprising a vertical board (1) having a plurality of horizontal grooves (2) which run along at least a substantial portion of the length of the board, the grooves extending downwardly into the thickness of the board and a plurality of units (3) having lips which clip into the grooves (2). The board (1) may be screwed to a desk (5) and may further comprise a panel 10 which extends into groove 9 which panel may hold sockets 12 for electrical plugs 13 of type writers end the like. Alternatively the board (1) may be hooked on a screen or screwed to a wall. <IMAGE>

Description

ARTICLE OF FwtNITDRE The present invention relates to an article of furniture.
In recent years, many articles of furnitureshelving units in particular - have been fabricated from plastics or extruded metals. While such materials allow for great flexibility of design and accurate production, they do tend to be expensive.
An object of at least one embodiment of the invention is to provide an article of furniture which is extremely versatile while being relatively cheap to produce.
According to the present invention there is provided an article of furniture comprising a board which, in use, is held in a substantially vertical position, wherein the board has a plurality of horizontal grooves which run along at least a substantial portion of the length of the board, the grooves extending downwardly into the thickness of the board, the article further comprising a plurality of units having lips which clip into the said grooves.
Preferably, the article has brackets to mount it on the edge of a desk so that the board is above the level of the desk. Thus, the article acts as a "desk organiser". The board may also have a bottom groove which, unlike the other grooves, extends upwardly into the thickness of the board. A plate may be slotted into this groove, which plate has a recess for mounting electrical sockets. The plate may also have a rubber flap along its lower edge which abuts the desk surface.
The flap will allow the cables of typewriters, computers and the like to be hidden behind the plate after the machines have been plugged into the sockets.
The article may alternatively include hooks for hanging it on screens, for example at Exhibitions.
Still further, it may have screw holes in the board for mounting the board onto a wall.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is described below, by example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a front view of the article of furniture; and, Figure 2 is a sectional view of the article mounted on a desk.
The article of furniture shown in Fig. 1 comprises a board 1 which is mounted in a vertical plane. The board 1 includes a plurality of horizontal grooves 2 which run along the entire length of the board. The grooves extend downwardly into the board, as seen in Fig. 2, at an angle of approximately 45" to the horizontal. The article further comprises a plurality of units 3 which have lips which clip into the grooves 2. One such unit 3 is illustrated in Fig.
2. This unit is a letter tray, but the units may be hook-telephone holders, magazine racks, pencil pots, ash-trays, shelves or magnetized memo strips, for example.
The board is preferably formed of medium density fibre board, which is relatively cheap, but could be formed of a hard wood instead.
As shown clearly in Fig. 2, the article also includes a pair of brackets 4 for connecting the board to the edge of a desk 5. The bracket 4 comprises an upright-portion 6 attached to the board 1 and a pair of horizontal clamping plates 7, through the lower one of which passes a screw 8 for tightening against the desk 5.
The board 1 includes a lower groove 9 which is similar to grooves 2 except that it extends upwardly into the thickness of the board. A plate 10 running the length of the desk 5 slots into the groove 9 and with a rubber strip 11 at its lower edge abuts the surface of the desk. In the plate 10 is mounted a socket or sockets 12 for the electrical plugs 13 of typewriters and the like. The cables of such machines can be pushed under the flap 11 and hidden behind the plate 10. The plate 10 may have triangular end plates to close off the ends and to complete the attractive finish of the article.
As mentioned above, the article may be mounted on screens by hooks (not shown) or could simply be screwed to a wall.

Claims (8)

CLAIMS:
1. An article of furniture comprising a board which, in use, is held in a substantially vertical position, wherein the board has a plurality of horizontal grooves which run along at least a substantial portion of the length of the board, the grooves extending downwardly into the thickness of the board, the article further comprising a plurality of units having lips which clip into the said grooves.
2. An article according to claim 1, further comprising brackets to mount it on the edge of a desk.
3. An article according to claim 1 or 2, comprising a groove adjacent its base, which groove extends upwardly into the thickness of the board.
4. An article according to claim 3, wherein a plate is slotted into the upwardly extending groove.
5. An article according to claim 4, wherein the plate has at least one recess for an electrical socket.
6. An article according to claim 4 or 5, wherein the plate has a rubber flap along its lower edge.
7. An article according to claim 1, having hooks for screw holes for mounting it on a screen or wall respectively.
8. An article of furniture substantially as herein described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
