Abstract

A backpacking frame is provided for carrying a child from the time the child can support his or her own head (approx. 6 months) to approx. three years old, wherein the child faces to the rear of the carrier. The design allows for a load to be carried easily at the same time as carrying the child. The child carrier may be adjusted for height and depth to accommodate children of various sizes, and may be removed from the main frame allowing it to be used to carry full loads in the normal manner of such a frame. The main frame itself may be adjusted to the length of back of the carrier. <IMAGE>

Description

A REAR FACING CHILD CARRYING FRAME ite invention relates to a2 adjustable pack frame with renoveable child carrying facility, trie child facing to the rear of the carrier.
Child carrying frames have long been available. These however have the child facing in the direction of the carrier and in a purpose built one piece unit. This arrangement puts the child's weight away from the carrier, the child:'5 legs are cramped, aad the carrying of equipment together with the child is difficult to arrange.
The idea here described has the child seated facing to the rear of the carrier and in a frame which is both adjustable and useable as a normal pack frame when not required for carrying the child. The design puts the child's weight against the back of the carrier (giving far better weight distribution together with greater stability for both child and carrier). Ine child's legs are not cramped and can kick and stretch. A substantial load(eg camping equipment) can easily be carried together with the child without interfering with his or her comfort. When not required for child transport this part of the frame is easily removeable allowing a full load to be carried on the frame in the normal manner.
The frame is easily adjustable to accommodate children of various sizes and also to the length of back of the carrier.
An example of the idea in practice is illustrated usingthe accompanying drawings Fig I Shows the general arrange:nent and illustrates the points mentioned in the description Childs weight close to carrier giving good stability and weight distribution.
