Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO GASKETS This invention relates to a gasket for a pipe repair clamp.
Clamps for repairing gas and water pipes are well known and generally comprise a metal sheet which is sufficiently flexible that it can be located around the pipe to be repaired. A gasket is provided on the side of the metal sheet which is adjacent the pipe and means are provided for contracting the metal sheet around the pipe so as to urge the gasket into fluid tight engagement with the pipe surface thereby sealing any leak in the pipe. It is old pipes which are most likely to require repair. The outer surface of such pipes is often very uneven as a consequence of prolonged corrosion and obtaining a good seal thereon with known forms of pipe clamp cannot be ensured in all circumstances.
In addition new standards proposed by British Gas call for pipe repair clamps to be capable of forming a seal on a pipe having three longitudinally extending 2.00 mm deep grooves on the pipe surface. Many existing pipe repair clamps cannot form a seal on such a surface.
The present invention has been made from a consideration of this problem.
According to the invention there is provided a gasket for a pipe repair clamp comprising a sheet of resilient material, said sheet having a plurality of ribs extending across one face thereof in a direction which is such that when the gasket is in use, the ribs extend around the pipe to be repaired.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the ribs are parallel to each other. Preferably ribs are arranged in groups. The number of ribs in the groups may differ and the spaces between each group may be the same or different.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Fig. 1 is an edge view of a gasket; and Fig.2 is a partial section on the line II-II of Fig.l.
Referring to the drawing the gasket comprises a sheet 10 of rectangular shape made of resilient material for example natural or synthetic rubber. A plurality of parallel ribs 12 are provided across one side of the gasket. The ribs are the same shape and size and are arranged in alternate groups of two 14 and three 16, there being equal spaces 18 between the groups. It is understood that this arrangement of ribs is not critical and other arrangements can be adopted.
As can be seen in Fig.l opposite ends 20, 22 of the gasket are of progressively reducing thickness. The dimensions of the ribs are also gradually reduced in size towards the said ends 20, 22.
In use the gasket is arranged in a pipe clamp so that the ribs will extend around the pipe and with the tapered ends 20 and 22 overlapping. It has been found that the gasket can accommodate uneven surfaces of a pipe caused for example by corrosion and make a fluid tight seal thereon.
The invention is not restricted to the above described specific embodiment. Many variations and modifications can be made.

Claims (9)

1. A gasket for a pipe repair clamp cosmprising a sheet of resilient material, said sheet having a plurality of ribs extending across one face thereof in a direction which is such that when the gasket is in use the ribs extend around the pipe to be repaired.
2. A gasket as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the ribs are parallel to each other.
3. A gasket as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the ribs are arranged in groups.
4. A gasket as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the number of ribs in adjacent groups is different.
5. A gasket as claimed in Claim 3 or Claim 4, wherein the spaces between adjacent groups is the same or different.
6. A gasket as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the ribs are of triangular cross section with an apex directed away from the sheet.
7. A gasket as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the ends thereof are of progressively reducing thickness.
8. A gasket as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the dimensions of the ribs are gradually reduced towards the ends thereof.
9. A gasket for a pipe repair clamp substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
