Abstract

220,076. Wade, H., (Universal Winding Co.). May 10, 1923. Clutches; gearing for stopping and starting machinery.-The operation of a part or the whole of a machine is arrested if the functioning thereof is resisted. The invention is described as applied to the machine for winding yarn, wire, &c. described in Specification 220,058, wherein a. guide carriage L is moved relatively to the former K on which wire is wound bv a screw 0 which is operated intermittently from the spindle S by ratchet gearing on a shaft 0'. A gear wheel 7, which drives the shaft O directly through a clutch 110 or through change gearing, is coupled to the shaft O<1> by a, slipping clutch, which yields to allow of a momentary arrest of the guide carriage or. if the obstruction persists, effects the stoppage of the machine. The gear 7 is connected to a hub 105 fast on the shaft O<1> by radial pins 115, Fig. 6, controlled by a spiral spring 120, and by longitudinal pins 126 connected to a spring-controlled disc 130 which operates a lever 102, Fig. 1, connected with a, rod 88 forming part of the stop-gear of the machine. The ends of the pins 115, 126, which engage the hub 105 are tapered, and the taper of the pins 115 is sharper than that of the pins 126 and the seats 128 are relatively wide and flat, so that, if the motion of the guide carriage is obstructed, the movement of the pins 115 against the spring 120 effects a momentary arrest of the gear 7 and the shaft 0, but if the obstruction is not overcome by such arrest, the pins 126 operate the disc 130 to effect the stoppage of the machine. The spindle S is driven by chain gearing 53, Fig. 3, from a shaft which is driven by toothed gears 47, 49 from a belt pulley 44 carried by a pivoted bracket 40. By means of a pedal lever 72 the bracket is moved against the action of a spring 63, to remove the pulley 44 from a brake shoe 57 and to tighten the belt. The brake shoe comprises a curved spring metal plate lined with leather or like material and bent on a radius less than that of the pulley 44 so as to impart a gradual braking action. A rod 75 extends from the pedal and, during the normal running of the machine, is held in the position corresponding to the depression of the pedal by a stop 82 on a spindle 79 coupled to the rod 88, as shown in Fig. 4. When the lever 102 is operated as above described, the rod 88 is moved thereby against the effect of a spring 98 to remove the stop 82 and free the rod 75 and pedal lever 72, whereupon the spring 63 operates the bracket 40 and stops the, machine. When the rod 88 is so moved, a catch 94 on a hand-lever 92 freely mounted on the spindle 79 engages a notch therein and, upon re-starting, the rod 88 is. retained in this position and the pedal and rod 75 retained in the control of the operative until he is satisfied that the machine is working satisfactorily, whereupon he moves the handle 92 to the right and releases the rod 88 and thereby locks the rod 75. The machine may be stopped by hand at any time by moving the lever to the right so that it engages a pin 97 on a bracket on the shaft 79 to release the stop 82, whereupon the rod 75 rises and rides against the stop 82 and permits the lever 92 to be released so that the catch 94 again engages the rod 88.
