Abstract

The cover comprises a hood and a separate apron (16) of transparent plastics material. The hood comprises first and second U-shaped hood frame members (1 and 2), a transparent plastics sheet (4) secured to and extending between the hood frame members (1 and 2), and a third frame member (3) which is angularly movable relative to the hood frame members (1 and 2) about pivotal connections at the ends of the side arms of the frame members (1, 2 and 3). In use the hood is secured over the upper part of the pushchair by clasps and the third frame member (3) can be moved from adjacent the second hood frame member (2) into a forward position to form a frame for the separate apron (16) which covers the lower part of the pushchair in the fully assembled cover. <IMAGE>

Description

A COVER FOR A PUSHCHAIR This invention relates to a cover for a pushchair or perambulator of the kind comprising a hood having means for attachment to the pushchair or perambulator, first and second hood frame members and cover means extending between the hood frame members, and a separate apron which is adapted to be attached to the hood and/or the pushchair or perambulator so as to form, together with the hood, the fully assembled-cover for the pushchair or perambulator.
Pushchair or perambulator covers of the kind set forth need to be quick and easy to assemble. Also, the apron should not be too close to the baby or small child within the pushchair or perambulator.
According to the present invention there is provided a cover for a pushchair or perambulator of the kind set forth in which a third frame member is pivotally connected to the first and second hood frame members and is pivotally movable from a first position adjacent to the second hood frame member into a second position in which it forms a frame for the separate apron which is arranged to extend over the second and third frame members in the fully assembled cover.
When a pushchair cover in accordance with the invention is not in use the apron can be stored separately from the hood which may be left temporarily or permanently attached to the pushchair with the third frame member in its first position adjacent to the second hood frame member. When attached to the pushchair by itself, the hood covers an upper part of the seat of the pushchair. Conveniently, releasable retaining means may be provided on one or both of the second and third frame members for retaining the third frame member in its first position.
when the apron is required for use it is a relatively simple operation to move the third frame member pivotally from its first position into its second position, then to place the apron over the second and third frame members and, if necessary, to attach the apron to appropriate parts of the hood and/or the pushchair.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hood of a cover for a pushchair; Figure 2 is a plan of a rear cover portion adapted to be secured to the hood of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a plan of an apron which together with the- hood of Figure 1 forms a pushchair cover in accordance with the invention; Figures 4 and 5 are schematic side views of a pushchair incorporating the hood of Figure 1 shown respectively in an open condition and in a folded condition; Figure 6 is a schematic side view similar to that of Figure 4- but with the apron of Figure 3 also attached to it; and Figure 7 is a perspective view of the pushchair of Figure 6 which has the hood, rear cover portion and apron of Figures 1 to 3 attached to it.
The hood shown in Figure 1 comprises first and second hood frame members 1 and 2, a third frame member 3 and a transparent plastics sheet 4 secured to and extending between the hood frame members 1 and 2.
The frame members 1,2 and 3 are substantially Ushaped, each having two side arms joined by a crossmember, and they are movable angularly with respect to each other about two pivotal connections 5 at the free ends of their side arms. The hood frame members 1 and 2 are thus able to be moved between a folded position in which they are next to one another and the open position of Figure 1. A pair of hinged struts 6 and 7 connected to the side arms of the hood frame members 1 and 2 enable the hood to be locked in the open position and also provide rigidity for the hood.
The third frame member 3, although pivotally connected to the hood frame members 1 and 2, is not connected to the transparent plastics sheet 4 and does not form part of the framework for the hood itself. The third frame member 3 is free to move angularly with respect to the hood frame members 1 and 2 and when not in use occupies a position in which it is adjacent to the second hood frame member 2. Releasable retaining means in the form of two pieces 8 and 9 of interengaging filamentary fabric material of the type sold under the name "Velcro are provided on the cross-pieces of the second and third frame members 2 and 3 to retain the third frame member in this position.
Two C-shaped resilient clasps 10 are provided at the pivotal connections 5 for attaching the hood to the tubular sides of a pushchair. Each of the pivotal connections 5 also has a disc-like extension 11 and at least one of the side arms of the first hood frame member 1 has a male part 12 of a snap fastener providing means by which the rear cover portion of Figure 2 may be attached to the hood.
The rear cover portion of Figure 2 comprises a generally trapezoidal shaped transparent plastics sheet 13 which is adapted to be secured to the hood of Figure 1 by elasticated loops 14 at two of its corners that hook around the disc-like extensions 11 and by the female part 15 of a snap fastener at a third corner which co-operates with the complementary male part 12 on the said one side arm of the first hood frame member 1. The fourth corner of the rear cover portion 13 may be permanently secured to the other side arm of the first hood frame member 1, for example, by a riveted connection. Alternatively, it may also be secured by a snap fastener.
The apron 16 illustrated in Figure 3 is formed from two pieces of transparent plastics sheeting joined together along a common edge 17. Figure 3 shows the apron 16 in a flat condition folded about the edge 17.
One of the pieces of sheeting forms an upper apron portion 18 having an edge 19 which is adapted to extend over and around the second hood frame member 2, and loops 20 of elasticated material are provided at the sides of this edge 19. The other piece of the sheeting forms a lower apron portion 21 which is provided with two hooks 22 that are adapted to hook onto appropriate parts at the front lower part of a pushchair, such as the axle for the front wheels.
The hood and the rear cover portion illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 are shown attached to a pushchair 23 in Figures 4 and 5. The C-shaped clasps 10 are clipped onto tubular side members of the pushchair to attach the hood, and the cover portion 13 is draped around the rear of the pushchair and secured to the hood by the snap fastener 12,15 and by the elasticated loops 14 which are hooked around the disc-like extensions 11.
Figure 4 shows the hood in its open position in which it covers the rear part of the seat 24 of the pushchair and Figure 5 shows the hood in a folded position. In each of these positions the third frame member 3 is retained in its position adjacent to the second hood frame member 2 by the releasable retaining means 8 and 9.
Figures 6 and 7 show the fully assembled cover on the pushchair 23. The third frame member 3 has been moved pivotally from the position it occupies in Figure 4 into a second position in which it extends substantially horizontally so as to form a frame for the separate apron 16. The apron 16 is so arranged that the edge 19 of its upper portion 18 extends over and around the second hood frame member 2, the edge 17 overlies the third frame member 3 and the lower apron portion 21 extends around the lower front part of the pushchair. The elasticated loops 20 at the sides of the edge 19 are hooked onto the disc-like extensions 11 of the hood and the hooks 22 of the lower apron portion 21 hook onto the axle 25 for the front wheels of the pushchair 23. Conveniently, a piece 26 of "Velcro" material is provided on the common edge 17 joining the upper and lower apron portions and engages with the piece 9 of "Velcro" on the cross-piece of the third frame member 3 to secure the apron 16 to that frame member 3.
The pushchair cover illustrated in the drawings can therefore be used to provide different amounts of cover for a small child sitting in the seat 24 of a pushchair 23 such as illustrated in Figures 4 to 7. In particular, the complete pushchair cover of Figures 6 and 7 is quick and simple to assemble and the pivotally movable third frame member 3 connected to the hood provides a frame for the apron 16 and ensures that the apron 16 is spaced away from the child in the pushchair seat 24.
