Abstract

A conventional cistern normally used for flushing toilets has an extractor fan 10 incorporated in such a manner as to utilize the water flushing pipe 7 that connects the cistern to the toilet basin by means of a Y-joint 9 in order to withdraw the fumes from human excrement deposited in said basin and expel the air to the outside of the room via the overflow-pipe 12, without interfering or impeding the operations of either pipes 7 or 12. A T-joint 14 with a long stem 15 so constructed that its opening end is submerged below the water level 16 at all times, ensures that the fumes are not released into the room, but allows any overflowing water to pass through the overflow-pipe 12 to the outside. <IMAGE>

Description

INTEGRATED CISTERN-FUME EXTRACTOR This invention relates to a cistern incorporating a fume extraction fan-.
Some bathrooms and toilets have an extraction fan installed into a wall or a window for the purpose of ventilation, removal of damp air and unpleasant smell from human excrement. This method of removing unpleasant air, however, is most inefficient due to the fact that the air in the room becomes contaminated first and then it is expelled by the extraction fan. This means that the foul air can linger on for a onsider-able amount of time after the person has used the toilet. It can also be an expensive process in order to install an extraction fan into the wall or the window of the toilet.
On th-: other hand, most bathrooms have a window which can be opened in ormer to ventilate the room when a person has been to the toilet.
However, this method is also inefficient, due to the fact that ,t can take a long time to ventilate the room and also it can cause discozu'ort tic the young and @@derly people, especially in winter and co]d .e#:ler conditions.
According tc the present invention there is provided a fume extraction fan (low voltage) installed in a suitable compartment and in-orporated the cistern mechanism of the flushing toilet, in such a manner that it utilizes the water delivery pipe to the toilet basin without img.eding or obstructing the flow of (flushed) water, in order to extract the unpleasant fumes from human excrement deposited in the basin, before it ca be released into the room. The unpleasant air is then expelled through the overflow-pipe (normally passed through the adjacent wall to the outside of the room) such that it does not interfere with the operation of the said pipe.The extraction fan can be switched ON automatically by various electronic techniques, so that it is orly operational when the person is sitting upon the toilet basin and switches OFF automatIcally after a predetermined delayed period.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in cross-section the principal operation and design of the cistern-fume extractor; Figure 2 illustrates one method of mounting a switch so as to start the operation of the extraction fan.
Referring to the drawing of Fig. (1)1 the cistern-fume extractor mechanism comprises of a one-way plunger 1 which forces the water contained in cylinder 2 over the U-section 3 when rod 4 is pulled upwards, thus siphoning the stored water 5 in the container vessel 6 down the delivery tube 7 into the toilet basin 8, see Fig.(2).
At the lowest part of the delivery tube 7 in the water container vessel 6, see Fig. (1), a Y-foint 9 with one arm as the air inlet allowes the fumes from the human excrement deposited in basin 8 to be withdrawn through the delivery tube 7 by the suction of fan 10 (low voltage) installed in t suitable compartment 11 and blown to the outside o; the bathroom along the overflow-pipe 12. A suitable grid-mesh 13 placed at the fan inlet of the Y-joint 9 prevents the siphoned water from being sucked into the fan ccmSartment 11.A T-oint 14 allows any overflowing water to pass through the overflow-pipe 32 to the outside of the bathroom, while one arm 15 of the T-joint 14 extended below the water level 16 at all times(i.e. during the flushing time when the water level drops), ensures that no fumes escapes into the water container vessel 6 and thus contaminate the air in the bathroom. A small U-bend 19 between the fan outlet and the T-joint 14, prevents any overflowing water from entering the fan compartment 11.
A suitable detector (such as a micro-switch, proximity sensor, infrared detector, etc.) installed at a point such as 17, shown in Fig.(2), in conjunction with a very simple electronic circuitary (not shown), enables the fan 10 to switch ON or OFF automatically, when for e::aple the lid of the toilet seat 18, the presence of a person, the pressure upon the toilet seat, etc., is detected.

Claims (4)

1 An air extraction fan (low voltage) installed in a suitable compartment and incorporated in the cistern mechanism of the flushing toilet in such a manner that it utalizes the water delivery pipe to the toilet basin, without impeding or obstructing the flow of (flushed) water, in order to extract and expell the unpleasent fumes from human excrement to the outside of the room through the overflow-pipe via a Tjoint with one stem under the water level at all times, and electronic means for switching the extraction fan ON or OFF automatically upon suitable detection methods.
2 A fume extractor incorporated in the cistern mechanism of the flushing toilet as claimed in claim 1, whereby a Y-joint with an air inlet arm having a suitable device for preventing the (flushed) water from entering the extraction fan compartment such as a grid-mesh or a gravity operated flap etc., installed in the lowest part of the water flushing pipe situated in the water storage chamber.
3 A fume extractor incorporated in the cistern mechanism of the flushing toilet as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, weherby a T-joint is provided at the outl-et of the extraction fan compartment so that one arm which has an open end is under water level at all times, allowing any overflowing water to be channelled to the outside of the room through the overflow-pipe.
4 A fume extractor incorporated in the cistern mechanism of the flushing toilet as claimed in any preceding claims, whereby suitable detector is provided in order to automatically sense the presence or the absence of a person using the toilet basin and thus switching the extraction fan ON or OFF (with a predetermined delay period) respectively by means of suitable electronics circuitry.
