Abstract

A motor vehicle thermostat can be set open before fitting which provides a comparatively large orifice for the release of air on cooling system filling. Setting is preferably obtained by the fitting of soluble spacers 12 which reposition the thermostat expansion capsule 1, and when the cooling system has been filled the spacers begin to dissolve and the thermostat eventually closes then operates according to coolant temperature. <IMAGE>

Description

Thermostat with Setting Facility The invention is a motor vehicle thermostat which can be set open before installation, tie large coolant orifice being utilised tor air release. The large orifice may minimise air pocket problems in the thermostat area, also allowing the rate of air release in many cases to be equal to that of cool iLig system filling.
Referring to the orawings; the thermostat is set open using soluble distance piec@ss to reposition the expansion capsule with its attache@ coolant plate. Fig 2. (The exapansion capsule rod is a sliaing iit only in the capsule, allowing repositioning of the capsule, ttiC rod being held at the point 6) As the cooling system is lilled and air is released, the distance pieces 12 become immersed and a process of dissolving takes place at a very slow rate. As tiie engine is run, the action of coolant flow with rise in temperature speeds the dis solving process and the thermostat begins to close. In audition to dissolving, the distance pieces also lose tneir hardness as coolant is aosor@e@ into tile porous material, some closing movement takin@ place as the capsule pin 4 settles into the material under capsule spring pressure. Following dissolving of the distance pieces and closing of the thermostat, iurther opening is by the action of tiie expansion capsule in response to coolant temperature only.
@ne type of air rel@ase provision is shown in Fig 4 being a "cut-away" section of the coolant plate forming an orifice when the plate is seated. This type of provision is retained lor air release when access is not to be gained to the therm- ostat lor setting.
S 1, 2 and 5 show side views of the thermostat Fig 3 shows two types of distance piece 4 " a coolant plate with retained bleed provision 6 @ a plan view ol the setting facility 7 7 " the distance piece positioning areas The thermostat comprises an expansion capsule I , rod 2 coolant plate/spring seatin@ 3 and setting pin 4.
A pressing 5 which iorms an installation flange, coolant plate seating and rod retention and press@re point 6 .
A spring 7 .
A pressing 8 forming a spring retainer, capsule guide and @lstance piece locating points/load bearing areas.
