Description
PACKAGE FOR A FOIL, FILM OR THE LIKE
DESCRIPTION
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a package for a foil, film or the like, in a web coiled into a roll, the package being provided with a withdrawal opening for the foil, a serrated strip, against which desired lengths of foil are intended to be torn off; and elements arranged at the insides of both opposing end walls of the package for retaining and/or carrying the roll of foil.
Backaround Art
Packages of the kind described above are known in the art. When such a package intended for small rolls of foil is opened, a tear-off edge is uncovered, against which a length of foil.drawn from the roll can be torn off. During uncoiling the foil from the roll, the roll is often lifted out of the package, and must be put back again before a length can be torn off. During the withdrawal operation itself it also occurs that the roll is lifted out of. the package, thus making it more difficult, or impossible, to tear off the foil against the tear-off edge.
The problem related above has been solved by arranging elements in the form of flaps on the insides of the package end walls, these flaps accordingly preventing unintentional lifting of the roll out of the package. Examples of such packages are to be found in the Swedish patent specification 7998952-0 (publication No. 432 241) and the US patent specifications 2 458 844, 2 743 009 and 3 229 812.
When a length is to be uncoiled from a larger roll of foil, there is no problem with the roll being lifted, and instead there are problems due to the difficulty of uncoiling the roll, since it rests with its relatively large weight against the bottom of the package.
In order to solve the last-mentioned problem, the package end walls can be provided with elements, which carry the roll so that the outmost layer of foil is spaced from the package walls. The elements in the form of flaps mentioned above are, however, not suitable for this purpose, since they have a shape which is not suited for achieving carrying the roll and turning it with the desired frictional resistance, as well as their being composed of a material having insufficient strength.
A further disadvantage burdening known packages of the kind mentioned in the introduction is that the tear-off edge on the strip is too weak, which is the case if it is made from the same material as the package material, or too sharp, which the case if it is made from metal. In the former case the tearoff edge is spoilt after a short time in use, and in the latter case the user can be injured.
Further disadvantages are that it is troublesome to put the foil roll in the package in the first place and that resistance to uncoiling the foil cannot be regulated.
Disclosure of the Invention
One object of the invention is at least partially to remove the disadvantages with the already known packages of the kind described above, and to provide a package that is easy to manufacture, erect and load, and that is easy for the consumer to use.
This object is achieved by the inventive package being given the distinguishing features disclosed in the following claims.
Description of Figures
Figure 1 is a development of the blank from which the inventive package is made.
Figure 2 is a perspective view from above of the package in an erected and closed state.
Figure 3 is a perspective view seen from below of the package in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the package in Figure 2, partially opened and during withdrawal of foil.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the package illustrated in Figures 2 - 4 in an opened state.
Figure 6 is a plan view of an insert included in the package of Figures 2 - 5, and
Figure 7 is a side view of the insert illustrated in Figure 6.
Preferred Embodiment
The blank illustrated in Figure 1 is of carton material and is divided into a plurality of areas, which are separated by crease lines (indicated by chain-dotted lines) and by manually rupturable weakening lines (indicated by dashed lines). In the finished package of Figures 2 - 5-, the areas 1 - 6 form the bottom, areas 7 and 8 two opposing long sides, areas 9 and 10 two opposing end walls, while the area 11 forms the upper side and part of the lid. The areas 12, 13 and 14, 15 form flaps, which are folded in towards the package from the upper edges of the end walls 9 and 10, respectively. The areas 16 - 18 form parts of the lid. The area 19 forms a part of the end wall 9,
When the package is erected, the areas 7 - 10 are folded in towards each other to form the side and end walls. The area 19 is then attached by glue to the area 9.The areas 3 and 4, 1, 5 and 2 and 6 are folded at right angles inwards to form the bottom.
The areas 3 and 4 or 5 and 6 have previously been coated with glue. After the last-mentioned folding operation the corners 20 and 21 are in mutual engagement such as to prevent the package from collapsing.
The insert illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 is intended for insertion in the package, which has been erected in the manner described above, together with a paper roll on which has been coiled a web of aluminium foil, plastics film or other material. The insert, denoted by 25, comprises relatively hard plastics material, and has been provided with two cupiike projections 26 and 27 by heat moulding stiffeners 28 and crease lines 29 at right angles to the stiffeners. A tear-off edge 30 has been formed on one side wedge of the insert.
Should the paper roll be made such that its ends project beyond the end surfaces formed by the foil web coiled up on it, the insert 25 is folded along the crease lines 29 so that end portions 25b and 25c are formed at right angles to the central portion 25a of the insert, with the bottoms of the cups 26 and 27 facing away from each other. The folding operation takes place with the paper roll provided with the foil situated adjacent the central portion, such that after folding the ends of the paper roll thrust into the cups 26 and 27.
Should the paper roll be made so that its ends are flush with the end surfaces of the foil web coiled up on it, the end portions 25b and 25c are folded so that the bottoms of the cups 26 and 27 are facing towards each other, and they are thrust into the ends of the paper roll.
The folded unit comprising the insert 25 and the paper roll with the foil on it is then inserted in the erected package described above, to assume the position illustrated in Figure 5, where the roll is illustrated by chain-dotted lines and denoted R.
In this position the tear-off edge 30 projects above the upper edge of the front side formed by the area 7, since the height of this side is less than that of the central portion 25a. After inserting the unit, the flaps 12, 13 and 14, 15 are folded in between the end walls 9 and 10 in the way illustrated in
Figure 5 to form lateral support for the upper parts of the end portions 25b and 25c.
The package is then closed by folding the lid, consisting of the areas 11, 16 - 18 into the position illustrated in Figure 2, where the areas 16, 17 are inserted between the front side 7 and the central portion 25a of the insert 25. In this state the package and its contents are distributed to the consumer.
When the consumer intends to use the foil in the package he folds the flap formed by the area 18 upwards to the position illustrated in Figure 4. He then inserts his fingers in the opening thus formed and pulls the lid 11, 16 - 18 upwards into the position illustrated in Figure 5. After pulling out a length of foil through this opening and folding the flap formed by the area -17 inwards a short distance from the flap formed by the area 16, he then inserts the flap 16 between the front side 7 and the outer side of the unit central portion 25a, simultaneously as the flap 17 is taken into engagement with the inside of the central portion 25a. The package then has the appearance illustrated in Figure 4, and is ready for use. During use, the user pulls the free end of the foil R' in Figure 4, the roll R rotating solely under the frictional resistance between the paper roll and the cups 26, 27, there being a certain amount of resistance against withdrawal of foil being provided by the edge of the withdrawal opening uncovered by the flap 18. On subsequent tearing off a length of foil against the edge 30, the part of the foil between the.edge 30 and the withdrawal opening is pressed by the free hand against the upper side of the package to facilitate tearing off.
Although only one embodiment of the package in accordance with the invention has been described above and illustrated on the drawings, it should be understood that the invention is not restricted to this embodiment, but solely by the disclosure in the claims.
