Abstract

A display-sales package has a transparent bag (10) to which is secured a saddle header (11). The rear side of this has a flap (17) cut from it, remaining attached e.g. along the fold line of the header (11), although with slits (18, 19, 21) or weaknesses. The ends of the flap (17) form wings (20), and when the flap is pushed through a slit with skew ends in a mounting board, the wings (20) distort and then revert to hook behind the board, thus holding the package. The latter can be removed by pulling, which tears off the flap. The front side of the header (11) preferably has an Euro-hole (13). <IMAGE>

Description

Display-Sales Package This invention relates to packages as commonly used for display of articles for sale. It is particularly concerned with the type of package comprising a bag or envelope, usually with a transparent plastics window at least, and with a suspension device attached to its upper edge. This is generally in the form of a folded card known as a saddle header, and it may carry sales information such as a description of the goods and the price, possibly with a related "bar code".
In existing packages of this type it is well known to provide the suspension card with a so-called "Euro-hole", i.e. a horizontal slot with a cut-out at the centre of its upper edge, designed to facilitate the packet being supported on a rod, hook or projecting finger.
Alternatively such packages may be displayed in an array on a mounting board, being fixed there, for example, by stapling. Existing packages of this design, while satisfactory in many ways, suffer from a number of disadvantages. For example, it may be difficult to remove the packages from the mounting board, and in some cases the suspension card may be torn away from the bag in doing so, thus leaving an open bag liable to spill its contents and without a price tag or bar code.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved package of this general type which will overcome some of the existing problems.
According to the present invention there is provided a package comprising a bag or envelope to hold one or more objects for sale, and a suspension device for the bag comprising a folded sheet or card stapled or otherwise attached to the bag and having a flap cut from one side but remaining attached to the card along a fold line, this attachment/fold line being cut and/or weakened to allow the flap to be inserted through a slit in a mounting board, to be then retained by wings at the edges of the flap, and to be subsequently removed from the board by tearing along the attachment/fold line.
Preferably, the attachment/fold line is coincident with the main fold line of the sheet or card.
For an option on the manner of mounting, the other side of the folded sheet or card may have a hole therein, and this may be covered by the flap before the latter is folded out from said one side, or otherwise removed.
Alternatively both sides of the folded sheet or card may have holes in registry. Preferably, the or each hole will be an Euro-hole.
The mounting board will conveniently have a number of spaced slits with the flaps of the packages inserted therethrough. Preferably, the slits will have end portions skew to a central portion, the end portions receiving said wings as the flaps are inserted.
The invention may be performed in various ways, and one specific embodiment will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a sales-display package, Figure 2 is a rear view thereof, and Figure 3 is a rear view of part of a mounting board showing the tabs of display packages in position.
In this example the package comprises a transparent plastics bag 10 to hold the items for sale and a suspension device 11 in the form of a saddle header, this being a folded card stapled to the top of the bag at 12, the fold line being uppermost. The front portion of the card has a hole 13 in the form of a normal Euro-hole, this being a horizontal slot with a cut-out in its upper edge. The rear part of the folded card is cut out along the line 14, 15,16 to form a central trapezoidal flap which can be bent upwards out of the plane of the card about the fold line, as illustrated at 17. This fold line has two slits 18 and 19 extending towards each other from the ends of the lines 14 and 16, thus providing the flap with wings 20, and in addition there is a short central slit 21 on the fold line to assist in tearing off the flap when required.
Instead of some of or all the slits 18,19 and 21, there may be a complete or interrupted line of weakness, created by scoring the material for example. It will then tear as necessary. Also, instead of having the fold lines of the card and flap co-incident, the flap could be within the boundaries of its side, and/or its fold line could be along its lower edge, which would then be longer than the upper edge. However, the construction shown is simplest.
Referring to Figure 3, a mounting board 24 for carrying an array of such packages is formed with a number of spaced horizontal slits 25 each with inclined ends 26.
These are shown as upturned, but they could be downturned, or one inclined up and the other down; and they could be curved rather than straight. The requirement is that they should be skew to the straight central portion.
To mount such packages on the board 24, the flaps 17 are folded upwards and then inserted through the slits 25 from the front of the board, the wings 20 bending to pass through the ends 26. The wings then re-straighten so that their edges which help define the slits 18 and 19 hook behind the board and prevent accidental withdrawal. However, each package can readily be removed from the board simply by tearing along the fold line.
These packages can be mounted in a conventional way, if desired, using the Euro-hole. In that case, the flaps 17 will be torn off first, or they themselves could be punched with registering Euro-holes. If that kind of mounting is not contemplated at all, then no holes need be provided and just the flaps would be used.
