Abstract

In the treatment of mixed waste such as refuse for the separate recovery of paper and plastics sheet material scrap, in particular in recycling plants, a pre-sorted fraction containing paper and plastics sheet material scrap is treated in a pulper (1), the paper pulp suspension thus obtained is withdrawn via screens and paper fibre recovered and the screening residue containing the plastics sheet material scrap is flushed out of the pulper, comminuted at (6) after the removal of liquid at (5) and the plastics sheet material portion is separated from a liquid phase at (14). In particular, the dewatered and comminuted screening residue, after separation of the heavy matter at (7) and a further comminution at (10), is freed in a gravity floating basin (11) of the floating light-weight portion, such as wood and plastics foam material, with the exception of plastics sheet material scrap, and subsequently treated in a flow-floating basin (14) in which the plastics sheet material scrap rises to the surface of the liquid under the influence of flow and is skimmed off at 21. <IMAGE>

Description

A Process and a Device for Processing mixed Waste such as Refuse or its Fractions for the Recovery of Plastics Sheet Material.
The present invention relates to a process and a device for processing mixed waste such as refuse or its fractions for the separate recovery of paper, on the one hand, and plastics sheet material, on the other hand, in particular in recycling plants.
It relates to the wet separation of paper and plastics sheets from mixed paper/plastics material waste, for example from a refuse recycling plant.
Depending on the location, domestic refuse contains about 30 to 40 percent of paper and 6 to 12 percent of plastics material waste. At adequate purity, both materials can be reused in industry without any problems.
In refuse recycling plants, dry separating processes such as air separation or drum separation are known for sorting paper and plastic materials as separate fractions. Both fractions can then be processed in individual processing operations to fibrous material (pulp) and plastics material granules. Drawbacks are the high investment and operating costs and partly the insufficient separating precision of such dry separating processes. Contamination degrees of both fractions of up to 30 percent or more are known.
If paper is recovered in a recycling plant, the wet processing treatment usually includes a pulping (slushing) system and a clarification plant. In this stage of the treatment, components other than paper, a.o. also plastics material sheets, are sorted out as refuse and discarded. It was thus the object to make this portion also reusable.
In order to solve this problem, it is proposed according to the invention to separate and pre-clean the two materials paper and plastics material sheets by expanding the wet slushing system so that these can be directly fed to the further processing treatments.
The process according to the invention is thus a process for the treatment of mixed waste such as refuse or its fractions for the recovery of plastics materials, in particular in recycling plants, in which a presorted fraction containing plastics material sheets is treated in a pulper, the in particular paper-pulp containing suspension obtained is drawn off via screens and the dirt phase containing the plastics material sheets is flushed out of the pulper.
The process according to the invention is mainly characterized in that for the recovery of the portion of plastics materials, a screening residue of dirt phase is allowed to accumulate, the screening residue is then flushed out of the pulper, comminuted after draining off the liquid and the portion of plastics sheet materials is subsequently separated from a liquid phase.
According to a still unpublished proposal of the applicant, liquid is conveniently removed from the screening residue discharged from the pulper in a perforated drum, which rotary screen is in particular partially immersible in a flushing liquid bath. The perforated drum is conveniently formed as a step drum with its volume decreasing in conveying direction and central discharge and is particularly provided with an inner helix and/or scoops, so that the screening residue in the perforated drum is not only conveyed, but also continuously loosened and mixed,so that small matter such as stones, glass or metal parts, hard plastic material parts and paper pulp fibers not yet separated can escape through the holes of the perforated drum.The perforated drum can also be provided as a cone drum with taper in conveying direction; the axis of the perforated drum can extend ascendingly in conveying direction.
The liquid can be removed from the screening residue in several steps; so, for instance, the material discharged from the perforated drum can subsequently be pressed and compacted in a press, in particular a screw conveyor.
The dewatered material is subsequently subjected to an at least onestep milling operation. Above all, it has proved useful to first mill the material in an essentially dry state to pieces the size of the palm of a hand, for instance in a conventional shredder, then loosen it hydrodynamically in a basin with process water under motion, so that adhering dirt particles are loosened and heavy matter sinks to the basin bottom, as well as skimming the material off the surface of the liquid and subjecting it to a preferably wet comminuting operation approximately to the size of a fingernail.
The light-weight portion of this material, namely easily floating substances such as wood or polystyrene foam, is subsequently separated from the fraction to be recovered, namely plastics sheet material scrap whose density is only slightly less than 1 so that it can float on water with little buoyancy. This is done in a gravity floating basin in which a descending flow whose rate is faster than the floating-up rate of the plastic material scrap is maintained, so that this scrap is entrained by the flow and is preferably discharged from the basin via a bottom outlet together with process water, while the light-weightmaterial portion floats up and is skimmed off.
According to a characterizing feature of the invention, the dewatered and comminuted screening residue, in particular after separation of the heavy matter and preferably after a further comminution, is freed in a gravity floating basin of floating light-weight portions, such as wood or plastics material foams, in particular polystyrene foam, with the exception of plastics material sheet scrap.
Further purification is effected by following the reverse procedure, namely a floating up of the plastics sheet material scrap in the process water.This serves above all for the final separation of sediments and suspended matter and in particular for the separation of fabric scrap in particular scraps of plastics material fabrics of which it was found that they are an addition which is considered as an extremely detrimental and quality-reducing contaminant for the subsequent processing of the plastics material scrap which normally yields granules.
These fabric scraps do not show floating behaviour like the plastics sheet material scrap, but are easily entrained by the flowing process water.
According to the invention, is it thus further provided that the dewatered and crushed screening residue is treated in a flow floating basin in which the plastics sheet material scrap rises, in particular is swept, to the liquid surface under the influence of flow and is skimmed off from there.
This flow-floating basin is conveniently divided, at least in respect to flow, into a floating zone with sedimentation hopper for the discharge of rapidly sinking impurities and a calming or flow-off zone ; the liquid flow in the floating zone is maintained in an essentially horizontal direction, the plastics sheet material scrap rises to the surface of the liquid in this flow. In the calming or flow-off zone, the flow is deflected, preferably in a descending direction, and entrains fibrous matter and fabric scraps, the liquid phase of both zones preferably being withdrawn through bottom outlets. The rising plastics sheet scrap is skimmed off the liquid surface and fed to the plastics material recovery as a pure product.
The flow rate and direction in the calming or sedimentation zone is adjusted so low that the rising plastics sheet material scrap is not entrained any further, thus remains on the surface of the liquid.
The invention is explained in the following on the basis of an exemplary embodiment under reference to the accompanying drawing diagrammatically showing that part of a refuse treatment plant used for the recovery of plastics sheet scrap in the processing of a pre-sorted paper/plastics material fraction according to the invention.
The paper/plastics material fraction normallly pressed into bales is slushed in a pulper 1 by means of circulating process water. The paper pulp obtained is drawn off via screens and returned to the paper recovery; the plastics sheet material is discharged, in particular flushed, from the pulper 1 together with the remaining waste as screening residue depending on the accumulated amount, conveniently after a brief slushing after the addition of water, and are passed to a step drum 2 with worm conveyor. The step drum 2 is a conventional perforated drum through whose holes heavy matter such as glass, metal, stones and the like, on the one hand, and process water loaded with entrained fibrous matter and suspended matter such as paper, on the other hand, are discharged and collected in a collecting vat 3 disposed underneath the step drum 2.The liquid level in the collecting vat can be so selected that the step drum is partly immersed, as this results in a good washing effect. The water from the collecting vat 3 is recycled to the pulper 1 as process water, the heavy matter is discharged via a screw conveyor 4 and collected as waste.The step drum 2 has a central discharge and the discharged material containing the plastics sheet material is further dewatered in a worm extruder 5 and milled in a pre-comminuter 6 to pieces about the size of the palm of a hand. The pre-comminuter material is then passed to a separating/floating/sedimentation basin 7, where larger, sinkable substances are separated. These are in particular metal pieces, undivided textiles, polyvinyl chloride and other sinkable hard plastics material pieces, leather and the like.The separating operation can be improved by the use of agitators or other turbulence generators.
The sinking portions are discharged via a bottom discharge 8; the floating portions including the plastics sheet scrap are removed from the surface of the liquid by means of a paddle device 9 and passed to a comminuter 10 which is conveniently formed as a wet-grinding mill and in which the material is comminuted to pieces about the size of a fingernail. The comminuted material passes to a gravity floating basin 11 which is charged from above with the finely comminuted material and process water. The finely comminuted material is conveyed to the gravity floating basin 11 by means of a paddle screw 12 in which dirt particles are knocked off.
The material is made to pass downwards in gravity direction in the gravity floating basin 11 together with the process water and centrally discharged in the bottom of the basin. Light-weight matter such as wood and plastics material foam, for instance polystyrene foam, float up and are skimmed off the surface of the liquid.
The process water with the entrained plastics material scrap is then pumped via a pump 13 into a flow- floating basin 14 through a lateral inlet 15, a horizontal flow being formed. A dividing wall 16 in the flow-floating basin 14 serves for deflecting the flow, on the one hand, and for the division into a floating zone with sedimentation hopper 17 and a calming or settling zone 18. The plastics sheet material scrap entrained by the liquid flow floats up; the process water with the suspended matter and contaminants contained therein is pumped off through a bottom outlet 19. A portion of the process water is discharged from the sedimentation hopper of the floating-up zone by a duct 22 and passed to the arc screen 24 together with the second portion of the liquid phase.
The plastics sheet scrap floating up is passed to on the surface of the liquid to the calming zone from the floating-up zone in which the flow is directed along the surface of the liquid, possibly supported by process water jets from a jet nozzle 20,and is skimmed off in the calming zone by a paddle discharge 21. The plastics sheet scrap is now virtually free of contaminants and passed to a conventional recovery plant where it is usually processed into plastics material granules.
Degrees of purity of more than 97 percent are obtained.
In the calming and settling zone 18, the flow orginally moved on the surface of the liquid is deflected downwards again; the flow now entrains all suspended and sinkable portions, in particular textile fibers and fabric scraps of plastics material fabrics, downwards to the outlet 19;the liquid phase is pumped onto an arc screen 24 by the pump 23 and there freed of solid matter. The solid matter, together with that of the bottom outlet 8 of the separating basin 7 and that skimmed off the surface of the gravity floating basin 11, is passed to a worm extruder 25 and discarded as waste fraction after compacting and dewatering.
The process water from the arc screen 24 is passed via a pump 26 to a collecting vat 27 and from there to the wet-grinding mill 10, on the one hand, and to the gravity floating basin 11, on the other hand.
Process water from the fibrous matter treatment, the worm extruder 25, the separating basin 7, the paddle screw 12 and the plastics material treatment process is passed to a clarification plant with sludge dewatering and is recycled in the purified state to the pulper 1, the wet-grinding mill 10, the jet nozzle device 20, the plastics material treatment process and the fibrous matter treatment process.
The flow chart shows further conventional conveying means such as pumps, conveyor belts and worm conveyors not designated in detail and gates, valves and control devices.
The device according to the invention is thus mainly characterized in that a pulper for the treatment of a pre-sorted fraction containing paper and plastics sheet material, a liquid removing means, in particular a perforated drum, for the screening residue discharged from the pulper, a crushing and comminuting means - optionally with compacter disposed upstream - for the filter residue treated in the liquid removing means, as well as at least one solid/liquid separating means, in particular a floating-up basin, for separating of plastics sheet material scrap as an upper phase are provided.
Further characterizing features of the device according to the invention which may be provided alone or in combination are the following: A rotary screen partially immersed into a washing or slushing liquid bath is provided.
A floating/settling basin for reslushing the screening residue and for separating heavy matter such as stones, metal pieces, hard plastics material pieces and the like is provided downstream of the comminuting means for the dewatered screening residue.
A comminuting means for the reslushed screening residue, optionally with dewatering compacter arranged upstream, is provided downstream of the floating/settling basin.
A gravity floating basin for separating floating-up light-weight matter portions such as wood or plastics material foam, in particular polystyrene foam, with the exception of plastics sheet material scrap, is arranged upstream of the solid/liquid separating means for separating the plastic sheet material scrap.
The solid/liquid separating means for separating the plastics material sheet scrap is provided in the form of a flow-floating basin in which the plastic sheet material scrap is present as an upper phase under the influence of flow, with a discharge means for the plastics sheet material scrap being provided in the area of the liquid level of the flowfloating basin.
The flow-floating basin has an inlet area in which at least one inlet and optionally flow deflection means are arranged in such a manner that a floating-up zone in which an at least essentially horizontally oriented liquid flow can be established.
A flow deflection means in the form of a dividing wall separates the floating-up zone of the basin from a calming and flowing-off zone.
The liquid flow in the calming and flowing-off zone of the flowfloating basin extends essentially in the direction of gravity.
The invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiment shown. So, for instance, a different process water treatment is possible and various conveying means, such as e.g. the paddle screw, may be omitted, so that the gravity floating basin 11 is charged directly via the wet-grinding mill 10, and the wet-grinding mill is charged directly via the outlet from the floating/settling basin 7.
As initially mentioned, the invention is particularly conveniently used in combination with a recycling plant which is already provided with a wet treatment for fibrous matter.

Claims (18)

Claims:
1. A process for the treatment of mixed waste such as refuse or its fractions for the recovery of plastics materials, in particular in recycling plants, in which a pre-sorted fraction containing plastics sheet material is treated in a pulper, the in particular paper pulp containing suspension is withdrawn via screens and the dirt phase containing the plastics sheet material is flushed out of the pulper,characterized in that for the recovery of the plastics material portion, a screening residue of dirt phase is allowed to accumulate, the screening residue is flushed out of the pulper, comminuted after removal of liquid and that the plastics sheet material portion is subsequently separated from a liquid phase.
2. The process according to claim 1, wherein a perforated drum is used to remove liquid from the screening residue discharged from the pulper.
3.The process according to claim 2,wherein the perforated drum which is used to remove liquid from the screening residue discharged from the pulper is partially immersed in a slushing liquid bath.
4. The process according to any one of the claims 1 to 3, wherein the dewatered and comminuted screening residue is freed of heavy matter in a sedimentation basin.
5. The process according to any one of the claims 1 to 4,wherein the dewatered and comminuted screening residue is freed, in particular after separation of the heavy matter and preferably after a further comminution, of floating-up light-weight matter such as wood or plastics material foam, in particular polystyrene foam, with the exception of plastics sheet material scrap,in a gravity floating basin.
6.The process according to any one of the claims 1 to 5, wherein the dewatered and crushed and/or comminuted screening residue is treated in a flow-floating basin in which the plastics sheet material scrap rises to the surface of the liquid under the influence of flow and is skimmed off from there.
7.The process according to claim 6, wherein the flow-floating basin is provided with a floating-up zone in which an at least essentially horizontally oriented liquid flow is maintained and rapidly sinkable contaminants are discharged through a sedimentation hopper.

A device for the treatment of mixed waste such as refuse or its fractions for the separate recovery of paper, on the one hand, and plastics sheet material scrap, on the other hand, in particular in recycling plants, characterized in that a pulper for the treatment of a pre-sorted fraction containing paper and plastics sheet material, a liquid removing means, in particular a perforated drum,for the screening residue discharged from the pulper, a comminuting meansoptionally with compacter arranged upstream - for the filter residue treated in the liquid removing means, as well at least one solid/liquid separating means, in particular a floating basin, for separating plastics sheet material scrap as the upper phase, are provided.
9.The device according to claim 8, wherein a rotary screen partially immersed in a washing or slushing liquid bath is provided.
10.The device according to claim 8 or 9, wherein a floating/settling basin for reslushing the screening residue and for the separation of heavy matter such as stones, metal pieces, hard plastic material pieces and the like is provided downstream of the comminuting means for the dewatered screening residue.
11. The device according to claim 10, wherein a fine-comminuting means, optionally with dewatering compacter arranged upstream, is provided downstream of the floating/settling basin for the reslushed screening residue.
12.The device according to any one of the claims 8 to 11, wherein a gravity floating basin for separating floating light-weight matter such as wood or plastics material foam, in particular polystyrene foam, with the exception of plastics sheet material scrap, is arranged upstream of the solid/liquid separating means.

The device according to any one of the claims 8 to 12, wherein the solid/liquid separating means for separating the plastics sheet material scrap is a flow-floating basin in which the plastics sheet material scrap is present as the upper phase under the influence of flow, with a discharge means for the plastics sheet material scrap provided in the area of the liquid level of the flow-floating basin.

The device according to claim 13, wherein the flow-floating basin is provided with an inlet area in which at least an inlet as well as optionally flow deflection means are arranged in such a manner that a floating-up zone in which an an least essentially horizontally oriented liquid flow is established is formed.
15.The device according to claim 14, wherein a flow deflection means in the form of a intermediary basin wall separating the floating-up zone from a calming and flowing-off zone is provided.
16. The device according to any one of the claims 13 to 15, wherein the flow-floating basin is provided in the calming and flowing-off zone with a liquid flow extending at least essentially in the direction of gravity.
