Description

1 GB2195414A 1
SPECIFICATION
A device for the connecting of units The present invention is a device that makes it possible to firmly join constructional units such as panels or bars or further splined shafts to a supporting structure having splined shafts.
It is known to provide splined shafts to 75 which panels can be connected in various po sitions corresponding to different radial planes relative to the shaft axis.
In such systems a clamp for receiving a panel includes a splined hole which mates with the splined shaft. The clamp is posi tioned on the shaft by sliding along from one end.
According to the present invention there is disclosed a device for connecting construc- 85 tional units such as panels or bars or further splined shafts to a splined shaft of a support ing structure, the device comprising a body defining a splined cylindrical cavity of comple mentary shape to the splined shaft, and clamping means having co-operating opposed clamping portions for clamping therebetween an edge or end portion of such a unit wherein the body is formed as two separable elements each defining both a semi-cylindrical portion of 95 the cavity and one of the clamping portions, the device further comprising connecting means for urging the elements into mutual en gagement to thereby clamp the device to both the shaft and the unit and thereby connect the unit to the shaft.
An advantage of such a device is that it can be connected to the splined shaft at any point along its length without the need for sliding the device from from end. A further advantage is that the device is firmly clamped to the shaft against relative axial movement.
Preferably the connecting means comprises a screw fitting.
In one alternative embodiment of the inven- tion the surfaces of the elements defining the semi-cylindrical cavity are splined over an area subtending less than 180'.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the grooves on the inside wall of the semi cylindrical cavity are separated by an angle of 15'. When used in conjunction with a splined shaft having correspondingly spaced splines this arrangement thereby enables a unit to be connected to a shaft at any one of 24 angular orientations relative to the shaft axis.
The clamping portions may define cylindrical cavities for receiving units in the form of cylin drical bars or splined shafts of complementary cross-section.
In such an arrangement the cylindrical cavi ties may extend in orthogonal directions.
Alternatively where the unit comrpises a panel the clamping portions may comprise op posed flanges. The flanges may define re-en- 130 trant portions for captively retaining an edge portion of a panel of complementary shape.
Conveniently the edge portion may be of, T cross section or dove tail cross section.
Further details and advantages, will be highlighted in the description given, of a connecting device which permits units such as panels, bars and upright structures, to be held firmly together.
By way of example, embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a general perspective view of the device im accordance with the inventiorn in use to connect a panel and splined shaft, Figure 2 is a side elevation view of the device of Figure 1, Figure 3 is an underneath plan view of the device Figure 2, Figure 4 is a second embodiment of the invention showing two connecting devices, Figure 5 is a third embodiment of the invention in which a device connects two shafts, Figure 6 is a fourth embodiment of the in- vention in which a device connects a bar to a shaft, Figure 7 shows the assembling of diverse supports on the edge of a panel, Figure 8 is an exploded view of a further embodiment of the invention for the connection of bars or shafts at multiple angles.
Figure 1 shows a device 1 connecting a panel 9 to a splined shaft 2.
The connecting device 1 itself is made up of two elements or sections (3) which have flanges (4) and opposed, semi- cylindrical fluted cavities. Each of the semi-circular fluted cavi ties when in position, ready for assembling as seen in Figure 2, form a splined cylindrical cavity, by the joining of the walls of the two semi-cylindrical cavities. The cylindrical cavity has 24 grooves (6) altogether, which thus provide grooves at intervals of 15'.
The cylindrical shaft (2) has an equal num- ber of grooves (7). In this particular embodiment of the invention the grooves 7 in the shaft as well as the grooves 6 in the cylindrical cavity extend to 360'. The grooves (6) and (7) could be arranged in separate groups covering less than 360' but it has been found this disposition gives less flexibility to the system.
The two elements (3) of the connecting device 1 are fixed one above the other with the help of connecting means comprising a screw (8) that goes through a hole bored into one of the elements, and penetrates a blind hole in the other where it is received in a threaded nut.
This permits the elements (3) to be clamped to the cylindrical shaft (2) whilst the flanges (4) clamp the panel (9). Small inserts (10) which can be seen in Figure 1 are provided between the flanges 4 and the panel 9.
The inserts are made of rubber, or some 2 GB2195414A 2 other equivalent material. They appear in cross-section, in the form of an enlarged channel with re-entering edges (10') which are introduced into the grooves (10') of the 5 flanges (4).
Figure 4 shows a variation in which two -connecting devices (11) are designed to permit the connection of panels (9') and (9") on each side of one cylindrical shaft (2).
Taking Figure 5 as a reference, it is ob- served that the connecting device (12) can be assembled upon two cylindrical shafts (2), and is made up of a connecting device formed by two sections (12') and (12") in which each one has 2 semi-cylyindrical splined cavities (13') and (13') respectively, the grooves/ splines are not shown in this figure.
The two sections. (12') and (12") are held together by a bolt (not seen) which is intro duced into the blind hole 14. A connecting 85 device of this kind is used for the joining of two splined shafts ofthe supporting structure.
Figure 6 shows a connecting device com posed of two elements (15') and (15") each one of which has two semi-cylindrical splined cavities (16') and (1 W) and (17')-(17") re spectively. The axes of these cavities cross at a right angle. Therefore the connecting device is held together with two cylindrical splined shafts that cross at 90'.
Figure 7 shows a particular structure in which a T shaped bracket (19) has been fixed to the edges of a panel (18). This bracket (19) supports a side piece (20) that covers the entire edge of the panel (18).
The side piece (20) has a swallow-tailed section that allows an intermediate element (21) to slide over it to the same section.
On the outside, this intermediate element (21) is for decorative purposes only.
(22) is a corner part made on the same principle as the part shown in Figure 6.
Figure 8 illustrates a connecting element made by assembling 4 elements, (23), (24), (25), (26), by means of a pin (not shown), this pin is introduced in holes (27), (28), (29), and in the Blind hole, (30). The referred con nectng element contains 16 cavities which are able to receive an equal number of cylindrical pieces.
Going back to Figure 1 it may be noted that the intermediate element (23) was foreseen, havimg the-same internal grooves.on each side of a connecting device.
From the above description it can be deduced that the conmecting device which makes a panel or, object similar to an upright structure, solidly, is simple, robust and easy to comprehend. The assembling is extremely easy and the flexibility of the system is considerable owing to the existence of grooves that extend 15', it can adjust a panel in relation with an upright structure, in 24 different positions, these positions being measured on a horizontal plan.
