Abstract

A releasable closure 10 for the neck 30 of a container, such as a bottle, consists of an outer member 11 having an annular body portion 13 which can be placed on the neck 30 and a pivotable lid portion 18 which when closed seals against an annular seal 16, and an inner sealing and retaining member 12 having a stem portion 20 can enter the seal against the neck 30 and having a plurality of downwardly extending fingers 29 which in use are clamped between the neck 30 and the annular body portion 13, the stem portion 20 being closed at its outer end by an end wall 22 which can be ruptured to form an opening by pulling on a ring 26 and which has a nipple 25 which can be severed to provide an opening instead of rupturing the wall 22. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Closure for a container This invention relates to a resealable closure for the neck of a container, such as a bottle, and to a container provided with such a closure.
According to the present invention there is provided a resealable closure for the neck of a container, comprising an outer member having an annular body portion which can be placed on said neck and a pivotable lid portion which can be placed in sealing engagement with said outer member, and an inner sealing and retaining member having a stem portion which can enter and seal against the neck and a plurality of downwardly extending fingers which in use are clamped between the neck and the annular body portion, and stem portion being closed at its outer end by a rupturable or severable wall.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a closure according to the present invention in position on the neck of a bottle, Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the closure in position on the neck of a bottle, Figure 3 is a side elevation of an inner seal member of the closure, and Figure 4 is a plan view of the inner seal member.
The closure is indicated generally at 10 and comprises an outer member 11 preferably formed of a hard plastics material and an inner sealing and retaining member 12 preferably formed of a softer plastics material.
The member 11 comprises a cylindrical member 13 having a skirt portion 14 and an end wall portion 15 which is provided with an annular sealing portion 16. Hinged to the cylindrical member 13 by a thin hinge portion 17 is a cap 18. The inner surface of the skirt portion 14 is provided with a plurality of circumferential ribs 19.
The inner seal member 12 comprises a cylindrical stem 20 which is provided with cir cumferentially extending ribs 21. The cylindrical stem 20 extends from an end wall 22 provided on its underside with an annular rib 23 and on its upper side with an annular rib 24. At the centre of the end wall 21 there is formed a conical nipple 25. Surrounding the nipple 25 is a ring 26 which is connected to the end wall 22 by a stem portion 27. The stem portion 27 is connected to the end wall 22 in an annular region which is weakened by an annular groove 28.
Extending downwardly from the periphery of the end wall 22 are a plurality of circumferentially spaced part flexible fingers 29 which increase in thickness towards their mid-length region.
In use, the inner seal member 12 is inserted into the skirt portion 14 until the end wall 22 contacts the end wall 15. The closure 10 is then placed on the end of the neck portion 30 of a container, such as a bottle and pushed onto the neck portion 30. The stem 20 enters the neck portion 30 and the ribs 21 are in sealing engagement with the inner surface of the neck 30. The flexible fingers 29 engage and grip the outer surface of the neck 30 and the inner surface of the skirt 14, the ribs 19 bite into the fingers 29. Thus the cylindrical member 13 is tightly held on the neck 30 and can not be easily removed therefrom.
In order to be able to dispense the contents of the bottle through the closure 10 an opening can be formed by pulling on the ring 26 and via the stem 27 rupturing or tearing the weakened annular region of the wall 27 to form an opening. If this opening is considered to be too large for use then a smaller diameter opening can be formed by cutting off the upper end of the nipple 25 instead of using the ring 26. The size of the opening produced by cutting the nipple can be varied by the location of the height of cut, i.e. a small opening will be provided by cutting the nipple 25 near to its tip and a larger opening will be provided by cutting the nipple 25 near its base.
The container is sealed by closing the lid 18 which then engages with the annular seal 16.
1. A resealable closure for the neck of a container, comprising an outer member having an annular body portion which can be placed on said neck and a pivotable lid portion which can be placed in sealing engagement with said outer member, and an inner sealing and retaining member having a stem portion which can enter and seal against the neck and a plurality of downwardly extending fingers which in use are clamped between the neck and the annular body portion, said stem portion being closed at its outer end by a rupturable or severable wall.
2. A resealable closure as claimed in claim 1, in which the annular body portion is provided on its inner side with at least one circumferential rib which bites into the fingers.
3. A resealable closure as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, in which the annular body is provided on its upper end with an annular sealing member which is engaged by the lid when in the closed position.
4. A resealable closure as claimed in any preceding claim, in which said rupturable wall is provided with a nipple which can be severed to provide an opening.
5. A resealable closure as claimed in claim 4, in which the nipple is surrounded by a ring connected to the rupturable wall by a stem, said ring being usable for pulling on the stem
