Abstract
A Parallel Bar walking aid incorporates a moveable seat (3), and is made of a frame of three sides with strengthening bars (2) at a lower level on each side. The two opposing strengthening bars provide accommodation for the seat, and are also useful to hang catheter bags. The four legs (4) are splayed for safety purposes and making easy access for stacking. The legs of the frame are adjustable for the bottom and fitted with castors which give controlled mobility. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Parallel-bar unit
1. The present invention id for the benefit and use of disabled people who are unable to use other aid designs for fear of falling, based upon the concept of a parallel-bar unit normally stationary in a fixed position, but in this invention made mobile on castors by pushing.
2. The invention proposes a mobile parallelbar unit on castors attached to four adjustable splayed legs which provides controlled movement by pushing without the use of a conventional braking system.
3. The invention is a composite mobile parailel-bar unit, incorporating a moveable seat independent of the main unit structure, and can be easily moved to a patient's bedside for immediate use, avoiding the necessity of the user having to be moved in a wheelchair to fixed stationary parallel-bar unit; its structure is of three sides with strengthening bars at a lower level, upon which the two opposing bars accommodate a moveable seat, also, to suspend appliances such as catheter bags.
4. In this invention the four splayed legs of the aid unit are angled at a distance which prevents the user from overtunning it, causing physical injury, also giving secure stability when the user performs physiotherapy exercises as required on a secured stationary parallel-bar unit, furthermore, the splayed legs enable the user to position the unit over part of a toilet seat without fear from falling, also, the splayed legs assist in stacking for storage.
5. In this invention, the user is NOT obliged to lift the unit off the ground which therefore gives added confidence to the user when proceeding forward or backwards, nor, being on castors of the no resistant non runaway type cannot runaway with the user, as is the danger with aid units on revolving castors or wheels needing some form of conventional braking system.
6. The invention is mainly for use in hospital wards, in physiotherapy departments, nursing homes for the aged and infirm, but can be used in a bungalow or house, though outside on pathways and roadways would be limited; an invention which may be formed from metal tubing or by other methods known to those skilled in the art.
The invention will now be further described by reference to the accompanying drawings:

1. A mobile parallel-bar unit on non resistant, non runaway castors attached to four adjustable splayed legs, preventing the unit being overturned by the user, and providing controlled movement by pushing without a conventional braking system; a composite unit with a moveable seat being independent of the unit structure; the unit being formed of metal tubing, or by other methods known to those skilled in the art; its structure being of three sides with strengthening bars at a lower level which accommodates the moveable seat and for suspending appliances for the user's comfort, such as Catheter bags, etc.; a mobile parallel-bar unit which can be moved to the user's bedside for immediate use, instead of the patient having to be moved in a wheelchair to a fixed stationary parallel-bar unit to undertake physiotherapy exercises in complete confidence of stability without fear from falling; a mobile parallel-bar unit for severely disabled people unable to use other conventional aids; an invention for use in hospital wards, nursing homes, houses and bungalows; but with limited use on pathways or roadways.
2. A mobile parallel-bar unit as claimed in
Claim 1. based on the concept of a parallelbar unit; normally stationary in fixed position, but in this invention mobile by pushing on castors of the non resistant, non runaway type, as is the danger with units on revolving castors or wheels needing some form of conventional braking system.
3. A mobile parallel-bar unit as in any one preceding claim in which the invention has four adjustable splayed leg supports, for safety and the purpose of stacking for storage.
4. A mobile parallel-bar unit as claimed in any one preceding claim incorporating a moveable seat independent of the unit structure, being of three sides with strengthening bars at a lower level which accommodates the moveable seat, and for suspending aid appliances for the user's comfort.
5. A mobile parrallel-bar unit as claimed in
