Abstract
A method of setting and/or changing tools 12 on a drilling or routing machine spindle 24 comprises positioning stop means such as a collar 14 with respect to the shank of the tool. The collar is positioned at a predetermined distance from the tip of the tool by press fitting the tool into the collar. Sensing means 16 determines the relative positions of the tool and the collar. The tool and collar assembly is supported for use on a storage pod 18 which is located below the work surface 20 and raised by a mechanism 22 for insertion into the machine spindle 24. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Method and apparatus for setting and changing tools
This invention relates to a method and apparatus for setting and/or changing tools on a machine for such operations as drilling and routing. More particularly, the invention relates to such method and apparatus for use in relation to drilling printed circuit boards and other related operations.
The invention is particularly concerned with the problems arising from the basic characteristics of machineryofthe kind employed in drilling printed circuit boards wherein drill speeds are much higher than in other machine tool operations and the drills and tools themselves are of particularly light duty characteristics. Drilling speeds of around 50,000 revolutions per minute with a drill diameter of 0.5 mil limetresaretypical forthe situations with which the invention is concerned. The problems arising from these characteristics are considerable and presently available equipment for dealing with them has several significant shortcomings.
Particular problems arise in relation to setting and changing tools on a printed circuit board drilling and routing machine.
Amongstthese problems is that of reliably setting the drilling or routing tool in relation to the drill spindle, controlling the depth of drilling and reducing the risk of damage to drilling and routing tools as a result of carelessness and/or normal wear and tear operations by the machine controller.
An objectofthe invention isto provide a method and apparatusforsetting and changing tools, with particular reference to tools for drilling and routing printed circuit boards and other light duty operations, offering improvements in relation to one or more of the matters discussed above, orgenerally.
According to the invention there is provided a method of setting and/or changing tools on a drilling or routing machine. The method comprises the step of positioning stop means such as a collar with re specttothe shank ofthe drilling or routing tool. The collar is positioned at a determined distance from the tip ofthe tool. This distance may be arranged to be always the same. The collar may be positioned in relation to the tool by press fitting the latter into the collar. Sensing means may be provided to determine the relative positions of the tool and the collar so that the tool is pressed into the collar up to a predetermined position.
The invention also provides apparatus for performing a method as defined above.
Another aspect of the invention provides a method and apparatus for setting and/or changing tools in a machinefordrilling or routing with respect to printed circuit boards and other light duty operations, comprising any novel feature or novel combination offeatures disclosed herein.
In an embodiment of the invention described below there is provided a new method of setting and changing tools on a printed circuit board drilling and routing machine. The setting and changing ofthe tools is carried out automatically by the machine.
Forsettingthetool,a collar is positioned on the shank of the tool such that when the tool is installed in the drilling spindle the distance from the end of the spindle to the tip of the tool is always the same.
Acollarisfedfrom a hoppersystem onto the machine. The required tool is collected from astor- age system and pressed into the collar. At the required position, determined by the detector, the collar is fixed onto the shank ofthetool. The tool, complete with collar, is then placed in a storage pod readyfor use.
Changing of the tools is as follows. The storage pod is located under the worktable ofthe machine in such a way that it does not impede the machine oper ator's access to the worktable in anyway.
When the machine's control system requests a tool change, an empty pod is positioned underthe spindle and then raised to receive the used tool.
The tool storage pod containing the newtool is next positioned underthe drill spindle and raised to allow the transfer of the new tool from the storage pod to the drill spindle.
In this way the setting of the tools is carried out with repetitive accuracy and tool storage pods pro tectthe tools until they are required for use.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows diagrammatically, apparatus for mounting a tool in relation to a collar; and
Figure2 shows a system of drilling tools mounted on associated collars ready for use in relation to a drill spindle.
As shown in the drawings a hopper feed system supplies drilling tools and collars for press fitting of the former into the latterto a predetermined position indicated by a position detector. The tool does not rotate during insertion and its position relative to the collarcan be determined with great accuracy. The collarfunctions in use as a stop to determine with precision the depth of drilling.
As shown in Figure 2 the drill bits with their assoc- iated collars are mounted on storage pods belowthe worktable surface and are thereby protected by the latter. A lifting mechanism raises the pods for insertion into a drill spindle. The latter moves across and down for coupling to the tools when required.
The entire operation of setting and changing tools is provided in an automated mannerwherebycon- trolled drilling to a precisely determined depth is possible in an automatic manner which has not hitherto been possible.
Reference is directed to the Applicant's model micromat MM 600 control system for machinetoolsfor complete details of a typical system to which the invention may be applied.
In the accompanying formal drawings the reference numerals listed below indicate those parts of the apparatus shown which were identified in the previously filed informal drawings bythetext now placed alongside those reference numerals, as fol- lows:
