Abstract

A continuous/piano hinge made from various sheet or moulded materials which incorporate a stepped or castellated knuckle which gives a positive stop at a pre-determined point during the rotation around the hinge pin. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Continous hinge with integral stop This invention relates to a continuous/piano hinge made from aluminium, steel, stainless steel or other suitable material, similar to the conventional continuous hinge but incorporating a stepped left and right hand knuckle, which meet at a pre-determined opening such as 92 deg, therefore eliminating the necessity to use a separate lid stay to stop the lid of the case or other container or fixture from falling backwards or being rotated past the pre-determined stop.
The invention features the use of a castellated or stepped knuckle arrangement (Fig. 1), incorporated into one leg of the hinge which positively engages with the corresponding castellated/stepped knuckle on the opposite leg of the hinge when the hinge has been rotated through a pre-determined angle. The pre-determined angle is determined by variable factors depending upon the application of the hinge, but could include the size and weight of the lid, and the final resting position of the lid when opened as determined by the user. The example as shown in Fig. 1 has a pre-determined opening stop at 92 deg.
Preferably the design as shown in Fig. 1 incorporates steps/castellations which occupy up to 50% of the total length of continuous hinge. This high percentage ensures that a positive stop is reached when the hinge is rotated to its pre-determined resting position.
1. A continuous or piano hinge which incorporates a positive hinge stop at a pre-determined position by the use of a stepped/ castellated knuckled joint.
2. A continuous hinge as claimed in Claim No. 1 which eliminates the need to use internal lid stays/stops.
3. A continuous hinge as claimed in Claim No. 1 and Claim No. 2 which eliminates the need to use external lid stays/stops.
4. A continuous hinge as claimed in Claim Nos. 1, 2 and 3 which can be pre-cut to any lengths without affecting the incorporated hinge stop.
5. A continuous hinge as described in Claim Nos. 1,2,3 and 4 which may be made from various materials of various thicknesses and with a variable pin diameter so that varying strengths may be maintained but without affecting the strength or function of the hinge stop.
