Stencils.-In a stencil for forming letters by means of a pen, pencil, or other marking implement, comprising a strip 10 of suitable material having openings 14 provided therein whereby the letters are formed by using one or two of the openings, means are provided to permit the necessary amount of movement of the stencil when two openings are used to form a letter. The openings 14 are cut between two longitudinal, margins 11, 12 on the strip 10 which is recessed longitudinally between the margins on the side adapted to rest on the surface to be marked to prevent ink blots when a pen is used. A button 16 engages a slot 15 in the strip 10 and is adapted to be pressed on the surface to be marked so that, when the longitudinal edge of the strip 10 rests against a straight edge, the strip can be given a limited movement relatively to the button 16. To mark a letter such as D, it is only necessary to use one opening 14, but to mark other letters, for example the letter B, it is necessary to utilize two openings 18, 19, the opening 18 being used first and the strip then moved relatively to the button 16 to bring the opening 19 into alignment with the part already marked to complete the letter.
