Abstract

A plug 12 can rotate in a housing 1 and has throughbore 13 which in one rotary position connects inlet and outlet ports 15, 16 and in another position connects ports 17, 18 to allow liquid filling the bore 13 to pass under gravity into sample bottle 22, pipe 25 connecting the bottle to vent pipe 24. The conduits 21, 25 may be coaxial in and just above bottle 22. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for sampling liquids This invention relates two apparatus for sampling liquids.
According to this invention liquid sampling apparatus comprises a housing having inlet and outlet ports, a plug rotatable in the housing and having athrough passage, which plug in afirst angular position establishes communication between the inlet and outlet ports via the through passage and in a second angular position establishes communication between delivery and vent ports in the housing via the through passage and cuts off communication between the inlet and outlet ports, a vent conduit leading from the vent port, a branch conduit from the vent conduit adapted to communicate with the interior of a delivery container, and a delivery conduit leading from the delivery port and adapted to communicate with the interior of said container.
An outlet part of the delivery conduit may be in the branch conduit.
The outlet partofthe delivery conduitand the branch conduit may be coaxial.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa schematic showing of sampling apparatus, and Figure 2 shows a modification.
Liquid sampling apparatus 10 com prises a housing 11 containing a plug 12 rotatable in the housing aboutan axis 13 and including adiametral through bore 14which can be brought, as shown, into alignmentwith opposed inletand outlet ports 15, 16 in the housing and, by rotation, into alignment with opposed ports 17, 18 in the housing. The port 15 communicates with a liquid inlet passage 19, the port 16 communicates with an outlet passage 20, the port 17 communicates with a conduit 21 leading to the interior of a sampling container 22through a closure stopper 23 and port 18 communicateswith overflow or vent pipe 24 which has a connection with a branch vent conduit 25 leading to the container 22.
In use, liquidto besampledflowsfromthe passage 19through the bore 14 into the passage 20 and, with the bore 14full,the plug 12 is rotated to bring the bore 14 into communication with the ports 17, 18 and the liquid in the bore 14passes under gravity as a sample into the container 22.
Use of the plug and housing prevents direct communication between the inlet 19andthe container 22. The inlet 19 and the outlet 20 may be connected to a liquid flow conduit 30 by passages 19a, 20a,the passage 19a incorporating a pump 31 for drawing liquid from the conduit30.
Figure 2 shows a modification in which the pipe 21 is inside the pipe 25 and the stopper 23 takes the form of closure unit engaging the rim ofthe bottle.
The apparatus is intended for obtaining samples of radioactive or other toxic liquids. The container 22 is closed and sealed by the stopper 23 and the extent of penetration of the vent 25 into the container 22 determines the amount of sample which can be introduced into the container. The level of sample in the container cannot rise above the end of the vent 25.
1. Liquid sampling apparatus comprising a housing having inlet and outlet ports, a plug rotatable in the housing and having a through passage, which plug in afirstangularposition establishes communication between the inlet and outlet ports via the through passage and in a second angular position establishes communication between delivery and vent ports in the housing via the through passage and cuts off communication between the inlet and outlet ports, a vent conduit leading from the vent port, a branch conduit from the vent conduit adapted to communicate with the interior of a delivery container, and a delivery conduit leading from the delivery port and adapted to communicate with the interior of said container.
2. Liquid sampling apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which an outlet part of the delivery conduit is in the branch conduit.
3. Liquid sampling apparatus as claimed in Claim 2, in which the outlet part of the delivery conduit and the branch conduit are coaxial.
4. Liquiid sampling apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2, of the accompanying drawings.
